7th generation i7-7700k - this is where your max´d out new iMac is. (a processor being sold in Q1 2017)
8th generation i7-8700k - you might have this in one for your macbooks?
9th generation i7-9900k - you can buy this one and build an hackint0sh if you want too.

if not now, when?

Everyone who was hoping for a new imac announcement, what will you do now?

continue to wait?
buy current imac?
imac pro?
6 core i7 mac mini?

GREAT QUESTION.

I need some kind that has, or can be run through, a desktop monitor for design work.

Mac Mini? I've just had a look at pricing here in the UK store and it looks like it would cost me £1600 for a unit with roughly comparable specs to the 2015 MacBook Pro I bought for £900 (3.1ghz i7, 16gb, 500gb SSD) - which incidentally, has as many USB ports!

iMac Pro? Sure, if I win the lottery this weekend.

Current iMac? Still think it's a great machine, but loathe to fork out now for a something that feels like it's at the end of a design phase and is full of ageing tech.

I will probably try and pick up a second hand iMac or just build a new PC and continue to use the laptop hooked up to the same screen...

What kind of sale was it? Any better than Education prices?

I got a £250 off, which was fine with me. Not sure that's any better than the educational price though?

Personally, I don't think the 2017 is a bad option for anyone who needs a machine now and was waiting for a new model... It literally has no issues with video editing, photoshop, gaming, bootcamp or anything else I need it for. All I did was by some genuine RAM on Ebay and upgrade it to 16GB pretty much straight away.

Well, I guess my gambit with purchasing a 2017 iMac in July turned out well for me, lol. I would've been kinda heartbroken if I had waited until today. My bets are on a redesign at WWDC along with the Mac Pro redesign. I mean, if they're truly going to skip 2018, 2019 has to have a major redesign. However, I still think there is about a 50/50 chance of a minor coffee lake refresh a la 2018 MacBook Pro in store: perhaps November.

Same here.
I'm very happy with mine and look forward to 2019/2020 full redesign (if it happens)

I won't be getting a new one until July 2021, when AppleCare+ expires. By then I expect a full redesign with ARM being ubiquitous across the lineup. Those will be exciting times.

I don't see why.

Few things in the world of Apple are as consistent as this: Any sentence that begins with, "Apple has to..." is going to be wrong.

Yeah, you're right. I just strongly believe that their best selling, tentpole desktop won't have to wait much longer for the MacBook Pro treatment

I always buy refurbished and applecare which in my opinion has best resale value so updating is not a biggie considering my machine actually pays for itself.
As for ARM in desktops... I'm not sure how I feel about it at this point haha.

My iPhone 7 is a refurbished one. There is a lot of value to buying refurbished. With my iMac I wanted the top spec so I had to go through the education store and then upgrade the ram to 40GB from the 8GB default config myself for the best value. Still expensive as **** tho lol

I think what apple has done with the A12X today is a clear example of ARM being the future: they are working hard and fast—they're getting there. I wouldn't be surprised if the A12X rivals the new MacBook Air's wimpy 1.6 GHz dual core coffee lake in benchmarks. And I think in real world testing, the iPad Pro will surpass the new MacBook Airs in a lot of meaningful scenarios due to the simple fact that A12X and iOS 12 in tandem have a significant software optimization advantage over x86 and macOS architecture. the transition to ARM will be a huge pain in the ass and will have a lot of problematic, ****** stuff about it, but I think it's necessary. having custom Apple silicon will be a major differentiating factor and will tidy up a lot of legacy loose ends and improve the experience in a bevy of very direct, material ways for the end user.

Can you explain how it 'actually pays for itself'? Do you buy it then resell it soon thereafter at around the same price? I am another who was counting on an update today, as I need to update my late 2012 iMac.

I feel like a frickin' genius now. o_O

I bought the last 12" MacBook and the last 27" iMac at launch, way back in June 2017, 1.4 years ago.

Apart from being a full home pc it's also my "freelancer" machine :)
I look for 1-2 small projects a month and within 3-4 months the computer paid for itself.
I sell them 1-2 years down the road if something better shows up in refurbished store.

I think I'm going to give it until Black Friday and hope some silent spec bump comes around when the MacBook Pros get Vega graphics. Otherwise I guess I'll be ordering a 2017 with the highest processor since it's at least comparable to an 8600K. Don't think I can justify an iMac Pro when I don't have the need for 8 cores, 32GB RAM, and 1TB SSD even if Micro Center discounts it to around $4000.

My iMac is 3 years old January, so I was planning to update it. Looks like I might only put in extra 3rd party ram instead :(.

Did the iMac prices increase in Europe ? The price for the top spec Mac mini defiantly isn't mini!

I don't have a dog in this fight since I moved up to the iMac Pro earlier this year, but I feel for you guys and gals waiting for a new iMac. I'm sorry you have to wait!

I assume you'll be waiting until at least March, but June is even more likely. For those of you that need a new iMac now and are not looking for a low-end iMac solution, I would give strong consideration to the base model iMac Pro and look for it on sale. With a touch of patience, you can get it on sale with no tax for $4,500. Really not a bad deal for the level of machine you get.

At any rate: I feel for you, hang in there, and best wishes moving forward with your purchasing decisions!

I've been considering this recently. It's overkill for me, but it does meet all of my needs/wants now (minus FaceID or TouchID). I do get it refurbished or on sale, then it's about a $1k difference. That's not a big deal for a work computer that I'll have for five years.

What you want will come at a higher price
[doublepost=1540915277][/doublepost]In the mean time late 2017 iMac when I get it in mar or may will be good enough for me

The Late 2017 iMac is almost 2 year old machine, so what's the matter if it cost less than the most expected iMac?
I want something new and power ASAP, although I don't want to purchase the iMac Pro

I can not understand why Apple after 4 events in 2018 didn't update the most selling machine that most pro use!
In my opinion the should drop the mac mini, anyone who wants it for professional use (mid speced like) (and why a pro photographer or videographer consider to buy a machine without daticated GPU, heavy use could burn it down! lol) if could buy a legit iMac with the same and maybe less money...
Apple used to be minimalistic, now they release the Pro the Air the simple the special etc

Actually, I’ve just found something that makes the odds of a november refresh very high in my eyes. Look at this update to the macbook pro page.

They’re planning some quiet product refreshes in november, it seems

Per this Macrumors article, expect it November 14th:
Macrumors Article said:
The new configurations are set to be custom-order only from Apple's online and retail stores, with availability at Apple Authorized Resellers also expected, from Wednesday, November 14. Apple has yet to release pricing details.

Well, thats a bummer... I'm probably going to buy 2017 model with SSD, can't wait anymore because my beloved Imac 27" 2011 can't run mojave and Xcode 10 after update in spring.

Macbook Pro is great, I love space grey color and design, but I used to big screens. The only downside is price for custom models with SSD - I don't live in US.
