Some of your reactions here are hilarious. Really? This is all that is keeping you from Windows? That seems quite drastic. Because you're a "professional."

What exactly are you using that this new Mac Pro won't hack? My Mac Pro 1,1 still can drive four displays. Are there even that many peripherals using Thunderbolt yet? What software are you using that is too slow for the new Mac Pro? .... that exists on Windows?

I'm sure a few of you have answers for that. I'm sure there are, like, a couple of you that have some actual job making video or something that needs MOAR SPEED now. If you're in that niche, is it really a Thunderbolt peripheral you need? How many PCs even have that?

Seriously, though... if you have $5,000 to throw at a computer, why not get the best mac you can get and then spend the $2,000 or whatever it would take to build an equivalent PC as your workstation (never, I'm sure, to be used for gaming).

I use a MacBook Air 4,2 for most of my work and an iPad for most things away from home or office and the old Mac Pro 1,1 to serve things up. I edit some video a couple of times a year and play with pictures every few months or so. And most of the time that stuff is usually work related.

Other than a bunch of people who think Apple "should" serve this alleged market—who are they?

Mac was the leading computer for "creative professionals" and "education" for many, many years. And those were the **** years. Becoming the mobile, user-end company that also has a toe in *regular* business usage on the desktop and a good grip on it in mobile has made the company successful.

Maybe you folks should have been buying the Power Mac G4 at the time instead of whining about it now.

really? You're going to do the ol' "deal with it" technique?

What about us MAYA users? After Effects and Cinema 4D users? What about us that run Cinema 4D rendering a 4K Global Illumination scene while Avid is exporting a 422 XDCAMHD file and I want to check my email?

WE NEED POWER. We are talking about 80 hours of a render or MORE, sometimes WEEKS. The extra power counts.

Don't scrutinize us that NEED this.

Windows HP new z800's get 16 cores, not to mention the new Zeons can support up to 4 CPUS

If Apple was DONE with the Mac Pro's why would they update them? I agree, its a lame update, hardly what I'd call an update at all, but if they were no longer interested in the Mac Pro line, don't you think it would make sense to say we are discontinuing them? I am holding out hope that there will be a major Mac Pro update, the 'Next Gen' Mac Pro, sometime this year.

It's way a cheap way of "keeping the Mac Pro" without eliminating it and ticking people off. Agree Epic FAIL on their part, but now you know why such a lame upgrade.

They invested ZERO dollars into this upgrade, yet they get to advertise NEW MODEL for another two years.

BWHAHAHAHAHA

Such a disappointment. Are benchmarks out yet?

Of course they are. The computer has been out since 2010. The only benchmarks that won't be out there is for the "new" top of the range 12 core 3.06 GHz, but you can find benchmarks for the same CPU in other systems, because it's been out since the 1st quarter of 2011.

Are you just trolling here? Doing a custom build of a new DP system spec'd out for video editing work (daily work, not as a hobby) with top-notch components runs up easily over $5k. Sure I could buy cheap components and shave up to a grand off of that, but in our industry, the computer is your revenue generating hardware. Buying the best means spending the money rather than cutting corners.

Add to that, the cost of the infrastructure. We have over $120k in XSAN storage. Repurposing the MDC hardware isn't an option if we're to switch to PC from Mac for editing. So that means about $30k in MDCs for a PC-based SAN controller, all new software on the server, plus all new software on the PCs. We'd be looking at about $30k for all of our software licenses. So, yeah, just switching to PC is about a $60k endeavor for us. And that just gets us to being able to add the workstations. 12 high-powered workstations will run us a minimum of $5k/seat. You do the math - $5k times 14.

Long story put short, that kind of a change takes time and a killer pitch.

Not even one single word about the other non-updated lines (iMac, mini) or this pathetic wanna-be update. Afraid of the customer reactions, Tim?

Guess over at Dell, HP, Microsoft et. al. they are popping the corks right now...

Another really sad thing is Microsoft's direction. Spend some serious time over at the Building Windows 8 blog site and see what their doing to reliable and easy to understand W7. Even ML's iOS, teenager-oriented stuff doesn't look as bad as Metro.

What a ****ing insult to anyone waiting to buy a new mac pro.
no thunderbolt. old usb. old video card. old sata.
It's obvious now that apple have thrown the mac pro under the bus.

No, they haven't. Dell and HP are only shipping now.

They can only ship once they have the chips and do serious testing first. The insinuation was that Apple could not possibly ship new Mac Pros because Intel didn't have the chips available. They did then, and that's why Dell and HP can now ship these systems.

With the poor reception that Windows 8 is getting on the desktop, even from seasoned and official fan boys, this would be a perfect opportunity for OSX to jump into the market and start doing real damage to the HP, Dells and Microsofts of this world. Instead we get new notifications, maps and organiser apps.

John C Dvorak is well known in the industry.

