Problem is that Google just isn't making enough of them and the bulk of them is going to Verizon. I've been told by a good friend of mine at Google that they only made/will make 2 million. They just couldn't get enough NAND and Samsung screens. That's it until the next Pixel 2 which I'm told has some custom, in-house designed photo asic hardware.

Had my January update this morning.. it is refreshing to just reboot and tada! Boom! :)
Anyway.. need advice.. I have received my replacement Pixel this morning.. how do I transfer my home-screen layout/app data/other settings (not fussed about sms/call history etc) over to the replacement Pixel in the most pain-free method? .
Do I use the dongle provided? Will that work Pixel to Pixel?
I will greatly appreciate any help/suggestions.
You should be able to simply do the NFC android copy / transfer on initial setup and as it's a pixel to a pixel the home screen arrangement should in theory copy over too ...

If that's the case the pixel won't launch at all in most countries which is a genuinely wasted opportunity and you would expect better from Google and Samsung logistically ...

I'd more impressed when phones offer ISSU (in service software upgrade) that doesn't require a reboot like what Juniper has been doing for a while now. Rebooting is so old school.

If that is the case then the dire stock availability situation makes some sense.
Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case.. as Google must have expected low sales due to a new line and possible Nexus fan club backlash.
I would assume they have allowed for more of the 5" model than the larger 5.5" model to make things worse for the phablet seekers!
Worse still, it seems they have already sold majority of their production yield.. hence the lack of supply in general.
On the upside.. the Pixel 2 range should be more readily available.

More from the XDA guy who's friend works at Google;

"I was told that the majority of units produced go to Verizon because of the deal Google made with them. I think my contact said 1.3 million sold through to consumers with more than 50 percent of that through Verizon."

What's Best Buy's official response as to why they stopped carrying the XL ? It's shows on their website "This item no longer offered" and the few stores I went to check in for it, said they don't sell that phone anymore, just the small Pixel.

LOL now Verizon website shows 03/10/2017 for Pixel XL availability.

So is the Pixel XL just a short limited release from Google ? Just to gauge the public's interest, as a test ? And once all the supply is taken up soon, it's gone until the Pixel 2 later this year ?

Nope, shows sold out and back ordered until March. That's two months out. To me only the 1% of diehards would be cool waiting for that, but the average Joe Blow public guy would never sign up for that, they'd say, screw it I'll just take the Galaxy S7 or iPhone 7 instead.

99% of the average smartphone buyers, walking into the a phone store to trade in or upgrade their current phone, or broke their current phone and need a new one A.S.A.P. will no way say, that's cool, call me in 2 months when they come back in. I think most want to walk out of the store with their shiny new phone, setup and running.

Holy cow, the Pixel desperately needs HDR mode on. Some of those pics were horrible.

Kudos to the 3T. Did the nougat update help their camera or something?

I've always said, I don't find the Pixel camera that great really. The s7 was way better in most situations.

Interested to see how the 3T camera results stack against the OP3 which was mediocre. I don't think the 3T upgraded camera hardware and the OP3 was too noisy, overexposed, and had poor video quality and anti shake.

JC Bagnell did a decent OP3 camera breakdown rather than just these run-of-the-mill static scene/subjects only fluff. Good for the price and an Instagramming but not for me.

Not sure how you guys feel about buying used but there's plenty of XLs available on Swappa. I got a 32gb in mint condition with the Daydream and five cases for $825.

Looking like that may be the only way to actually get a Pixel XL. I just checked the Google store itself, shows "Out of stock" completely on the Silver XL, none for the Blue XL, and only the 32GB in Black, which is of course on back order.

Verizon now stating March delivery dates for the XL.

Best Buy stopped selling the XL.

That's an improvement, when I was looking for XLs a month ago, they were going for well over MSRP on Swappa.

I managed to order a Black 128 XL from Google during the 5 minute window they were in stock back in December and got it a couple days later and absolutely love the phone. If they're going on Swappa, with accessories for close to MSRP, Id jump on it if I were still looking for one.

Not sure about overseas but here in the UK.. Google t&cs say warranty only covers original buyer with proof of purchase (I assume from a proper retailer if not Google Store).

They will tell you to go back to the place/person you got it from for warranty repairs/exchanges.. if you cannot prove you are the original purchaser.

This was the main reason I had to pass up on an amazing used XL deal (£500 for a good as new Quite Black 32gb) in November.. and reluctantly paid for a normal Pixel direct from Google.

I asked Google about my dodgy charger that came with mine, they wouldn't touch it and said I had to go back to Carphone Warehouse.

This is bizarre if true. I don't understand the point. Was it just their version of a proof of concept test run to see if the market would be into a high profile Nexus-like device?

I'd heard it was the same here in the States. I'm bit confounded by this policy if true....is it specifically just to limit scalping, or maybe to keep people from grabbing the unlimited hi-res photo/video Google Photos option and then reselling? I cannot see any other reason to have such a policy and frankly, to re-use a phrase from the Verge, seems pretty user hostile. Here's a thought Google---if you're concerned about scalping/reselling for profit, make more damn phones.

Apple will nickel and dime you just about every chance they get but even they tie their warranty, regular or extended (Applecare+) to the device, not the owner.

It is starting to seem like this could be real ? Best Buy discounted the Pixel XL, said it no longer sells that phone, only the tiny Pixel. Verizon is back ordered until March on the XL's, and Google Store show's most XL's out of stock, no Silver's, and only 32GB in the Black.

I did find it strange as it is still their charger, anyway I ended up buying one from Anker instead and put the Google one back in the box lol.

Pretty sure Apple would have given me a new charger there and then even if I did buy an iPhone from CPW.

You guys don't find this strange ?

- Best Buy pulling the Pixel XL from their website, and not available to order in stores anymore, and the sales staff saying they don't carry that specific phone anymore.

- Verizon having MAJOR backorders on the XL. Most dates from Verizon now showing March delivery dates. This phone has been out for 3 months already, and now all of a sudden is out of stock for 2 months.

- Google Store out of stock on most of the XL's, the Silver is not even an option anymore from them right now, the Black and Blue versions only available in 32GB, and have a 3 to 4 week wait.

Again this phone has been out since October, but all of a sudden it seems near impossible to get a 128GB brand new Pixel XL, especially the Silver/White version. Something is up

Yes they would have. I'm not happy with how the warranty is on this phone. I purchased my Pixel through Verizon and used the built in support option on the phone. I went through about 2 hours worth of troubleshooting with Google support which determined I needed a replacement device. When it came time for the replacement the rep got my IMEID then a few minutes later asked where I purchased it from. Since I purchased the phone from Verizon I was told there was nothing they could do and I needed to go through Verizon.

So I went to the Verizon store and had to explain the issue and all of the troubleshooting steps I did with Google. After that they tested it out and then provided me a "certified like new" replacement which only has a 90 day warranty as per their website.

I think I'll be returning to an iPhone if anything happens to this replacement device because had I had an iPhone (doesn't matter where it was purchased from) Apple would have replaced it and would not have told me to return to where I bought the device from. And Apple certified devices are often better than their brand new devices. Also, Apple lets you keep the remaining amount of warranty even if it's a replacement device.

This has been a frustrating experience for me, I really like the phone but I just don't trust that the phone won't have any issues.

I know how you feel, until the last few months I was an iPhone, iPad and MacBook user but I fancied a change. I love the Pixel but having to buy a new charger for rapid charge left a sour taste.. Also the Zenbook I bought to replace my MacBook is garbage (not a Windows 10 issue, a build/spec issue) so yeah, only myself to blame. :p
