Maybe Apple wants to wait until the Surface Pro 5 is announced which is also rumored to be announced in spring. Maybe Microsoft is also waiting for the iPP to be announced. The last one to announce can directly attack the features of the other product and create better PR/Marketing. Just some thoughts..

You might be right, but I think it's stupid that these products are even compared.

The Surface is a laptop that can act as a tablet if needed.

The iPad is a tablet that can act as laptop if needed.

They have nothing in common besides their form factor and the fact that they both have a digitizer.

That's debatable. I agree with your Surface analysis, but nothing convinced me an iPad can be used as a laptop and I own an iPad. I love it as it is a damm awesome tablet, but I dont fall for Apple marketing. iPad is iPad, laptop is a laptop.

It would be incorrect not to compare them.

They are both computers, claiming to replace your laptop, in a similar form factor, and are competing for your money.

I mean, how can you confirm it if he's been all over the place in the past? You're really going to get people overly excited in this thread with that kind of talk..

I didn't start the thread. He said he expects a Spring event and that invites should go out yesterday. He was wrong.

Oh, how I so wish. My iPad 3 is getting more sluggish by the hour. If it wasn't for the expectation of a better camera and a 10.5 I would jump for a 9.7pro which I know I would be happy with but I can't afford to keep updating being an olde bloke :( and retired. :D

I was hoping the same. It's strange because I had the 9.7 Pro and sold it. Now I am getting the itch again. If Apple comes out with a bezel-less 10.5, I'd be in on it.

I´d attach to the "minor" updates (the ones in March) first for an early April event theory, supported by Michael Gartenberg.

"Minor updates like today’s usually happen when there’s a launch event that’s packed with too much new stuff. Watch out for those invites."

Dude...you absolutely SHOULD NOT KEEP THAT DEVICE!!!
Seriously return it for your own good. Don't settle for 1.5 year old tech
Dammit Apple, I have til Friday to return this 9.7 Pro to Verizon, now give us the invites!
return it serious don't settle for 1.5 year old tech especially with the new processor it's going to blow the A9X out of the Water

I can understand and I would also differentiate the two products like you do. But a lot of consumers and even the companies see them as rivals I guess.

The iPad 2017 all but ensures the next iPad pro iteration will be major. Apple undercut itself by pricing it so low. How big is the market for a $600+ iPad that's not a major step up from the $329 iPad? Not very big I would think. I bet Apple hold off on the next update until all the right pieces are lined up for something big. Including changing the form factor, possible OLED screen, major processor upgrade, etc...

Are we that sure a new one is coming within weeks?

I don't think that the 2017 iPad "ensures" any of that.

Apple released the iPhone SE and it didn't impede sales on the iPhone 7. Look at the flack people are giving the 2017 iPad. Sure, people here are not necessarily typical consumers but they INTERACT with typical consumers. And they're telling them that the 2017 iPad is "old" technology and to "go Pro".

I'm a big fan of the 2017 iPad, but if you can't see that there are significant differences between the iPad SE and Pro (worthy of the price difference) then I don't know what to say.

Geez, is this really happening? I interact with a lot of typical consumers and am happy to have an easy go to iPad option to recommend to any of them.

Of course it's happening. Those who are viewed as "experts" by their friends and acquaintances feel the burden of responsibility (or want to maintain that reputation) so they make recommendations that will have the least possibility of disappointing.

Look how many here are "waiting" (and have waited 4 - 6 months or more) for the next gen iPad. THAT decision speaks to their less tech savvy friends.

"Jim knows his stuff, so if HE is waiting I probably should too."

That makes sense if the less-tech savvy friend is in the market for a Pro model, for whatever reason.

I could say that I'm viewed as an 'expert' by many family members / friends / colleagues. But it doesn't mean they're just going to buy what I buy. They usually ask advice and what would be best to purchase for their use or for a certain price.

What parts does the new iPad share with the old iPad?

Thought so.

Hey, Captain Douche, next time why don't you put my full quote? Trying to make me look stupid by taking part of my quote out of context and replying.
"The iPad is basically an iPad Air 1 with updated specs." Guess what, it has the same form factor as the Air 1 and I said it has updated specs.
