I agree that it's terrific that there is a really good and viable stock android option. The nexus program was really gearing towards that goal. As it stands, the pixel is a great first generation device.

More importantly, the Pixel 2 can truly be the whole package. Like I said before, this is a straight ball down the middle. Batter up, Google.

It's actually shocking how much stock android doesn't have, like no sound profile or proper battery percentage. This stuff baffles me.

(I actually hate badges!)

The battery percentage omission has been a bit baffling but that changes with Android O.

In fact, take a look at MKBHD's video on Android O posted earlier today--some subtle but cool changes.

So, it *looks* like one can order a black xl 128gb pixel from Google store right now without the wait. I've thought about it but past experiences with nexus devices (most have been unreliable for a daily driver for me in various ways) and the 870.00 price tag makes it a very tough sell...

It's not an iPhone either, not that you said that.

Nexus != Pixel, I know but they are similar concepts so yes I am leary (wary) of dropping the cash on said device
They are night and day different. I have had Nexus phones and they don't compare to the current Pixel. I have both a Pixel XL and a iphone 7+. They both provide a great user experience.

The 2 major issues for me has been data connection dropping and the more major one is text messages not sending. Could be carrier but my s7 edge does a well better job in those areas. There has been other issues as well.

How does the user experience differ between the Nexus 6p and the pixel?

Would anyone buy this device this far into the life cycle?

I haven't had those issues with my Pixel XL. It has been one of the smoothest easiest to use phones i have had.

The major differences in the 6p and Pixel would be the size, the 6p is a big heavy phone compared to the Pixel XL.

The camera is better on the Pixel as well. To me the Pixel has a great blend of hardware and software to create a buttery smooth user experience. Everything just works and works very well for that matter.

I can actually get a 128gb XL right now. I'm so tempted to pick one up. I can't decide between the XL, G6 or S8. I've been on iOS for a year and a half and it's losing its luster. I need a change. The G6 unlocked from B&H for $649 with a watch is very tempting too.

Just seen and watched this, thanks for posting.

Looks like some really cool additions. I love that they're letting you choose the button placement and also giving you access to use your own chosen apps on the left and right of the lock screen.

Very impressive!

May patches are out

Question for you MRU (and other Pixel users).. how did your update go?
I had a weird scenario and a mini panic earlier this morning!
After the update installed normally I rebooted the Pixel and it booted up with all my files/apps/settings/home-screen layouts missing. It was like when I first booted up the Pixel back in December.
I was very annoyed at this point as I hadn't backed up some files and then I had a light bulb moment and remembered there are two partitions for updates on the Pixel phones so I decided to reboot the Pixel again on the off chance it will restore to normal.
When I rebooted it did indeed return to normal with all my files/apps/settings/home-screen layouts etc in tact! Glitch or normal?!

FREAKY!! Yeah my update went normally. That's a real strange one and thankfully you were able to resolve it by rebooting. I would put it down to 'glitch' ... :)

http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/0...probably-shouldnt-buy-a-google-pixel-anymore/

Interesting article from androidpolice about the Pixel. Not entirely sure I agree with everything that the guy is saying.

Sure, I agree that the design of the Pixel feels very 'first gen' what with the bezels, lack of water proofing etc, but it's only very recently that the iPhone got the water/dust resistant thing.

I agree with him on price, I think it is astounding that they're charging what they are for it, even if it is the definitive Android experience to many / most.

But the one thing that strikes me is him saying about the S8 and how anyone torn between the 2 phones should always buy the Samsung. He then goes on to say his preferred device to use is the Pixel, but it doesn't mean he'd recommend buying one.
Odd.

I guess most people would say the same about the BB KEYone. Not many would buy it to use personally with the plethora of other Android devices out there that cost similar money and do more under the hood.

But it's down to the user, and the experience that the user wants. There's way too many tech journalists telling people what is right for them these days based off their own preferences.

Given the chance i'd likely buy a Pixel XL tomorrow. And probably prefer it over the S8 myself.

It basically read to me like "don't get it now, because in 6 months something better will be here." Not sure I agree with it. He also says the price will drop when trying to resell down the road. Well no kidding. That's like any Android phone. By this argument, you probably shouldn't get an S8 now because the Note 8 will be out in 6 months, and it'll be better than the S8 and the price of that will drop.

I also do not get the new obsession with water resistance. It isn't waterproof. None of these phones are. Apple doesn't even cover water damage in their warranty. I've been using cell phones for 20 years. 7 of those years were spent in college/law school. Not one time have I damaged or ruined a phone from water. The Pixel is water resistant enough for the average person. If it's on the counter and gets splashed, it'll be fine. Or if you drop it in a puddle, it'll be fine. That's what most people need. Not a phone you can take scuba diving with you for photography.

Oh, and I asked my wife if she wanted an S8 (she's used every Galaxy since the S3) and she told me she wanted the BB KEYone.

Agree with your whole post.
Whenever you buy new tech, there is always something bigger, better, faster, sexier round the corner.
It's why we're all like we are (weak, addicts etc :p ) !

The S8 / Note 8 scenario you mentioned is the perfect example. Some people on here even are waiting out the S8 for the Note 8.
And your wife has a good head on her shoulders! :D
The KEYone is great!

I think the best argument is just get what you want now if you can afford it. And then worry about what comes down the pipes later.

And yeah, she does. She misses her keyboard. She's missed it since BB pretty much became useless. I think it looks great. And the battery life will be awesome for her. The only worry is the camera. We have 4 kids and gotta have a good camera.

Can confirm camera is great!
Same sensor as Pixel and it's great in low light. :)
