My USA-built i7 is here! Western Digital HD, no yellow, no whine, no buzz! I didn't get off the hook completely though. Small smudge on the keyboard I can't seem to get off. No big deal. This is how an iMac should be!

HD noise

I'm thinking of buying an i7 iMac but I have no idea how to make sure I receive one with a non-noisy HD. Question is, just how noisy are we talking about?

couldn't be happier with my new imac

Couldn't. Be. Happier.

There might be just a tiny, slight, amount of yellow tinge at the bottom of my screen but i'm not going to think about it really. It's only noticeable if brightness is low and i'm really looking for it.

the CPU is incredibly efficient. on my non-uni C2D MBP, running iTunes and Chrome would set me back ~30% CPU. Doing the same thing on the i7 makes the CPU hover between 1 and 0%.

This machine is incredible.

Hey guys, I swapped my now previous iMac out for the new 27" Core i7 2.93GHz (see my sig. for all specs)...and I'm loving it! Glad to be part of the i7 club. ;)

Bye bye 2006 Mac Pro... Hello I7!... And thanks sis for making a decent offer on the old rig.

Just got the in store configuration. I'll add another 4 gigs soon.

The guy at the Apple store said they sold more of these this weekend than expected. After using it for a few hours, I can see why. Wow, what a great machine! Have the Seagate drive and a perfect screen.

Now for the next big decision. Do I sell my 15" MBP that I seldom use because of my iPad? But that's another forum...

Does this forum have a Buy/Sell/Trade section? I'm asking because I have 4x 4GB DDR3-1066 SODIMM (laptop+iMac) RAM chips, for a total of 16gb! All brand new sticks. It looks like I won't need them anymore. Where should I post this? Thank you. ;)

Also, what are some of the most common benchmark tools for OS X and the Mac. This baby flieeeeeees! :D Time to load some games. :) :apple:

Can I ask (request) for a usa built iMac 27 inch i7 8 gig ram without ssd if I live in quebec, canada? I haved return a shangai built i7 november built last year. This time I want a usa one.

My i7 with 8GB & 2TB came from the USA and I am in Canada also.

After playing The Sims 3 for about an hour (on max settings, of course) and dimming the screen all the way down, I could hear a faint electrical crackling from the left end of the top vent, but only if I had my ear within six inches of it. I'm 21 and have very acute hearing, and I still couldn't hear anything at a normal distance, so it's not a problem. If I didn't learn from this forum to check for it, I'd never know! My screen is exceptionally uniform and the Western Digital drive is much less intrusive than the Seagate I had in my returned i5 from last November.

I'm curious why my fans never seem to go above idle, even after playing The Sims for so long... I hope I'm not inviting heat damage.

No Apple computer is built in the US.

Faultless!

I picked my i7, 4gb 1tb from apple store today. This is replacing my 6 year old iMac G5 20".
Display is faultless.
Generally very quiet. Some low humming at times. Old iMac was blowing hot most of the time. I think hard drive is seagate.
Top is much warmer.
Package, quality of product nothing to complain.
Quite pleased.

Awesome! Nice to see that for the most part, we're finally getting iMac's that are consistently put together correctly. lol :)

@dwwarnecke11: Smudge on the keyboard? Just get the Bluetooth wireless keyboard replaced. You won't have a problem getting one from Apple! Good thing nothing's wrong with the body of the iMac. :D I still have 4 of the DDR3 memory chips if anyone wants a deal on RAM.

As for "Assembled in the U.S." I haven't noticed it on mine (where can I find that out?) but it makes sense. The late-2009 iMac's had all kinds of persistent issues, so while all parts still come from overseas, I guess Apple decided to have them put together here in the U.S. It's just a matter of money, as usual, so it looks like the cost of Apple having to replace one iMac after another is higher than paying Americans a higher wage to put them together, so as to hopefully face a lot fewer returns, and perhaps more importantly, no bad PR. lol

By the way, mine's getting pretty hot! I'm decoding a bunch of H.264 files and when I did the same on my previous Core i3-550 (3.2GHz) 27" iMac, it wasn't this hot, although it got fairly toasty at times, too.

Have any of you experienced this as well? And can someone please point me to where I might be able to download a reliable tool to monitor the CPU/GPU/heatsink (etc.) temperatures in real-time? It can be a widget, but I'd prefer being able to watch the temps while I'm working. (speaking of which, do any of you really use Dashboard?)

If you look on the iMac Box, on the side with the sticker with the UPC/Serial Number/Etc. At the bottom of the sticker it will tell you where your iMac was assembled.

For monitoring CPU and temp I use 'iStat menus' cool app with taskbar notifications, but its not free

Mine usually runs around 45C rarely goes over 50C and the fan is always quiet so I'm happy.

All 3 Late 2009 iMac 27"s i got (and returned) were Assembled in the US with sns prefixed with QP.

...and my brand new mid-2010 27" i7 is also a QP; assembled in the USA. It has the really progressive annoying yellow tint plus the faint grey band near the bottom.

Turns out Apple Stores in the UK stock the 2.93 i7 iMacs! :) Going to pick mine up on Sept 6th when I get paid, just in time to get my free iPod!

Yipee! :)

The only thing I'd love to be able to do is use my SSD as the system drive and even better would be if I could RAID two SSD's in the iMac. :D

OWC offers to put it together for you, along with another interesting option: eSATA! Is anyone here going for this?

Nah the eSata option looks ugly!

Im sure you can Raid 2 or 3 ssd inside your iMac! Using the sata off the optical drive aswell!

Just got my first 2010 27" i7 (after having had 3 2009 ones that all went back):

1 - Dead pixels -> None

2 - Gray-band issue -> Yeah, but very minimal, totally agreeable

3 - Yellow screen -> None

4 - Buzzing/electrical crackling/whining/dog whistling/high pitch noise -> yep, definetly :-( But it only is hearable with brightness almost to zero and in the process of going to standby.

5 - Noisy/(clicking?) hard drive -> The HD does not make any noise when in standby. It does have to a pretty high usage - HD-noise, but it all seems normal

6 - bended stand/fingerprints/scratches -> None

So if I pull everything together, i think i have a keeper... will watch it for one week though and finally decide then.
