So my battery life has dropped to about 4.5 hrs SOT. Haven't done any updates. Installed a couple apps so perhaps one of them is causing it.

I don't use facebook lol.

I just remembered that I have been playing a bit of music through the built in speakers. So I think that may explain my reduced SOT. I will keep the thread updated.
Correct. The phone won't sleep when it's playing music.

By brutal you mean terrible?

I was thinking of picking one up too and dump my S6.
I threw a TPU case on my 5x and honestly I don't notice the build quality that much. Device is worth the money, I'm just not a stock Android guy. Feature for feature the S6 is a better device, IMO.

I'm really contemplating trying a 6P but idk if I'd like that big of a phone. I like the size of my 6S and 5X

If you've got a 6S, you'll find the 6P fairly big... I lasted 4 months with my 6P and went back to a 5X a couple of weeks ago. Performance isn't as good as the Nexus 6P, but there's nowt in it day-to-day and being a "normal" sized phone I'm not scared of smashing in my pocket helps too!

The 6P is a stunner though, if I could have physically lived with it, I would have kept it.

Anyone know where I can pick up the official 6p case in black? (the one with the pattern fabric back)

I've been checking eBay/Amazon and the play store for what seems like months and they never seem to be in stock.

I bought mine from play store ..

One word of advise with this case however, it doesn't play well with tempered glass screen protectors. Because it's a tight fit and because of the lip on the front of it, if you use a tempered screen protector this case will cause bubbling & lifting along some of the corners and near the simple for power button.

Essentially if you use glass screen protector, don't go for this one.

I'd recommend the Nilkinn thin case myself. Super thin, super light weight. Works great with screen protectors too ...

Thanks. Don't use a screen protector (though I guess I probably should!)

Like the look of that Nilkin case though. Think I may well pick one of those up until they finally come back into stock. I'm a fan of slim cases anyway so nice to have two options.

Out of interest what screen protector is that? Might as well get one at the same time if it's cheap(ish)

I use the spigen glass.tr - Amazon had them for £5 when I got mine :)

Project Fi now open to everyone and the Nexus 5X is only $199. My wife has this phone and we both have the Project Fi service (I have the 6P).

If you are on Wifi most all the time, with just a little tweak to your settings for cell usage (restrict background cellular service to certain apps), you can save big time on your monthly phone bill. We have both consistently used less than a gig per month (about 500MB each). On Project Fi, you only pay for what you use for data on top of $20 for unlimited talk and text. So our bills have been less than $25 per month.

This is a really killer deal, so just spreading the word. The 5X is probably along the lines of an iPhone 5C in terms of build quality, but has a really wonderful camera. And for $200 contract free, that is just a steal. Let me know if you have any questions about the service.

I saw the pricing on Project Fi and it really hurts people who are not constantly on a WiFi network. They charge $10 per GB and I for instance use at least 2GB a month - so that makes it $40 a month.

I bought my iPhone 6S+ at full price and I'm on a T-mobile family plan where I'm paying $35 a month.. So this might not exactly work out very cheap.

And @Surf Donkey - how do you manage to use only about 500MB a month?

Fi is absolutely best for people mostly on Wifi networks. If you are a big data muncher, the only real advantage is that you don't have to pay for big blocks of overage data. You just pay what you use. And you can quit at absolutely any time.

As far as usage, I found it actually quite easy. I was normally using 2-3 GB on AT&T before my switch to Fi. Then I just changed my usage a bit for Project Fi and am finding only about 500MB per month:

1) Connect to Wifi Networks. No brainer, but when at the store, coffee shop, friends house, etc, I just get their networks in my phone. Over time this list grows.

2) Project Fi automatically connects to open wifi with VPN. Caveat on this is that there is not a lot of truly open networks out there, you normally must agree to the terms. I do find it from time to time when driving or walking around.

One big thing that I have read that helps is if you have Comcast. They have open wifi on almost every home router that people rent. (personally I think this is awful, and one of the many reasons why I don't have Comcast). But for Fi it is a big advantage as it will provide VPN secured wifi any time it finds a Comcast open wifi.

3) I restrict cellular data for music, photos, etc. Just any app that seems to run off data hungry. I download my Google Music playlists offline.

4) And perhaps the best, I just don't mindlessly use my phone when I am out and about. I don't Facebook when out. I don't refresh reddit just because I am sitting and feel awkward at a bus stop. I read a book, I look around, I talk with people. Honestly, this is very refreshing to me. I didn't realize just how much I had my face in the phone for no real good reason. The only big problem is that everyone else seems to have their face in their phone too :)

I looked at Fi when I had my 6P. I do like the concept a lot and think it will be a great deal for a lot of people. I think Google is on the right track to some extent.
I work in IT security. That being said I see a lot of risks with always connecting to open wifi networks. Sometime they are honeytraps for unsuspecting people. Your device name and info is being broadcast to everyone on the free open wifi network. Then the Comcast part has all kinds of privacy issues alone.

Even with the VPN as a part of wifi assist feature?

Its the public wifi issues. Like airports and such when you have to agree to their terms of use. Do you know that can be spoofed? There are so many wanna be hackers stalking Starbucks and Airports wifi. Free wifi has so many risks and vulnerabilities it is mind blowing. Your device's information is leaking data to everyone on the network.
What kind of wifi speeds are you getting through the vpn software? Does that take a chunk of the throughput?

Haven't run any speedtests, but I'll give it a try next time, with and without. I suspect most open wifis are somewhat limited, so VPN won't be hugely noticeable.

You bring up a good point on a problem with how Project Fi is currently implementing this. The VPN only works on fully open wifi networks (ie those that it automatically connects to). But if you have to select a network because of a click-though, then it doesn't connect via VPN. I don't really understand why this is the case, have requested a change for this, and hope it is implemented.
