Ordered the base model 5k with 512 storage to replace my 2014 iMac. At the end of the day, it’s the best value in the Mac lineup. Now you can get 6 cores with the best display on the market for $2k. And I can still upgrade the RAM myself.

I think a spec update like today’s is great, but its such a painfully lazy update: no t2, no display update, no change in design whatsoever, no space grey, no face id. Hey, at least they arent taking anything away. I dont feel like im missing much with my 2017, but it would have been great if they had done this last summer

FAN NOISE HERE WE COME! ;)

So here we are.

I want one. Should I buy now? Or how likely would a new iMac with redesign be in the near future? Also how to they hold up in comparison with a mac mini + awesome display?
Get an iMac Core i5 6-core. The screen is glorious. Mac mini is decent, but not as good value, considering the cost of these screens.

No T2 is great! That's a big advantage IMO.

as someone who long held the belief of "when you buy an Apple product, buy the most spec'd out, powerful version you can afford at that moment" - these spec updates confuse me. Do I really need an i9 or the graphics update? I do a lot of audio recording, editing (not music) and I'm using a 2011 27" I hacked fusion drive into years ago.. So tend to be a "drive it till the wheels fall off" kinda guy. But spec'd out these things are $4k+.. gulp.

Yep, I have to agree with your points.

I would be surprised if these new iMacs don't have throttling issues. The lack of T2 is unexpected. Maybe it's to keep prices down or due to problems they would cause sysadmin's in environments like education.

The iMac works out cheaper than the mini. With dram prices coming down fast I had hoped the SSD and ram upgrades would be much cheaper, they are a little bit but not enough to make much difference. The mini's 2TB upgrade price is the worst ripoff of them all iirc.

Can't wait to see the Geek-Bench scores for the new iMacs !
Will the 2017 i7 stay top of the mac single thread charts ;-)

Jesus...6Cores by default and 8 cores??? how will the fan noise and heat will be handled since is the same exact chassis that was designed 7 years ago!?
At least we have some info for the vega 48 how it compares to the former 580 and vega 20 from MBP 2018?!
[doublepost=1553004034][/doublepost]so if you want i5 9th gen, you have to go with the highest config, also for vega 48

Are we ready for throttle gate on the new iMacs, especially on the 27" top model? Also, why the heck there is no BTO option for i7 cpu?

AAANNNNDDDD.... HERE IS THE "MIND BLOWING" PRODUCTS FROM APPLE like Tim Apple said.. I'M TOTALLY IMPRESSED...

Better to wait for cinebench results.

I was going to replace the hdd inside my 2017 5K iMac with an ssd. Now, I'm going to wait and see how the new iMac will throttle and then decide but I'm frustrated.

I think both 6c i5 and that monstrous 8c i9 will heat this like hell
They really are that lazy at least to update the internals thermals

I was also expecting more TB3 ports, or at the very least a 10GBe port :(

Agreed.
Will wait to see what the reviews are like RE throttling and fan noise!

It's possible they updated the fan system to something closer to the one in the iMac Pros.

Or not.

We shall see.

---

The i5-8500 would have excellent performance without being overly loud with regular usage even with the old fan system though.

Do you think it’s worth buying now? I’m currently using a 2012 as my desktop and that 5K screen screams to me.

I can sorta see why people dont like the T2 but it has measurable advantages like performance penalty-less FileVault, and Touch ID

I couldn't care less about Touch ID on an iMac, but the T2 iMac Pro doesn't have Touch ID anyway.

Sure. A 6-core i5 27" iMac will be great performance wise and more than sufficient for most people. Depends on what you do.

However, if you want a new form factor, then you'll have to wait.

BTW, this update took 652 days to arrive.

But for Face ID.

They didn't bother to update the entry-level machine?

And they still sell it for the same price? What a farce.
This is one thing that does bother me about Apple now, it used to be that if they were going to continue selling a machine beyond a year with no update, they at least trimmed the price a bit. But overall at least the machines they did update are pretty nice updates, and no unreasonable price increases!
