Hello I got my new iMac last week and I realize that if I put the display brightness, when the computer its hot, let say playing games or editing movies, to something less than 70%, on the left top side I hear a buzzing noise.
I heard and read other people having this issue, but I also heard that it doesn't happens under windows which open the possibility of a software fix.

Can somebody confirm this?

Thx.

Gustavo

I have the buzz when my i7 is hot and the brightness is low, below 1/3 or so, but I literally have to put my ear up to the vent in a very quiet room to hear it. Some have a much louder buzz than this and for them, it is certainly a problem.

Yep, for me to hear I must put my ear next to the top left corner, and my apartment isn't that quiet, even when there is no outside noise or cars passing by I can't hear it at all.

So you are bearing with it then... I will try then.. :p..

Thx

Gustavo

after waiting for 15 days i finally got my Imac i7.. so far its quiet and no yellow tint. Has the WD hd.

Now im just getting used to it coming from a pc there are sure some challenges like always holding the control key for the right click :)

Thanks !

You need to enable right clcik on your magic mouse as the first thing you do! holding the CMD key must be a nightmare!

I can report after having my i7 for 4 days I have not looked for any screen errors and I have noticed nothing wrong! I do however have a grumbley hard drive, but I can get over than! I love the real estate of the screen!!

I have had my new 27' i7 Imac for close to a week now. First thing to do is enable right click in your mouse settings... But I also downloaded a very useful freeware app called bettertouchtool...it allows you to set a bunch of gestures on your magic mouse to different tasks on your Mac (think two finger swipe letft to go back in safari.. Or one finger up and down to scroll) ... Truly amazing app!!! And free..

ordered it

i had planned on waiting awhile longer for the i7... but really how could i?

ordered it last night, got 2 day shipping but it's still not shipped mid-day the day after. i think i'm going to get hosed on the shipping time though with labor day weekend coming up. plus, i've read about others who've been screwed by shipping times too.

One of the first things I did when I recently switched over to the Mac was to go into the System Preferences and add the Secondary mouse click. ;) I never even knew about the ctrl key. :D

If you decide to get a Magic Trackpad, which I can only enthusiastically suggest that you do, the two-finder tap is your right click.

Get your money back that you paid for shipping. Escalate to a supervisor, if necessary.

Those too gestures are default in Snow Leopard! :p

I use BTT for 2 finger down for expose! and Swipe left and right to change tabs!

My new machine arrived!

My i7 iMac arrived yesterday. It's fantastic! I know others have had problems with them, but so far there isn't a thing wrong with the one I got. Although I think I might need to get a new desk to put it on.

Here's a pic of my setup. I've had my new i7 for 9 days now. Besides the speck of dust trapped in the LCD panel, it's a dream!

Like your desk. Where did you buy it? ;)

imac i7 2.93 runs hot!

anyone notice how hot this system gets?

I measured 115F on the screen, like working in front of an oven!

The top of the frame measures ~124F.

This system will cook itself over time!

i can make it hot really fast ~10 min by ripping with handbreak (big cpu hog). cpu measures >150F
so does the power supply. only the cpu fan speeds up over 2k rpm, the others stay around 1500.

it takes about 30 min if i'm watching video via slingbox or a dvd.

I took the unit back to the store 2 times, once overnight for testing. Final result was this system runs hot as designed, very hot! Problem is it makes anyone sitting in front of it for a couple of hours hot, it also heats the room up for free! (well for $2k you get a computer and a room heater for free).

I would bet that after 6 months to a year of extream hot (>120) to cold (~75) cycles that this system will have all sorts of problems.
Components like disks and chips just are capable of handling those type of extreams. Apple also needs to think about the human
factor, its just not comfortable sitting in front of a screen that is >110F.

ambient temp is ~75

After an hour the system raises the room temp by ~5 degrees. As i mentioned its like sitting in front of an over that is set at 110F, after awhile this gets very uncomfortable.

According to istats the optical & hard drive fans never go above 1500rpm, the cpu fan will go up to ~2k when the system is loaded. If more air moved through the frame this heating issue would not exist.

What is your CPU doing? I cannot imagine that your display is that hot. Something is wrong. I would say that with no load on my system the display is maybe 5-10 degrees above ambient, which is about 70 degrees. The top feels close to 85-90F. When I put a load on it, the temps go up, but not by much.

