Even if Intel don't have another chip ready i'm sure Nvidia/AMD have new graphics , or SSD's have dropped in price so they can put bigger in for the same price, or RAM can be increased, or WiFi/Bluetooth standards will have been improved.
But Apple can't upgrade things constantly. Really in the iMac's case it's maximum one per year. If they update it now but keep Skylake, we'll be in the same situation in another year or 18 months' time - everyone bursting for a new iMac but Cannonlake not ready, and they will ship Kaby Lake just as it's old news.

I'd like to see Apple go along with Intel's schedule and put the latest processors in ASAP. It's embarrassing how long Apple pumps out Macs with chips two generations old.

They're damned if they do, and damned if they don't.

I think they could revamp the 21" significantly, since that's on broadwell, and an iGPU. They could also move towards the USB-C/TB3 ports and standardize on SSDs

As for the 27" they could keep skylake but offer better dGPUs that everyone is lusting after.

Poor Apple :p

I say wait for Kaby Lake.

Apple will have insider info regarding Kaby Lake dates. If it's soon, announce iMacs today to start shipping by Christmas (Osborne effect shouldn't be too damaging - they did the exact same in 2012 AFAIK).

If it's not soon, hold out for a while.

The 21" is a shame, as you say, but perhaps if you're springing for the smaller model horsepower isn't your priority anyway? Spinning disks though... *vomits*

If they announce new iMacs today still running Skylake it's going to be very hard for me to get excited about upgrading when I've been running a Skylake i7 in my iMac for the last year.

For people almost demanding an update today - what are you pining for? The only thing wrong with the 2015 27" iMac is that it's been out for a while. It's still got the fastest CPUs Apple can put into it. The graphics aren't great but the thermal constraints mean an iMac is always going to be somewhat crippled in that regard. And we're not expecting a new form factor. So if Apple announced a new 27" iMac today, it will surely either have the same CPUs (boo!), or not be available for a few months.

I still think the Surface Studio is a niche product. Not everyone wants to be a graphic design artist. For those who want to dabble there is the iPad Pro for much less $$$.

Feeling much the same. Yesterday I was blown away by the Studio but I think that was mostly shock/surprise. Hopefully it makes Apple try harder on the Mac though - it's certainly due a new ID.

So a better GPU but still Skylake would still be something better in terms of thermo?
