Is 'iPod Touch' iPhone without phone?

I bought iPhone and use it in Japan. Safari and Mail works very well because they can display Japanese letters.

If 'iPod Touch' were iPhone without phone, Safari and Mail must accept 'Japanese letter'. Japanese letter will be displayed but I think that it will take long time to be implemented for the function of inputting Japanese letter.

I think 'iPod touch' will implement the easy iTunes not Safari and Mail.

Whilst I quite like this, I'm 100% convinced that it's just a photoshopped Nano... And, as a graphic designer, here are a couple of reasons why:

1. The click wheel isn't a perfect circle: there's been a thumb or a finger there in the past, that's been "photoshopped out" fairly badly (as they've neglected to re-build it properly):

2. You can clearly see the size and shape of the existing nano (and even where the thumb and finger were in the original pic) in the background if you up the brightness & contrast:

02nm9.jpg

so, all they've done is to shrink the existing nano in size, and do a pretty poor job on covering their tracks...

idk if anyone has pointed this out yet, but look at the "shadow" behind the nano and the hand, it's like someone blotted out something that was there, to edit in the fake nano\hand

Naa, I think the hand is real, but the nano as pictured is a fake nevertheless.

They simply took a photo of somebody holding a current nano, edited away the upper half (fits with the black shadow in the background) and pasted in the coverflow (explains the difference in sharpness between the display and the surrounding surfaces).

Nice job, but too good to be true. I think this is not the model we will see on Wednesday.

I really like this design, and real or not, I hope this is what the new nano looks like. I would definitely buy one.
Agrreed - although it wouldn't look good in black...

You mean the left picture? They are exactly the same as the Apple headphones from the 3G, 4G and mini era. The ones in the right picture are the current ones.
ok - my bad but why are they differtent in both pics?

For all the fake sayers.... Explain your reasons for suggesting so?
  1. The hand looks slightly dodgy
  2. the background behind the hand and the ipod is very different from the rest of the background and has straight edges
  3. click wheel is very small (see Chundles post)

Could this be the wide screen iPod?

Why did arn edit this? - the pic looks ok but it is 2 small to tell - the iPod looks ok but again a virtual clickwheel? not so sure

The new fat ipod will be the new NANO... not the new video ipod like some are suggesting.

Why will it replace the nano? Because Apple wants to make money. And they can't make money from keeping a product around that everyone already owns.

Here's a few points...

1) Nano has been the best selling ipod. That means there are millions of people who own them. What does that mean to Apple? It means its time to make those millions of people feel like they have an outdated product.

2) Video is the new music. Expect Apple to make some pretty big strides in the video category before christmas. Whether that means video rentals or just a ton more content... Apple isn't going to release the new full screen ipod (along with apple tv) and then not cash in on the enormous potential of online video. With the news that other companies (like nbc) are trying to launch online video portals, you better believe that Apple will be nipping it in the bud and making itunes THE portal for online video. That being said... an all "video ready" ipod lineup is essential for their success in making it happen.

3) It isn't going to be that ugly. No one here has actually seen it yet so it's dumb to pretend that we know what it will be like. Will it be super thin? Will it feel better in your hand? Will it be shiney and pretty? We wont know the answers until Wednesday. Until then, it's safe to assume that Apple knows what they are doing and this will be an obvious improvement over the Nano.

4) It seems like the number one reason people have been citing for not liking the new form factor is, "how will people jog with it?" That seems like a pretty silly concern to me, but I'm sure Apple has an answer. Here's a couple questions that should be asked: How did people jog before the nano? and, How do people who own the current 5G video ipod jog? People are going to continue jogging with their ipods even if the form factor changes. AND let's not forget that Apple offers an iPod thats perfect for jogging... and it even has a CLIP to hold it in place! Will we eventually see the ipod shuffle drop the "shuffle" and gain a pretty little screen? Probably.

Taking into account those point, here are my predictions on what will be available after Weds.:

iPod Shuffle:
1 GB - $59
2 GB - $89

iPod Nano:(Maybe a name change?)
Video enabled fatpod
4 GB - $150
8 GB - $199
16 GB - $250

iPod:
multi-touch full screen w/ wireless syncing
50 GB - $299
120 GB - $399

This is a nano - i recon the fatpod is a flash based video iPod - they are combining the nano and the mini in this one - width and slimness, the fatPod is completely differnet - a replacemrnt 4 iPod w/video but makes it slimmer... Touch is whole new line.
People like the nano and this one looks good, they will get a lot of switchers, and a Touch iPod will rake them in too. Apple is onto a winner with the nano - people regard it as sexy, slim and cool, most of my friends don't want a video iPod... the touch would change this, but some still wouldn't be able to afford it, this nano makes perfect sense for that catagory.

Buying...