Odd, since the rest of the world thinks that Metro on the desktop is the worst idea MS has had since BOB. But anyway, I don't feel like getting into a Microsoft discussion.

What's all the complaining about. You can now get home if you're e lost, and talk to your iphone. Why would you want an actual computer anymore anyway.

i think we were all used to looking at the MP as being the one mac that rules them all. It is always the first to get the latest and greatest. Seeing it not get the latest goodies (usb3,sata3,pcie3,tbolt) that are now becoming standard in PCs has put our belief system into a state of shock. With two tbolt ports in the new macbook pro, Apple has bet all their marbles on thunderbolt im afraid.

So, will MP get updated with any of these new standards next time around? Depends on where the iMac goes. My guess is that this is their chance to drain MP supplies at a slight discount and finally discontinue the product.

In July or so, we'll see a new Retina iMac released with usb3 and maybe sata3. Then during back to school season, all the people that were not willing to fork over cash for a fancy imac will look at the new mac minis that come out in september.

Macbooks -> iMac -> Mac Mini

seems like a good release model, with a 2 month cadence, minimizing any chance of cannibalization of sales.

The only part I'm truly annoyed about is not upgrading the HDD bays to SATA III.

Well, the lack of TB and USB 3.0 ports is annoying too, but mainly out of laziness on my part.

If the new MacBooks all got USB 3.0, then that means native drivers will finally be available for OSX. I can install my own USB 3.0 ports for about $50.

Processor, graphics cards, RAM, HDDs and optical drives can all be done through OWC and others at much less cost.

My hope/plan for this 'refresh' was TB port, USB 3.0 ports and SATA III controllers, so I could buy the bare bones 12 core and upgrade everything else myself.

I'll probably just RAID 0 three SATA II SSDs with a 3TB HDD in the 4th bay for expanded storage and Time Machine/Carbon Copy backups. Bump RAM to 64GB (maybe 96GB), stick in a Blu-ray/DVD/CD drive or two, install USB 3.0 ports, update the graphics card...

Should do for a few years or more.

I agree with the above comments about Windows 8. The nice thing with Windows updates are that they are generally slow to be adopted and tend to be course corrected every other OS. So if lots of people hate metro they will (many are planning to) stick with Windows 7 for the forseable future (like people stuck to XP for years until vista was around). Changes will likely be made to iron out poor design and interface choices in windows 8. The clamor has already begun so I don't doubt a course correction will occur.

We just have to get use to using the computers for productivity and not worry about tons of new gadgets and features to be added to the OS. Like they say, 'there's an app for that'.

Is that correct? I'm looking at the Dell T7600s and T5600s and they're showing late-July ship dates for E5-2xxx configurations.

What a disappointment !

I've been waiting for 2 years for a Mac Pro update. I have 2007 and 2009 Mac Pros in a big photo studio - and my checkbook has been open and ready.

But, now it's closed.

I can't believe that there is no Thunderbolt or (most important for me) -- Pci Express 3.0. Same old 5770 graphics card- same memory.

This is the most basic "upgrade" possible ..... and leaves out all the peripheral connections available on an entry iMac.

I feel as though I have been punched in the gut ----- and I didn't see it coming.

Is there still a possible true upgrade when the 22nm Xeon chips come online? Or, is this the end of the line ....

I'm stunned - and dismayed today. I've been a power user of "Big" Macs since my first Mac IIfx - that cost $9,000 in 1991 ..... is it over now ?

My inner feelings tell me that Apple eventually will kill the Mac Pro and the Imac for just portable computing, and the new Macbook Pro just emphasizes that.

Just hope i can use a GTX 670 on my 2009 Mac Pro.

This is reportedly an email from Tim Cook to a disgruntled pro user:

Franz,

Thanks for your email. Our Pro customers like you are really important to us. Although we didn't have a chance to talk about a new Mac Pro at today's event, don't worry as we're working on something really great for later next year. We also updated the current model today.

We've been continuing to update Final Cut Pro X with revolutionary pro features like industry leading multi-cam support and we just updated Aperture with incredible new image adjustment features.

We also announced a MacBook Pro with a Retina Display that is a great solution for many pros.

Tim

Later NEXT YEAR. Like 2013 next year? Damn. Sure is hard to pop in motherboards and already made parts these day's. Freaking golden EFI.
Looks like we can continue to bitch for months? Thanks. So excited... This IS a real depressing GF experience.

Seems neither of the two "big players" in the OS (and partly hardware) market has new or at least good (or at the very least: usable) ideas anymore on how to go on.

Time for a really disruptive technology jump again - and maybe also some new player in the market who is better in sensing the needs and wishes of the users out there.

Or is it just me increasingly belonging to an outdated relic-ish minority with my ideas and demands and the mass of users are actually well-served by what either Apple or Microsoft can currently offer?
