I think Face ID will be on the imac, I would think it’s a pretty easy update. Camera is already there. Having to enter my passcode is so old school.
Apple is not going to integrate an A11 Bionic into the Mac quite yet. Let’s call it a T3, for grins...would be too expensive right now. You will probably have to wait until Apple switches over Macs to an A-Series CPU, then it’s a freebie for them and would be a launchn feature.

I don't think an A11 would be more than $15 more expensive compared to an A10. IHS Markit (however wrong they may be) have consistently rated the iPhone SoC at about $30 or so, and it seems optimistic that the TSMC N-2 node would much cheaper than half the price of the N-1 node. The T2 launched at N-1 and a T3 would now come in at a similar trailing node.

We already know that including the T2 doesn’t necessitate a redesign.

There is no evidence of a physical redesign in any of the supply chain intelligence.

But it necessitate a new motherboard. That would be a good opportunity to rearrange the internals and if this happens on the 20th anniversary with the current housing I think it's safe to say that Apple won't redesign the iMac for at least a few more years.

Moving to 8th/9th Generation Core CPUs requires a 300-Series PCH and a new motherboard design anyways, as the 2017 iMac is using the Z170 (100-Series) PCH, so I guess it’s possible for Apple to put the T2 into the iMac they introduce today (hopefully). I expect new, reworked internals to accommodate the 6- and 8-core CPUs as well as the larger PSU needed to power them, but no new industrial design beyond moving to the iMac Pro chassis to improve the cooling.

If Apple does decide to move to its own CPUs for the Mac, then I expect a new design at that time, not before.

Wherever
MacBook Pro silently updated, maybe the iMac is next?

Apple also today announced new MacBook Pro graphics options that will bring powerful Radeon Pro Vega graphics to MacBook Pro for the first time. These new graphics options deliver up to 60 percent faster graphics performance for the most demanding video editing, 3D design and rendering workloads.

:(

I thought that since Ming Chi-Kuo said there was going to be a new iMac with "improved display" this year that we had a pretty good chance, but that's not enough to go by.

Hey, for all we know they're almost done with a redesign, or at least an update, and it will be quietly released soon.

The new mini is not going to be quite powerful enough to be a substitute for the current top end normal imac though. ^ cores is nice but not everything.

Also, with all these new slick releases the current imac is suddenly looking very dated in it's present form.

But they're still only using those LG screens. Thought maybe they'd introduce their own display, but I guess they're saving that for the Mac Pro release.
Yeah, the LG UltraFine are not worth it IMO, unless you get a very good deal. A new Apple display would be nice but you can use any 3rd party monitors. Some of them offer much better value.

True, I mean, if what we're waiting for is a redesigned iMac then that would be worth waiting until next spring or June. Going by how long it took for the 2016 MBP, they can take quite a while with redesigns.

If the mini just had the new gen processor and was a little tiny bit beefier, then it might be an alternative for me at least. I'm just not quite feeling it in comparison to my current imac specs.

Ummm, yes, I don't think that the new iMac mini is designed to replace the iMac...

Dated? The current iMac still looks terrific and blows the look of every other desktop available out of the water.
