It’s all good, I’m excited for a new iMac as well, I need to upgrade from my 2012 iMac. Would love a new design but it’s looking like it will be a spec bump.

No redesign... incredibly disappointing. The iMac is a horrible looking computer imo. Needs <7/8mm bezels to modernise it’s look, along with cooling that works..

I think so, he also replied to someone who asked “are we seeing a new iMac design” and he said “negative”
[doublepost=1552825463][/doublepost]Ming Chi Kuo did say he expected the iMac to be updated in Q4 of last year, obviously that never happened. Maybe the iMac got delayed and Mark Gurman is hinting at a refresh very soon, Kuo was interesting tho because he mentioned a spec update and "significant display improvements"

My guess an iMac with updated processors, 6-8 cores? graphics improvements and True Tone display, could True Tone be the significant display improvement that Ming Chi Kuo was talking about?

I, too, would love a new design.

However, there's another way to look at a spec bump rather than viewing it as a disappointment just because the case isn't altered*:

With the ARM-Mac cresting the horizon, the line of Macs that immediately precede their arrival are likely to be the pinnacle of the current 'classic' Mac. Everything's been optimised and iterated to the best it can be with the current architecture. Everything that follows with the new breed of Mac will take a while to iron out the kinks. The first ARM-Mac models will need a shakedown, and owners of their direct ancestors can wait this out from the comfort of a reliable computer.

*There's always the chance that the rumoured spec-bumped iMac will have a couple of design tweaks that make it a refinement of the current design, without being classed as a full re-design.

I’m in a really bad spot right now. The HD on my 27” 2013 iMac has failed and I need an immediate replacement as I am working remotely right now with no option to go to my employer for at least another 1-2 weeks. I plan on getting the 27” 3.8 i5 as that is the only model available in stock.

I would love to hold out for the refresh, or at least upgrade to the 4.2 i7, but even those are 2 week build outs.

If I purchase a machine today, and new ones are released during the March 25 event, I should be able to just take back the purchased machine and exchange for the new, of course with any additional costs of the newest model, correct?
You can use a USB SSD in the interim.

While I would like a redesign, I do also like the current design. I own a 2012 iMac that was the first thin looking design and it’s been a great desktop, by far my favourite.

A spec bump wouldn’t be disappointing for me, considering what I’ll be upgrading from (2012 none Retina) it will be a big jump. There is always a chance that they alter the design a little anyway, maybe add a space grey option.

You can return it within 14-days with no restocking fee.

But as has been suggested, just boot your existing machine from an external HDD via USB. Use Internet Recovery to install macOS on it.

Thanks, I’ll check into the external HD option. I do however have a $500 trade-in value for my machine on its way, and was thinking of applying that to this new machine, lessen the pain of the purchase!

If they do announce new models they likely won’t be available for another few weeks at least - maybe mid April. Highly unlikely they’ll be available on the day of the announcement. You might be able to do pre-orders.

Man, this is still so rough to decide as I use the machine everyday for work stuff and large files (1-2GB each). I worry about the speed and reliability over USB as I’ve really only ever used external drives as backup and not to work directly off of.

I feel the same way about not being available immediately (unless just small spec bumps), and probably not in store until April at earliest.

I suppose I just need to bite the bullet, accept that it is what it is and enjoy a nice new working machine with a snazzy 5k Retina display.

I ran an iMac for a year and a half off an external FireWire 800 SSD.

It functions the same way, albeit somewhat slower than an internal SSD (although faster than an internal spinning hard drive). Remember though that just like you need to backup an internal primary boot drive, you should also backup an external primary boot drive.

You will not have any speed or reliability issues. Just get a Samsung T5 external SSD. It's a cheap and easy solution to your problem.

Don’t panic.

I hope no imac bec that would mean no redesign
[doublepost=1552904445][/doublepost]I hope they keep the imacs for wwdc

Coffee Lake are the 8th generation intel processors. Probably one of the biggest jumps in performance between generations in the past 10 years.

That sounds great, i'm waiting for Apple to update the iMac so that i can upgrade from my 2012 iMac. Sounds like if they update to Coffee Lake, it will be a big upgrade for me and worth getting!

I would say so. Definitely a big jump from 2012.

But I guess it depends on what you use the computer for. I believe I bought my PC around 2012 also and the only reason I want a new one is because I’d like to try macOS.

But my PC currently does everything I need it to, except it can’t run Youtube videos at 1080P 60 FPS. So I suppose that another reason to upgrade.

I mainly use it for light video editing, photo editing in Pixelmator Pro (which i also use on my iPad Pro to carry on projects while on the go) writing, some light gaming such as Two Point Hospital, Tropico (altho i play that on my iPad Pro now that it's been released for IOS) and general everyday things like watching Netflix, web browsing and so on.

I do love the iMac's 27" screen for video editing, it's great. I think the 5K display will be a big upgrade, especially when looking at photos and editing them.

Store pages are back online. No new iMac…

Despite no new iMac today, I think we may see it later this week (tomorrow perhaps), next week, or the week after.

I think Apple might be staggering the releases to maximise press attention. They’ve done this before.

Hardware products still to be updated/introduced:

• iMac
• AirPods
• AirPower
• Apple Watch straps (spring collection)
• (And possibly new iPhone colours)
