It gets people talking and stuff. It's clearly working for them.

It doesn't really matter how much people talk.
Mac Pro is for Prosumers who can't stand wasting time for Windows' problems.
I've tried 1 year with Windows swapping my old MP2008 for new PC. And yes PC was more powerful. And yes it ran ok without crashing. But it had still horrible Windows. What made me work slower and less comfortable. Eventually ended up with rMBP E2013 hooked up to external monitor while waiting for nMP.

So people like me who are in need of pro hardware and can't stand Windows gonna buy MP no matter how much they delay it or how much people talk for it or against it. For us those machines are workhorses of choice.

But yes this waiting is annoying. Especially when you want to buy it in current fiscal year.

The Mac Pro is also my work horse of choice. I am not quite sure what your point is though.

Previous poster mentioned people talking about MP work for Apple. :)
I'm not sure it's the case for this type of hardware. For me I don't care how much people talk about MP. Still gonna chose it over Windows machine. That was my point (maybe I wasn't specific enough). :)

Oh, I see. I hear you. It would not kill Apple to give us a definite release date, but sometimes I do wonder if they know the exact date themselves. I personally prefer to not give exact dates myself and stick to rough estimates. :D

Oh yes especially in graphic design / web works giving exact date can backfire a lot. Personally I also prefer to give brackets.

There's a definite date. There has to be to get all the teams coordinated, marketing, OF, engineering, documentation, web and so on. The usual approach is to set a definite date, and then if you run into walls that gets (reluctantly) extended. From appearances Apple doesn't give an actual date until they're sure they'll make it. Even then I'm sure there is a lot of last minute 14 hour days making it.

Yeah that works for individuals but not for teams. Invariably the team will slide to the last date of the range, so nobody does it.

It does work for teams :) But team cannot know it. Only manager should know of those brackets and team should get the first date deadline :)

But yes for freelancer it is easier to apply that.

Ah, padding .... yes, a dangerous technique, especially with engineers. Teams will drag their feet with overly aggressive schedules, making them worse than they would have been if they just put something more realistic in.

It depends on the culture too though. From all accounts Apple is quite aggressive internally, so maybe they can get away with it. Where I work the emphasis is on sustainable performance.

Well, if we don't see this beast released by next Tuesday... I suspect that we won't see it until mid-January at earliest.

Tuesday, the 31st is my guess....

I know you're just joking, but..... that would be winter. I feel like no matter how late it is, they want to ship it in the date range that is technically fall, since that's what they claimed they would do. So within the next 7 days. Also people need to get their orders in before the calendar rolls over for financial reasons elaborated above.

Depends, in many cases delivery of said item has to occur within the confines of the fiscal year. Not sure about the IRS....

To my memory, the release was stated to be "December". If the product was ready, I'm sure the release date would have already been stated. My guess is they are dealing with the last few final issues and will do whatever they can to "release" the product in December, even if that means the last day of the month. There is no logical reason to hold back the product if it is ready to go.

Define "ready". Ideally your bug rate comes down to zero a few weeks before release. Then you spend those last few weeks continuing to do QA, and ultimately reassuring yourself that this really is ready to release. If you don't absolutely have to release then you don't, experienced teams knows it's better to release solid code late than buggy code early. In other words, if you haven't had a few weeks with onesie-twosie bugs then your code isn't ready.

With hardware releases it's a little different - at this point they are dealing with bugs in the production process, but it parallels. Ideally there haven't been any bugs for a few weeks and they've been having a smooth production run. And don't forget they need to backfill the stock, there will be a spike on the first day of ordering.

I agree with your comments. It's my guess they are building an inventory for release and are doing everything they can to release the product in December, if possible, even if that means the 31st. I agree it will be pushed back if there are still technical or production issues. Since there has not been an announced delay, I assume there is still hope for a December release.

I highly doubt that they will release it on Dezember 31 or 24th..
It will be next Tuesday 17th, even if they will start shipping them later on.

Tuesday 17th with availability between 1-4 weeks.

guys, can you please stop with the fall thing? The new schedule is DECEMBER!
At WWDC they said fall but now its december. The fall is no longer valid.

Remember the issues with white iPhone 4? Same thing - new information is the latest one and it cancels the previous one. So 31st December would still be valid date for them although I think they will want to push it out earlier. The rumoured next monday would be perfect as they would make some people happy for xmas :)

I suggest you check Wikipedia for date of last day of fall :)
December on your calendar or Christmas decoration in shops doesn't mean it's winter already :)

Well, I can see that you misunderstood what I meant. I know we are still in fall but I wanted to point out that Apple revised their date so we are no longer looking at fall release but we are looking at december release. IF Apple release on 31st Dec then they are still fine.

Fall timeline is no longer valid as it was revised. Thats why I used the white iPhone 4 as example of how things change and get revised.

Being that we haven't had any leaks about palattes showing up at Apple Stores, I think we can safely say that even if they take orders on Tuesday, they won't be available until mid-January.

Good point, OTOH I wouldn't expect them to stock more than a few anyhow. Given how small they are a stock could show up as a medium UPS box. The boxes are probably around 8"x12".
