I'm sure hoping SSD will be standard in new iMacs.

Agreed. My Mid-2010 iMac whilst running great (especially with the SSD I installed myself inside) is officially obsolete in terms of wireless connectivity and not being able to get the latest OS inside (no High Sierra -> Mojave for me). I would like to take the leap to 27" 5k from the current 21.5" 1080p screen. However, Apple's policy on the HDs is the only thing holding me back as it's just ridiculous that in 2018 they are using HDD's or even Fusion drives. Sorry Apple, but if you are (officially) justifying this by saying that HDD's are handy for people who need space (whilst just about every other desktop computer has an SSD inside), why not make the M.2 SSD (which takes no extra space) the standard and make the HDD a cheap BTO option (as it's obvious you do not want a thinner chassis because you are sticking with HDD's). I know I can get the 256GB SSD drive as BTO but the price is tough to swallow (you can get a Samsung 860 Pro 512GB SSD a lot cheaper).

I'd really love to continue giving Apple the big bucks but I won't buy obsolete tech and that is pretty much what the iMac has become because the SSD option is only an expensive BTO. If they continue this trend, it's Windows for me then.

I just don't see there being a redesign at tomorrows event, there have been hardly talk about the iMac with only Ming Chi Kuo saying that the display will get a "significant" upgrade, other than that the only other thing that's mentioned is a spec update. It will of course be interesting to see what the specs are updated to? are we talking 6 core? 8 core? but then again surely Apple won't want to cross over into iMac Pro territory with the iMac.

This event would be a good opportunity for Apple to include the T2 chip in all Mac computers, that's why I'm expecting some sort of redesign. I don't like the fat bezels, I think the current iMac (especially the smaller one) looks dated because of it, but I don't really care about that as long as they fix the thermals.
We already know that including the T2 doesn’t necessitate a redesign.

There is no evidence of a physical redesign in any of the supply chain intelligence.

The internals needs a redesign for sure for the new cpu otherwise the throttle and heat will be much bigger problems than mbp 2018
It seems on 15 November radeon 590 will be release

Looks more likely the update will be minor bumps in CPU etc.
Don't expect a redesign, but I do hope they put the iMac Pro's cooling system in the new iMac, although again, I wont hold my breath!

If they dont change the intern design with better cooling, then forget about this imac gen

I have a question. We can all agree that the iMac is due for a redesign. But have there been any rumors that Apple is planning one, for this year or any other?

I have a 2013 iMac and I'm really ready to upgrade. But my concern is that I'll do it this year, and next year they'll come out with a full redesign. I've waited this long, and could probably wait another year if I knew the chances of a redesign were really high. But I guess Apple never shares their plans.

Yep, there have been rumors since last year, I guess... Someone, who supposedly worked for Foxconn wrote on Reddit that iMac will get full redesign. But nothing more since then...

As pointed out a while ago by someone in these forums, the 2012 iMac also had no evidence of a physical redesign leading up to its keynote reveal. The supply chain for Macs is a much easier thing to mask versus the iPhone.

If there’s no redesign, why even mention it at an event? Just like the recent MacBook Pro spec update, all Apple needs to do is a silent update. A keynote is overkill.

Now I know the last iMac update was just a spec update and was still announced with fanfare at a keynote, but it was only because it was announced alongside a brand new product: the iMac Pro.

Because the event isn’t about the iMac, this event is also about the iPad Pro redesign, new Apple Pencil and Mac’s, a part of which Apple could just memtion the spec updates to certain models like the iMac and MacBook.

At this point, if there is just a minor spec bump I wont be investing in an iMac. I'll more likely wait to see what the Mac Pro brings next year......

This is probably wise, and I'm encouraging myself to follow the same approach. It seems likely that if the iMac doesn't get a redesign this year, it will next year. It's overdue for that, given the changes they've made to all of the other Mac lines. One thing I'm hoping for is a keyboard with TouchID.

That said, if the upgrade to the display, processor, and other features is significant, I might go for it. I don't have any problem with the current design, and if there is a redesign next year, I can always upgrade a year after that. I typically don't upgrade my desktop that frequently, but if the new design is compelling enough I'd consider it.

I'm not sure Apple realizes how cool it would be to do a new svelte design for the imac. Whatever.. I guess. I really am curious as to what tomorrow will bring on the imac and this supposed more "pro" mini. I wonder if it is at all possible that they would make a pro mini (or modular whatever) short of the mac pro, but one that matched the imac specs so we could choose our own monitor. But that option would likely make a much more expensive price than an imac alone I would assume.

