So no real computer hardware updates till intel? Thats a brilliant strategy by Apple (lets move processor and not give the public anything new in the meantime and see how sales plummet)

Yeah, then they can stop selling notebooks with the argument that nobody buys their wonderful products anyway. *nirg*

Personally after my old iPod died when it took a 1 foot fall onto a carpet, I won't be buying any more iPod's until they have a decent shock protection system built in (a bit like the new Sony player). It won't be fool proof I know, but another line of defense for my hundreds of dollars investment would be nice...

Oh and a changeable battery (ala the sony as well)...

I dont ask for much...

I think your experience was probably the exception rather than the rule. I've dropped my iPod from tabletop level multiple times  with no adverse effects (as of yet!).

..and I remember all the modest speculation of ipods being wifi, bluetooth, video, big HD sizes, lower prices but Apple once again sells us the idea again.... 'its new but the same'
Well, those speculations is just silly...

Video is just a gimmick and watching video on a 2" screen will never be more than a novelty that's fun about half a time, and Steve Jobs knows it...

WiFi and Bluetooth would also be equally silly because the battery would drain so fast while playing over AirTunes/syncing with iTunes that you'd have to be permanently connected to the charger anyway...

But, bigger HD, now you're on to something. But I haven't read anything about 80 or 100 GB 1.8" HDs, have you?

Boring... enough with iPods already, it's starting to get pretty annoying... What about the rest of what Apple is? Hello Macintosh? Or should we say bye bye?

maybe I'm blind but on the belgian & us store, there is no new sign next to the iBooks...

and they do strange things with the iPods...

iPod 20/40GB -> 20GB only
iPod Photo 40/60GB (not sure if there was a 20GB) -> 30/60GB

and now 'photo' has dissapeared and iPod 20/60GB... hmmz... were the iPod photo's not selling well and had they an overstock of all those components... thus changeing to one line up all photo but lose the name...???
I think ditching the 40GB iPod was the first attempt to make people buy a Photo instead...
I think they should have kept the 40 GB for $349. That way, they would still have the $50 increments, and there wouldn't be such a gap between the 20 GB and the 60 GB.

Very Disappointing...

My iPod was stolen a few months back, but rather than replace it immediately, I figured I'd just wait for the 5G's. My point is, I'm actually in the market for a new iPod. Even though I need an iPod, I'm still disappointed in these updates. The only change really is that they dropped the 30gig ipod photo down to a 20gig and threw out the regular ipod...thats it.

They kind of half-arsed it. If you look at the specs, the 20gig is now thicker (same depth as the 30gig), yet the U2 iPod is as thin as it was before the update. My question is, if they can keep the U2 iPod at the same depth with a colour screen, why can't they do the same with the 20 gig iPod. It almost looks like they're just opened up the older 30 gig photos, replaced the drive with a 20 gig, closed it back up and marketed it as a 'new' 20 gig ipod. Anyone know why is the U2 iPod thinner than the 20 gig???

Well, it's good news for me, anyway. My wife got me a 60GB iPod on 6/18, and a quick call to my Apple store confirmed that I can take the receipt in today and get $50 back (or just put it towards another purchase ;) ).

Sucks that there was no iBook update, though.

Maybe the exciting PowerPC product that is still "in the pipeline" is a PPC powered Video iPod, coming on 7/7

A mutiny if Apple doesnt release something good.

Based on the update and the rebate they currently have I can guess with some degree of certainty that there is no new Mac products coming until October.

Grrrr.......

Hmm, I hadn't noticed that before. I think you may have hit the nail on the head. The color screen obvoiusly wouldn't contribute to the depth of the unit any more than the grayscale screen does. Oh well, I like my 3G iPod better than the 4G design anyway.

Now when you qualify for a EDU. disconunt they changed the agreement

rchase the following quantities of product per academic school year:

1. Desktop: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
2. Mac mini: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
3. Laptop: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
4. Display: A maximum of two (2) may be purchased per academic year
5. Software: A maximum of two (2) per software title may be purchased per?cademic year
6. iPod: One (1) per iPod family (iPod, iPod mini, iPod Shuffle 1GB, iPod Photo) may be purchased per academic year (Note: there is no quantity limitation on iPod Shuffle 512MB)
7. iSight: One (1) may be purchased per academic year

Also both my school and my moms school are not eligable for the disscount anymore??? Hopefully they will change that.

this is great deal for me...i get my iMac G5 17", And get a 60 gig iPod color for hardly any money. Heres why...i will sell my iPod 10gig on ebay for 150 or more: 150+179=329....ony 40 dollars for an iPod 60 gig!!! :D

These are still 4th Gen right? No real change but price and availability?

Color, as the other poster noted, and these "regular" color iPods replace the iPod Photo as well.

As for size comparison:
The still-for-sale U2 iPod measures: 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.57" and weighs 5.9 ounces - NOTE: now includes a color screen.
The new color 20 GB: 4.1 x 2.4 x0.63" and weighs 5.9 ounces
The new color 60 GB: 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.75 (same size as the iPod Photo) and weighs 6.4 ounces (same weight as iPod Photo).

There may be new features, but from a hardware standpoint it looks like the new iPod color 60 GB is the same unit as the iPod photo with a 60 GB HD.

EDIT: 11:20 PM ET: Apple has updated the specs for the U2 thickness and it is now listed as THE SAME as the white color 20 GB.

I'm planning on buying an iBook in July or August.

I may just take them up on the rebate and get a Mini, probably to give away as a gift.

No iPod for me

The gap between the 20 and 60 is hopefully temporary - there isn't an iPod in the lineup I'd actually buy anymore! My 15 is full, so there's no point in getting a 20; and I won't fill 60 before it's obsolete. 30/40gig would be perfect. Maybe they're waiting on the single-platter 40gig drive.

Still, I have to wonder what the iPod Business Unit have been up to since they were announced in March 04. In 15 months they've added a colour screen to the iPod and produced the Shuffle? There has to be something else in the works... apart from the phone.

i don't know what apple was thinking w/ the new ipods, they need like a 40GB so there's not such a huge difference between the 20 and 60GB ones
the ipod shuffle price cut was nice and now it costs only an extra 20 bucks with the educational discount to get the 1GB one, should have cut the 512MB ipod shuffle too

I'm looking myself, but don't know if I can get an iBook on pure principles. My daughter would *love* a pink mini but I really would like to see an update....

I agree with you. I actually liked the 3G design better too. That's why I wasn't in a rush to replace my stolen 3G with a 4G. If I still had it, I'd wait for a better update before replacing it. Unfortunately my 3G is gone, so I've got to decide on something now.

You can buy my 3G 20gig iPod from me! That way I can get a mini. :D

why the bitchin'?

moan moan moan moan moan....

Has everyone forgotten that there's an press conference next week? So now we know it's pretty much NOT going to be ipods as they've done them today maybe it'll be ibooks, or maybe it'll be G5 powerbooks :D or maybe just maybe it'll be an interactive/wifi/bluetooth/G5/Intel/widescreen/podcasting/colour/radio enabled Steve Jobs robot with longer lasting removable battery so you can just shout at him everytime you don't get what you want and he won't listen because he'll have gapless playback and just talk over you.

PHEW!

ok so it's going to be the phone.....

OOH! I'll buy one of those in an instant! :D

The bitchin' is because we pretty much assume it'll be the phone. And we're bitchin' because some of us would actually like a new computer.
