Yes, massive design changes are imminent.

( On a more cautious day, however, I would say a minor spec bump with a range of new colours are 100% guaranteed )

I'm cautiously optimistic for a refresh. I have the late 2015 iMac and it's a nice machine, but if they were to release a re-designed model with a beefier GPU and/or TB3 ports for a external GPU, I'd consider upgrading...

The article could be referring to a redesigned product, which could make sense, as the display and iMac might share some of that new design. Especially if the new display contains a GPU. So a minor update could still be on the way Thursday.

I highly doubt we're going to get a minor update this week. To have it followed by a completely new model not even 8 months later would be counter productive in my opinion. And I'm praying that 'if' it does get delayed until 2017, that part of the reason is that its indeed being redesigned.

But I'm just referring to people here who are already deciding whether to jump ship based on a rumor. It's only four more until we see whether we're getting it this Thursday, or whether they announce a future date or not.

Maybe some quiet update on the 21". Drop the non retina 21" and fusion is standard on 4K retina with a chip update. 27" gets redo beginning 2017 and 21" redo next fall.

The iMacs already have skylake processors and desktop kaby lake processors aren't available yet so it makes sense for Apple to wait until they're available to update the iMac
This. There are no new processors for the 27". The 21.5" could go from broadwell to skylake I guess.

A very minor update dropping the price and adding fusion across the line would be nice, but basically, the chips aren't there to update the iMacs.

A year ago I was eagerly awaiting the announcement of the new 21.5" iMac with retina screen......and when the announcement finally came, the specs of the machine disappointed me and so I made the decision to buy a 15" rMBP instead. I have been very happy with this machine and the flexibility it offers me; I have the option to add any external monitor that I want, I have the SSD speediness that I wanted, and of course there is the portability. Overall, this has been a great experience and I don't miss my old 2012 iMac at all. I seriously doubt that I ever will buy another iMac, as by putting my rMBP on a stand and adding wireless peripherals (Magic trackpad 2, Magic Mouse, Magic keyboard) I have the "desktop experience" and yet by simply unplugging my rMBP I can easily take it anywhere, whether that be another room in my house, out on my deck, around town or out of town.......

Because my rMBP is not even a year old yet, I'll be watching Thursday's announcements with great interest but won't be lining up to buy a new rMBP this time around. I also have the rMB and so have experienced USB-C and I think that it is really very cool; as time goes on, especially with Apple bringing out their rMBPs with this, more third-party manufacturers will create new adapters and other devices which will work with USB-C and it will definitely eventually become mainstream.

If the iMac is delayed through next year, I won't be buying the current. Due to work, I may be forced to build a compatible machine on my own because I'm not wasting money on the 395x video card...as much as it will bring out anti-video card fanboys. The CPU is sufficient, but not worth buying the last card before a generational jump. At least with building my own, it'll be cheaper.

So, now the latest is that the new, updated iMac's will NOT be coming out this year, but early 2017. Anyone believe this?

I do if they are going to Kaby Lake as those CPUs will not be available until Q1 2017. AMD might also not be at high enough production of R9 4xx GPUs (which are widely expected to be used in the iMac and MacBook Pro).

I sure hope not, I have been holding off, like a lot of folks, waiting for updated machines but if nothing is released until early next year I will most likely pull the trigger on the 2015 model. Kind of a bummer if true.

Not directed at you, but people have been bitching on this thread for weeks about Apple not using Kaby Lake, so if they delay to do so and people then bitch about the delay... *rolleyes*

But the iMacs use laptop processors....

The 27" model does not. And the 21" model technically doesn't, either. It uses a specialized CPU/GPU package developed by Intel.

The larger does not: http://www.everymac.com/systems/by_year/macs-released-in-2015.html
The big holdup will likely be the Kaby Lake, and I've only heard of the mobile processors being delivered. I'm trying to find anything on the i7-7700k or lower which is what the kaby lake that could potentially be on the highest end iMacs...though I have my doubts given the 7700k is clocked faster than the 6700k and does not have a die shrink to deal with the power/heat.

I would be fine with a skylake and a much better video card for the 2016. I'd also be fine if I can upgrade my CPU after the fact, which has been done before. The key is I don't want to waste $ on today's current imac video card.

I will be surprised if there aren't new iMacs this week, because:
1) "hello again" to me hints at a pretty major release. And
2) Everywhere I go this weekend has hundreds of dollars off the entire range af Macs

I am not in the market for a Mac at the moment, but I am thinking I'll replace my Mac Pro with an iMac, Mac Mini, or MacBook Pro next year, so will watch with interest. There is such pent up demand for new Macs, I just hope they get things right this time.

I'm gonna laugh if they only show a new retina Macbook... I dunno how likely that is, but this is the new Apple, so...

Good thing I bought a new late '15 within the past few days.

It was already the newest Mac in the lineup so I'm not surprised.

They are waiting for Skylake which is smart. An update in October wouldn't have that many improvements.

The current iMac is still a great machine.

That's probably what they are holding up the airpod release for. So they can spend 30min of the 2hr keynote talking about airpods

It would be nice, but I think overall, there wasn't much they could do with the 27" iMac and from news about other things not being ready, it made sense to delay it.

Given the 21" iMac and its chipset, I think that delay will hurt apple. They're at a point where they need to keep innnovating and producing some great computers, but right now their entire line up is stale and consumers are not buying them.

Microsoft with its AIO coming out, is seeing a confluence of circumstances that may work in their favor, new design, fresh design for an AIO, and Apple, delaying its roll out

But the iMacs use laptop processors....
This has been a misconception for a long time. The confusion comes because they use laptop GPUs (when they have dedicated GPUs) and when they use a spinning hard drive, a 2.5 laptop one that tends to run at a slower rotation than a desktop equivalent. So the CPUs in the iMacs, especially the 27" have been top notch and the performance of the graphics processor, tends to lag a generation or two behind a traditional desktop equivalent. And since moving to solid state drives, and especially NVRAM for storage, there is an actual performance advantage over many other offerings.

The rumored Surface AIO is intriguing. Microsoft is not bad with hardware at all. The Surface Book for example, looks really nice with its 3:2 screen; weird hinge and all.

I'd really rather not buy a Windows machine though. But with rumors like a GTX 1080 in it, one has to keep an open mind.

This would be hilarious because the title of the event is "hello again" which is a direct reference to older mac and iMac events. It would be like referencing the iPhone event from 2007 in a few years and releasing no iPhones or info.

I hope they get rid of that 2.5" 5400 RPM drive in the 21.5". It's THE bottleneck for acceptable desktop performance... or just make a fusion drive (or hybrid drive) standard. Seagate (Apple's supplier) just released a 1 or 2 TB drive with 8 GB flash for approx 110 USD ASP.

Not doing any update to the iMac line-up would be ridiculous. Makes you wonder what all those Apple engineers are doing these days.

The Mac Pro is 4 years old
The Mac Mini same story
The iMac got some changes last year (CPUs and GPUs, NMVE, displays with enhanced gamut), but we're all waiting for those new AMD GPUs and 100% SSDs.
