All you do is clear the data on the Google framework app and go check your update. It will be there waiting. People are saying it has an effect on notifications not working, but I have done this on all my nexus phones, and it work like a charm. This is not hack, or anything like that. Simply go to the Google framework app and clear data, and go back and check for updates. 4.4.2 will be waiting on you.

Ehh - I read the comments by the Google Engineer and I'd rather not add any potential issues.

I can wait. Doesn't mean I can't wonder why I have to wait? (unless I do things myself).

Camera still has a little delay when you tap the button but it is a lot better but I didn't take that many pics before. Very few really. Here is a pic I took in low light just now and the colors are accurate.

Thats a nice pic....

Nope - just waiting.

Still being defensive?

----------

No idea what that is. I buy devices that work for me - not that I have to search the internet for ways to make it work like its supposed to.

Glad its "easily" downloadable and flashable. I prefer an easy OTA download at least within a day of release.

People keep saying I'm complaining.....all I'm asking is - how hard is this to do? To push updates to a relatively small number of Nexus devices?

And if an update isn't ready? DON'T RELEASE IT.

Its baffling how much people bash Apple for "not testing updates" - at least those fixes address problems.

I'd rather have 5 fixes within a month (all which address different issues mind you) that I can get OTA easily the day they are released than have relatively major issues (I'd say camera quality is a pretty big deal) be addressed, then pulled back, then addressed but not released to everyone and if I want it I have to do the leg work......

Again. Just a simple question. "How hard is it?"

You want to know why I ask this question.

My experience on iOS:

-Update released
-Updated downloaded and installed within 10-15 minutes for a point update (may take up to a day for a major OS release).

My experience on Android:
-Update (4.4) released
-Oops I have a GS4 - no dice. Still on 4.2
-Sold GS4, bought Nexus (because for me, timely updates and Vanilla Android are preferred)
-Update 4.4.1 released to address camera quality
-No update pushed to my device after 4 days
-Ahh, NEW 4.4.2 (because 4.4.1 had bugs....why it was released, who knows)
-2 days later, still no update of any kind (but I do have people whining and crying that all I have to do is go download the update myself, install some Android software on my computer and flash the update manually).

Before you bash me further consider this.....if you owned an iPhone and I told you that in order to something "all you had to do" was plug you phone into iTunes to download something (say ringtones)....how many of you would absolutely crucify me and Apple for being "archaic" and "HOLY MOTHER, I have to actually PLUG SOMETHING IN!?!?!.....

nope, just annoyed that the conversation of the thread is flowing to impressions of the phone after the update only to be punctuated by you still complaining about not having it. Everyone else has moved on except you.

I assume you're not a "roll up the sleeves" kind of guy when you want to get something done and would prefer things handed to you.

Depends on what needs doing.

For something that should be as easy as OTA download, install, done - no, I find it a little odd that a company like Google seems to be behind in this. Especially when they are supposedly so much more advanced.

Would love to post impressions....but unfortunately, I wasn't fortunate enough to be part of the first 1% to get the update.

Look forward to posting when I get it. Whenever that may be.

Love how you ignore the points of my post though. ;)

Maybe you could talk about impressions of the phone instead of complaining about the complaining.

I can wait. Doesn't mean I can't wonder why I have to wait? (unless I do things myself).

Oh you can cause I am wondering the same thing. I read an article that stated that day one of the release goes out to something like 1%. Google watches to see if there are any issues, and if not day 2 send it out to something like 25%. Again Google makes sure there are no issues, and over the next 5 to 7 days the % goes up until after about a week it has been sent to everyone.

I am not sure why they do this, but it does explain some of the wait time. I truly understand your frustration because I was in the same boat. I just could not wait, and my method had worked in the past with no issues, so I went for it again. I understand that is not for everyone, and I don't blame you for not trying it. It will get to you soon, but I know that does not help at all.

I still don't understand why people have to get mad at you because you feel you should have the update. I guess maybe because you compared it to Apple, and we all know that can make some people mad.

----------

I got the update yesterday, and it is a good improvement. Nothing earth shattering, but a much need fix to the camera. I was also really surprised by the speaker improvement too. Good update that makes what I think is a really good phone into a great phone. Honestly now I don't feel like this phone lacks anything. The battery life is normal, camera now is just as good as most, the screen looks great, speaker is on par, and the build quality is very nice. Could not ask for too much more.

Well expect maybe a fix for some wakelock issues I have having.

You'll all be happy to know that after an hour of figuring out this adk, adb and all I finally seem to have 4.4.2 sideloaded on my Nexus 5....I think.

If it worked, I'll post impressions.

EDIT:

Definitely louder speakers. Not noticing a huge improvement in the camera. Maybe it takes shots quicker (seems to focus quicker) but not sure.

Happy about the speaker volume increase. Even on max I would miss calls....hopefully that won't be the case anymore.

You've been told a dozen times how google does things, you've been offered not one, but two very quick and easy ways to get the update immediately but have you done this? No. You've posted message after message on page after page of this thread to the point that this is no longer a usefuland fun discussion of this awesome new phone I've got. It's now a thread dedicated to you.