By the way, a "significant upgrade" to the display means what exactly? Certain not just a graphic processor bump... To me it would be something like (the unnecessary) 8k or similar, or even form factor.

Is it too much to hope that we will all be happily surprised?

Some of the things that might persuade me to upgrade, other than the obvious processor bump:
  • A 1080p camera, like in the iMac Pro
  • A keyboard with TouchID
  • A better display (not even sure what this would be, but curious to see what they come up with)
  • Faster SSD
  • Space grey color config
Other than that, as I think about it, I'm not even sure what else I'd want. I've been pretty happy with my iMac as it is.

I've waited this long, and could probably wait another year if I knew the chances of a redesign were really high. But I guess Apple never shares their plans.

So Apple has registered 3 new desktop computers according to the Eurasian database. It’s important to note that Apple does not need to register new desktops if they are only doing a spec bump. For example, the iMac has had the same number since 2012 (the last redesign). We can assume that if these new registered desktops are infact iMacs, the iMac is getting some sort of redesign - what type of redesign is unknown.

The iMac supply chain is much smaller than the iPhone, and frankly the media doesn’t care as much about the iMac as they do iPhone. So a lack of rumors is not necessarily a sign of no redesign.

Of course these new registered desktops could also be the Mac Mini or they could be registering the new Mac Pro ahead of its release next year, but it seems a bit early to do that. The most likely guess is that of the three new registered desktops, one number is the Mac mini, and two numbers are the 21” and 27” iMac’s.

I guess we will find out tomorrow!!!!

if we also consider that a new MacBook and Mac Mini is coming, and neither chassis has shown up in rumors, means it's equally possible that a new iMac design has been kept private until tomorrow. We can but hope!

I would rather much see HDR and rounded corners for a super thin bezel before 8K. That just seems like overkill to me.

But hopefully if the stars align, we should have more desktop options presented before us tomorrow morning :)

I have a vague recollection that the last chassis update with the thin edges was pretty much unknown until the day of release but I may be wrong.

Actually both the new MacBook and an updated Mac mini have both shown up in rumors from supply chain leaks. And supply chain leaks have been explicit about the iMac getting a spec refresh.

That's not to say that a redesign can't also have been kept private, of course, but it would seem unlikely given that various other things have leaked.

I think Face ID will be on the imac, I would think it’s a pretty easy update. Camera is already there. Having to enter my passcode is so old school.

Do you mind me asking what you do on your iMac, please?
The reason I ask is because your "wishes" are pretty much weird. Let me explain ;)

1080p camera - ok, if you do facetime or skype that is reasonable but not necessary for iMac COMPUTER
keyboard with TouchID? Well, nice addition but again, same as above
A better display? Sure, totally but if you don't know what then what are you actually missing?
Faster SSD - that is great request but those SSD option are already very fast so what do you do to need even faster?
Space grey? Sure, that is nice and cosmetic feature that would be nice.

Anyway, you don't seem to care too much about the actual computer part. More cores, threads, better GPU, less throttling due to better thermals, more ram etc. those would make the COMPUTER a better one.

So, what do you do that those are not important and you basically "want" more of a tiny updates over the bigger ones?

Don't mean it in a bad way, just that the post implies that you are content and all you want now is little nice touches :)

There's been so much talk about an iMac redesign that it would make sense for Apple to comply to this demand. I mean many if not most of us do not want to buy a simple spec refresh and then within a year or two regret it when the eventual redesign emerges. On the other hand, Apple isn't exactly known for listening to its customers... And why should they when their offerings sell at hot cakes despite the high cost.

I'd be happy if Apple made SSDs standard drives in iMacs and offered a space grey alternative. It would also be great if they changed the display sizes the better suit the current trends. I mean display sizes are slowly but surely going up and even in 2010 when I bought my current iMac the situation was that the 21.5" was a bit too small but the 27" was an overkill for a smaller room. They should offer a 25" iMac and a 30" iMac instead. Especially if they go with SSDs, even with those M.2 SSDs and make the chassis lighter with smaller bezels.

One thing's for sure though... I'm either sticking with my 2010 iMac or getting a Windows-PC if Apple continues to not offer SSDs as standard drives. It's the one thing where I decline to pay the 'Apple tax'.

Do you know enough about how Face ID works to be able to say that it's a pretty easy update? :)

For the first time in several years I am actually looking forward to this event.
New iMac ? Maybe. My Late 2012 is about due for a replacement.
New Mac Mini ? If it’s spec is better than my current or at least close enough to the new iMac , I might consider it instead of an iMac.
iPad Pro - I have one so I’m good for a while.

All the other stuff is good too.

I just want something powerful and good for my photography editing.