I personally think that the hand looks completely real... Although it looks neat (the iPod), I think I would be set buying the touch if that comes out. But a question to all...

Once Steve Jobs announces the new iPod editions, do you think that they would go on sale straight away?

Simply because I want to buy one on my 18th birthday (6th September)...

I stood on my last iPod and the screen cracked in and the screen messed up :(

Nice predictions.

As for the iPod, I would think 60/80 GB and maybe even 160GB - likely at higher price point got 160.

Wireless I expect will also allow more than synching.

If it's true that the interface is changing so significantly, Creative will be royally screwed by Apple due to the reported terms of their UI lawsuit settlement. Remember that, the almost inexplicable outcome of that patent lawsuit? Creative had that patent on the column/menu interface for the iPod so they sued Apple. Apple paid up and licensed it from them but forced them to agree to license it exclusively to Apple. Wasn't there something in there about how Creative couldn't license the UI to anyone else for 5 years without paying Apple back some of their settlement?

If Apple completely changes the iPod UI and stops licensing Creative's, that agreement is going to leave Creative up the creek, it seems. No more licensing fees from Apple and they will have to pay back money to Apple should they try to license it to someone else.

:) That sounds like Steve.

Nice work! - you've turned me from 98% to 100% convinced
Cheers

I don't understand why some people say this Nano is Fat - it's almost the same as the current Nano, except it's got the bottom 1/4 chopped off. It anything, it's slimmer than the current one.

hm...would have to agree on this one. but it looks better than the earlier mock-ups. but as you say the ergonomics will be quite bad no? and considering its size the screen will not be much bigger?

I don't think the screen size is such as issue. The fake looks to have a 1.5 - 2" screen and that's fine for most things, especially if you give it a decent resolution which if the fake was real, I'm sure Apple would do.

The problem as I said is that this iPod design would be too short to give your hand sufficient purchase to operate the click wheel.

Sorry, looks too small for me. From reading this it's obviously a fake. It does look better than the first one I saw last week which looked like something apple would laugh at. I hope so or it will bomb, horrible beyond all horribleness.....

I want the ipod touch anyway though.

If that is really how the Nano will look, then there is not going to be ANY issues from anyone. Seems like everyone is always ready to string Apple up from the gallows when a "leaked" photo appears without any real solid specs to back it up. I have to admit I was leery when I saw the first pics of the Nano, but after seeing ow it might fit in your hands, I'm all for it.

Those nanos don't look bad when you put the size into perspective.

But, Oh, I'm so waiting / hoping for the iPod touch screen... sooo nice!

Oh well, looks farily nice. I wouldn't mind if this wasn't a mock-up after all. Anyway, the pics seem to show that they aren't the actual new iPod nano, even if it would come out as similar. Besides the first photo being quite strange, the other gives itself away, in my opinion. If you look at the edges of the display in the second picture, it seems as though the screen would be more to the left that to the right. It looks like that to me, 'cause the left edge of the screen seems to go a bit over the point where the aluminium(?) starts to bend, whereas the right side seems to be flat.

There are fake product images people spend a lot of time on and then there's these kind of horrible edits. He clearly just took a photo of current Nano in his hand, made it shorter and changed the screen. That could actually have resulted in a decent or even a good fake picture, but why on earth didn't pay any attention to the background. Either his display is so bad that he actually thought that the background looks unified or he wanted everybody to know that this is fake.

In my opinion, the current generation nano based design looks much better than the one that, for example, Gizmondo posted. Mainly because of the absence of rounded corners.

lol all the talk of "fake hands" fake how? prosthetic? 3D rendered? Its a real hand, its just got some bad blur on it from when the 'artist' modified the nano and switched the background..

I'd quite like a stubby little nano like that though. :)

Let's hope this ain't the real deal. It's just too small. I would loose this in a heartbeat. Also watching video on such small screen is just ridiculous. The current iPod screen is already too small, if you ask me.

Let them just release a multitouch iPod 100GB and I will run to the store when it's cheaper then a iPhone.

Myself I am waiting for Motorola to release there awesome new multitouch mobile phone. The rumour is it will be 3.5G phone with WiMax support and even possible Wireless USB. Only the latter has too much complications in countries around the world. But indeed it will blow away people :)

I believe now! This one thread quashed any thoughts about a stubby nano being ugly, I actually think that's quite nice now. And the iPod Touch? Awesome. However I think the Touch's advert is fake. I can imagine a similar design but with the middle button saying the iPod standard 'menu', rather than it being a little square.

iPod touch = iPhone - Phone ??

that doesn't make sense at all

iPhone touch = iPhone - Phone - Camera - Wi-Fi

it does make more snese now to me :D except for the price.
they're gonna be flash base or hard drive ?

Most people will end up being happy with the new nano iPod because of it's low expectations and will end up being unhappy with the new touch iPod because of it's high expectations :).
