I think they would get more sales with a top-end 24" than a 28"

If they had a corei7 imac in 24" i would definitely go for that ... but 28" is a large piece of desk real-estate.

I have to agree, 28" for me would be way to large and doubtful this is going to happen (but what do I know?) The reason I cannot imagine a 28" display is just think how far back you would you need to sit from the display to

A: Avoid eye strain and subsequent headache
B: Appreciate the screens definition

I'm going to hold out for a 24" iMac with Intels Core i7 processor - hopefully come the third quarter of 2009?

A 28" iMac at this time is about as likely as an 8-core Mac Mini with space for 4 hard drives and on-board hardware RAID.

I know 28" is enormous in size it will be very expensive. It will use the new Corei7 which will be nice. But I do not think it will be worth the money in getting since in the future the lower end iMacs will most likely use the corei7's some day.

The 28" iMac (if there is gonna be one), is NOT going to use the Core i7 processor. For a start, iMacs use laptop components and there isn't a laptop version of the Core i7 available yet.

iMacs use laptop components.....

Not actually a hard and fast rule, previous iMacs have used desktop components HOWEVER the wattage of the current desktop incarnations of the Intel Core i7 processors would suggest they would run tad hot for the current range of iMacs. I suppose, theoretically, if there were a 28" iMac (which I dont believe there will be) the increase in the size of the case could allow for more efficient/aggresive coooling methods to compensate for a hotter running processor.

I know i'm pulling into Rumor Avenue but wasn't there a post a few weeks ago about Apple using a new cooling technique for its computers...

If this was something like a sealed water cooling technique, wouldn't that make it do-able for an iMac since it would be quieter than the higher capacity fans required

Hey im back everyone officially 1 day away until the keynote. I cannot wait!!! get your debit/credit cards ready!!!

I agree the 28" imac will have an amazing screen!!! I am glad that I waited this long I think i am going for only the 24".

Mac Mini - Spec bump and redesign
17" MacBook Pro - Unibody
iMac - Spec update
iPod touch - 64GB and 2.3. May end up happening in February.
iPhone - 32GB and 2.3. May end up happening in February.
Snow Leopard - Demo and release date
Mac Pro - Possible processor upgrade
"One more thing -" Maybe a touch Mac, iPhone nano (hope not), or something completely unexpected.

I do not think there will be a one more thing. Why do I say this because only Steve Jobs himself says the "one more thing".

There will be nvidia 9400m (lower) and 9600 (higher) graphics in them. The 28" will have a corei7 processor and not sure which kind of graphics yet to be used. I am pretty confident 2GB of ram standard with maybe 3GB or 4GB of ram standard in the higher end models.

Sadly, you've been misinformed. iMacs use dedicated graphics, the 9400M is not dedicated.

I know what I'm about to ask is most likely a stupid question in one way or another but if apple were to put quad cores in their iMacs would this be for all models or only the highest of high end?

Use. Not necessarily "will use."

Thermal restrictions aside, the 65 W desktop quad-cores are cheap enough to go in most if not all iMacs (not sure, better check closely). But thermals as well as product placement may mean that only the 24" models get the quad-core.

So:
  • 20" iMac: Dual-core, 9400M/9600M
  • 24" iMac: Quad-core, 9600M/9800M
  • 28" iMac: Quad-core 8-thread, 9800M (better)
  • Mac Pro: 8-core 16-thread, GT200
Not a bad progression. And since the 28" iMac would be for pros, it makes sense to release it with the Mac Pro. Now where's the 20" quad-core MacBook Pro?! :D:p

There are no Gainestown chips in production yet!
And won't be for a little while, which makes the rumored February release unlikely.

I really hope you're wrong about it being in the 24 inch model and up having it. I jsut don't think the 400 dollar price gap (1800 canadian plus 13% tax) for it is worth it... If the second 20 inch model had it no words in this world would explain how ecstatic I would be. Someone tell me I could be right :(

I really hope the prices are going to be pretty reasonable for these new models.

I really don't think the 28" is a possibility. The only 28" monitors I've seen have been 1920 x 1200 resolution which is the same as the current 23" ACDs and 24" ACDs/iMacs. Therefore, I don't see Apple using a 28" screen with the same resolution as they will be terrible to use.

I know what I'm about to ask is most likely a stupid question in one way or another but if apple were to put quad cores in their iMacs would this be for all models or only the highest of high end?

Most likely only the top end.
Maybe the two top ends.

To what?

Of all the people to say something like this... I could have sworn you'd be following my posts more closely. :p

I was thinking of you when I types that, I just forgot how to spell Nehalem.
And no I did no know the chips were not in production yet.

I agree with this (of course most hesitant on the 28"). Now, I have a question. The 8800gs in the current BTO high end card, is it really any worse than the 9800m??

Nope, they're not. :(

Our only hope is that that spy shot wasn't Al Gore, but rather Paul Otellini coming on stage and saying, "We have something, to borrow a phrase, insanely great for you today... We've put Gainestown into production early, in secret. The Nehalem Mac Pro is available... today!"

Going by the details given when the Macbook Pros were released, the new line of nVidia chips do seem alot better than the previous ones.

You're getting my hopes up now Tallest Skill!!! However, it was probably more likely Paul Otellini describing how they've got the quad core cpu's in the iMacs :(

these aren't your predictions.

"...Just kidding, that's all true but I've delayed them for fun. Screw you guys!"
