Its just an update, its not like your phone quits working til you get it.

True, but while I'm waiting for the update it's not like I'm not going to take any pictures. Call me impatient, but the longer the update takes, the more pictures I take with the old software that gives inferior results. I can see taking their time for major updates but it sounds like this one is intended mainly (only?) for one model of phone.

if you're all impatient, why aren't the lot of you sideloading the update?

lot of hot air from the whining going on.

Thats google's strategy for rolling out updates, deal with it.

Don't like it? Complain, or do the well documented alternative to grab the update yourself. Obviously you've chosen the latter.

This isn't any different from the myriad of Apple's "our way or the highway" mentality, except in this case, there's an alternative!

Lol - just wondering aloud why that's their strategy. It's not the end of the world, nor am I making it out to be.

I'll most likely try my hand at flashing the update manually. First time I've done this and should be quite interesting. Anyone have a link to the easiest way to do so?

they roll it out in batches in case there are errors or bugs for users. It is not that they cannot manage...it's just a strategic roll out to avoid chaos if something went wrong.

This ^

Also doesnt Apple have you go to a link to get the update? They dont send them out OTA. Unless that is a new thing they copied from Android :D

Well you'd think so.
The fact remains though that you don't need to wait for OTA and it's pretty easy to flash stuff so I don't see what the point in complaining is.

? Ok....so they "copied" OTA updates and do it better by releasing faster updates available to more devices.

I understand the "facts". Believe it or not, there are those of us who like stock, vanilla Android, but don't want to do all the flashing and rooting.

It seems to be too much to ask for an update roll out that fits with the times. Isn't the idea for our mobile devices to work for us? People get all bent out of shape when having to do ANYTHING through the "archaic" software that is iTunes.

Yet having to sideload a (sometimes) important update through various channels in order to get said update in a timely manner is out of bounds?

TBC, I'm not extremely bent out of shape over it. Just trying to get a decent answer as to the reason. It seems there isn't one. Simply this is Google's strategy - despite a supposedly "inferior" (read behind) competitor offering a much simpler/quicker way to do the same thing.

It would be one thing if they were staggering rolling out a MAJOR update. This is a POINT release....to Nexus devices. How many could we possibly be talking worldwide.....20-30 million? And Google needs to STAGGER this over (its been roughly 4 days so far) a long period of time?

What's the stagger look like? A couple thousand devices an hour?

All I see is impatient whining. Wait for it or sideload it which isn't that hard. You have a choice. I'm choosing to wait.
Either way you are getting a timely update. No other device are getting it and very few even have KitKat. Your just impatient.

I can see his point. Most people buy a Nexus device to get updates as soon as they are released from Google and its been about a week. I'd be kinda ticked off too.

Can't really say that until the update is actually out since it could arrive today, could be another week, could be several weeks.

And no other device is getting it because it's fixes for one device. In general it's not that big a deal if OS updates take a bit. But when they ship their own hardware device and botch something as big as the camera software, you would think they'd want to get the fix out relatively quickly.

I'm not even "ticked off" lol.....just curious.

Lots of defensive people here....oh well. Hopefully one of these days I'll have the fixes to my camera.

4.4.2

Still waiting for 4.4.1 :(
But I've just received 4.4.2 OTA :D
At first restart all my customized keyboard, live wallpaper, launcher, notification alerts seem to work flawlessly, with the settings I had before the update. The only difference I've noticed it's in Audio -> sounds when tap screen that went to on (I always leave it Off)-
P.S. I've received a polite notice from the phone that was suggesting "48% battery ma not be enough for update, please connect your phone to a power source". Which I did.
Next I've found out that it took only 4 minutes to end everything.

It's because I'm comparing to my experience with my iOS devices that I wonder why Google can't do a better job with roll outs.

Oh well - I think we've ruffled enough feathers here. Time to go back to singing kum-bah-yah and only saying good things about the Nexus 5 and Google in general :D

----------

Actually it hasn't been a week yet. This is day 4, I believe.

4 days I believe? If it gets to a week I'll let everyone here know, I can assure you :p

If it bothers you that much then just stick to the iPhone. Problem solved but I'm sure you and I will get it soon enough. Im just not stressing about it. I'm sending this reply just fine without it ;)

Just got a Nexus 5 this morning, kept refreshing for the update all day, then it finally downloaded. Just give it a little time.

It doesn't "bother me".....I'm simply curious - don't really understand the logic behind why Google does it the way they do.

That's fine though - my phone works without 4.4.1. Looking forward to when it will work BETTER with 4.4.1.

And I do stick to my iPhone - just so happens I have a separate phone for work and "play" and I find it redundant having two iPhones.

1st thing tomorrow I will enable ART runtime instead of Dalvik. Really curious about battery improvements.
I've waited for the 4.4.1(2) update because I use whatsapp on daily basis with all my family members