According to istat, i barely have internal temps at 120F (GPU, Power Supply etc...)

What are your internal temps? What is the ambient temp?

Get the free widget called iStat Pro and let us know what that app reports as far as your temps.

Most CPU's and GPU's can withstand temps over 200F, but that should only happen when you're maxing out your capacity by playing a game, for example. How hot does it get in the room where you use your iMac? That can also play a significant role.

new iMac i7 arrived

My 1st Mac arrived and I couldn't happier. I've read the posts and mine does not suffer from yellowish color or loud buzzing.

I order the 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 with 4 GB RAM and 2 TB HDD on Aug 23rd from Toronto and it was delivered (from USA) on Aug 31st (just as FedEx predicted). Very impressive.

The HDD is so silent even during some heavy Lightroom crunching and preview rendering.

I'm very pleased with it and hope to upgrade to an additional 8GB from OWC sometime in the future. I'm in no rush as Lightroom, PS and all other CS5 apps just fly.

I hope everyone else gets a good quality iMac as I did. Best of luck.
I guess what they say is true, once you go Mac, you don't go back :)

ps. love the forum, being new to Macs - its very useful and resourceful.

I have the i7 and the first thing I did was upgrade to 12GB of ram. (2) 4GB sticks from OCZ in the first two SODIMM slots.

I've opened:

All programs in Adobe CS5
Final Cut Pro
Pro Tools
MAMP
Open Office
iTunes
all iLife programs

Started using them... and... I still have 8GB free! So surprising. I wonder why in the world I thought I needed 12GB total. I guess it's when I finally get around to getting Parallels and IE6, IE7, and IE8 for web dev.

Speaking of which, that's another post! Gonna need some help getting those set up (hopefully with free, open source stuff).

I love my iMac

After 35 years of DOS and Windows on PCs I recently took the plunge to OsX and iMac.

I have a BTO 27" iMac i7 2.8 with a 2TB Hitachi HDD and 8 GB memory.
Build 2010 week 19 in the Czech Republic (serial VMxxxxxx).
Also a magic mouse & magic trackpad. For backup WD studio 2 TB.
Enough to play with :)

No yellow screen, no noises or buzzing, no dust behind the screen. Just a p-e-r-f-e-c-t machine!

And wow, i had to took that step years ago.

I'm lurking on this forum for a few weeks now. And learned a lot.

Greetz from the Dutch Mountains.

2.8  is it an 09 imac?! What you order?

2.8 is it an 09 imac?! What you order?[/QUOTE]

Went to the local mac-shop and ordered "the newest and fastest iMac with the biggest screen". Bought it in week 21.

I'm a newbie, it's my first.
So I wanted the-best-of-all that will serve me a few years. And it does ....
Don't know if it is a 2009 or 2010 model.

Move your pointer to the top left of your screen and click on the :apple: . Then select "About this Mac" from the drop-down menu and tell us what it says. It should say either 2.93GHz Intel Core i7 or 2.8GHz Intel Core i7. :)

Either way, you got the latest and the greatest because there is not much difference between the late '09 and the mid-2010 iMac's. So welcome! ;)

Alright, so you have the late '09 model. That's the only way to distinguish a late '09 from a 2010 model. With the exception of the graphics chip (another small difference that's not noticeable, but only measurable) your system bests every other 2010 iMac. ;)

Thank you very much for the support.

I had to make the switch to iMac 20 years ago.....

I have a mid 2010 iMac with a 2TB Hitachi.

But my temps are pretty high for this harddisk. Istatpro says:
Is this normal??!! What are your Temps en fan-speeds?

Temps under browsing and little torrent downloads:

Fan-speeds:
OPTICAL DRIVE: 1140 rpm
HDD: Always 1100 or above. Now it is: 1548
CPU: 1238

Temperatures:
AMBIENT: 27C 81F
OPTICAL DRIVE: 52C 126F
POWERSUPPLY: 66C 151F
MEMCONTROLLER: 56C 130F
GPUDIODE: 66C 148F
GPU HEATSINK: 61C 144F
HDD: 59C 139F
CPU: 53C 128F

I have also a buzzing/short-circuit sound if i dim the screen, this is only if the cpu temp is above 48c 120F.

If i dim the screen, first i hear i high pitch tone, dim i further i hear the buzzing/short-circuit sound.

Ps, sorry for bad english, im a beginner.