Maybe they're quick and easy, but none of the links I've seen have been to instructions and downloads on websites that looked like official ones. I assume that the downloads linked in various places are the real ones but users shouldn't have to take that chance. And yes, there was a post with a couple links to factory images on google's site, but both of those pages only had downloads for 4.4. It is pretty puzzling why google doesn't just have a page with the OS download available along with instructions instead of leaving it to third party websites.

Anyway, I did get the notification of 4.4.2 OTA so I'll be able to download when I get home and have wifi available.

Not when they're releasing for just Nexus devices initially. They stagger the OS release by phones…then they stagger it again within each phone. Not to mention that the number of Nexus 5 phones sold at this point isn't that high, even if every one of them was updated at once it wouldn't be much bandwidth at all.

You do realize that it isn't just Nexus devices that download those factory images? Developers, normal people, coders, the competition, and every single Android manufacturer downloads those binaries and factory images as soon as that code is released by Google. Imagine how many teraflops of data gets pulled from Google servers at that point. Hell, I download every factory image for the Nexus 5 when it is released (and the demand for 4.2.2 is so high today for Hammerhead, it took a couple of attempts to get the full download.)

And this isn't to start a flame war with you, but you have no idea exactly how Google rolls out OS releases. Neither do I. Only Google knows this and many times it looks almost random.
You also have no idea how many Nexus 5 devices have been sold. Neither do I. All we know is they sold out in 45 minutes on opening day. The Nexus 5 is popular, just as the iPhone 5S is, but how many they have sold, only Google knows.

Yeah, i used my GS3 for 1.5 years til i got my N5 and when i knew there was a update coming (from TMobile mind you), i just went in my settings>about phone> software update, and started it myself(though i read that method wont work for the N5). No waiting that way if you dont want to but i didnt do it everytime. i did it on the last two.

I got 4 OS updates on my GS3 from TMobile in that time which i think is pretty good from a carrier. I also recieved 2 other updates from them that werent OS upgrades but small updates for performance and whatever. You can wait for them or not. Its up to the individual and either way, i dont have any qualms about it. I didnt hear about the mrthod you were talking about til after i got my update on my N5. and well, you mentioned it.

We 'know' the 5S sold 9 million in its opening weekend? Really?

In reality, we are pretty sure that Apple sold 9 million 'iPhones' (aka 5S and 5C together), but Apple won't say how many 5S's were sold.
And we know that Google sold out of Nexus 5's in 45 minutes. But Google won't say how many that was.
These are the only facts we know of, since they come from the company. Your wishful thinking won't change the facts.

Again, it's nice to have your opinion, but it still doesn't mean squat.

----------

Really? You sure? I guess, HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola, etc don't get their images from Google? Very strange.

Fairly safe to assume Apple sold at least 6-7 million iPhone 5S the first weekend. Reports we're saying they saw 3:1 5S to 5C activations ratios.

Factory images for 4.4.2 has been updated: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images

Not sure what sites you were looking at, but from Droid-Life's update article the OTA update was linked to Google's server: http://android.clients.google.com/p...ed-hammerhead-KOT49H-from-KOT49E.537367d5.zip

I'd agree that the update procedure could be made easier for the normal unrooted user, but if you had TWRP custom recovery installed the update could be done in a couple taps (couldn't be easier).

If you want to compare with Apple's practices, it's about as difficult as finding out the images from Apple's web sites for your device (they don't have a web page listing all the images either), shift click in itunes and select the .ipsw file if you couldn't wait for OTA.

A few corrections:

- I'd be surprised if any devices grabbed the full factory images at all, since it's really for recovery purposes. The OTA update's file size was 1.7MB, much smaller than most popular apps in Google Play. Angry Birds apk is 42.3MB, for example.

- Developers/coders/competition/Android manufacturers don't need full factory images, they get the source from AOSP. Developers may need the binaries of the devices drivers, but they're posted at a different link: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/drivers

Google has their reasons of doing a stagger release, but I do not personally think traffic is the problem. They have CDNs just like any other big content companies do. I agree that only Google knows the real release method, and I don't think it's necessary to guess why they do the release the way they do.

My phone received the OTA update yesterday. Seems pretty solid so far. Camera does seem better, not perfect, but a definite improvement.

I have to say, I'm loving this phone. I do miss iOS's lock screen notifications, but I love having the notification light and the Android notification bar. (I'm beginning to prefer the latter more than the former!)

I feel the same way. At first, I was really missing lock screen notifications and 'icon notifications' with the red bubbles and unseen counts. Now, I actually prefer the notification bar.

Is that just in the gallery app or is it also in the other photos app....

Come on Google - you're doing so well merging apps with similar functionality. Get rid of the redundancy!

I'm a bit perplexed by the inconsistency here as well. My new LG G Pad GPE only has the photos app--no gallery app to be seen. Yet, it's only running 4.4 vs. 4.4.2 on the Nexus devices (my Nexus 7 (2013) still has both).

The new GPE devices are the only ones without the gallery. I think that is the direction android is heading....and it is very weird having both the gallery and photo app. I remember reading the nexus 5 still has the gallery and it cannot be removed. It would be for devices going forward.

If you find sideloading using adb hard then stick to your Apple devices lol. Me personally i like getting my hands dirty and learning how things work, this mentality has helped me greatly in my career and life in general. Its like asking a kid these days to try and do homework without a computer, they would not know how to find information in a book lol.
