I wonder how many non-forum/non technical people will have real issues when 14 gets installed on their screens and they can't understand/find things or can't make their phones look as they are used to and like.
Unlike normal I hope Apple puts out some training materials for this release

Well, the widget page ("today page") has changed... and the App Library has been added AFTER the last home screen page... but the home screen itself has not changed "out of the box". The "non-forum/non technical people" won't see a difference... For them, it will largely be "business as usual".

I can't understand the hate about the new homescreen design.

It's like android now. You have your startpage/homescreen where you can put your most used apps and/or widgets. And then you have the app library which works like the app drawer/launcher on android.

Of course, when pretty much nothing had changed on the homescreen since iphoneOS 1, it's unfamiliar. But it makes sense. And goddamn it was time for the homescreen to see a refresh. I was hoping for a complete redesign, a completely new experience. but I'm happy to finally see some changes and not staring another year on the same boring grid of apps.

I hope lockscreen and/or notification center is next.

THIS 100%, ever since the first iPhone release, we've had the same boring user interface, don't know why people are complaining, they don't have to use widgets if they don't want to, they can still keep the boring grid app layout from 2007.

That's great - I just don't want to deal with my wife if her phone has "changed" and she has issues doing stuff.

The widgets are overrated. I didn’t like them on android and I don’t like them here. I just have the calendar and the reminders widget but I’m not sure I really want it there. The dynamic widget info isn’t helpful for me.

I love the PIP though. That’s really neat. And the app list is nice. Beats having so many folders.

I think making widgets aligned to the icon grid solely was a lazy and sloppy decision

If they wanted true customization they should’ve given free reign like Dashboard on Mac before that went away, in addition to overlay ability and transparency , and dynamic resizing not just small and big classes of widgets

makes me wonder, if dashboard went away so iOS 14 with widgets could feel artificially fresh and for iOS ification design of Big Sur. They teed it up

The icons themselves need an overhaul even if minor tweaking

they simply feel outdated and stale 7 OS’es later and without Ive at the design wheel no less

it’s time for some form of a new design language imo

we went from skeuomorphic detail and texture and realism overload to bare minimum minimalism. Surely there’s more tricks in the ole hat than those two extremities

I like the new layout on my ipad, the only device running ios 14. Think apple did a good job and for those who aren't interested, keep the same layout as before. Win/win.

Didn’t see enough on iPadOS 14 to install it.

Loving iOS 14 on my iPhone though.

What new layout? There is no new layout on iPados 14...

You might never get to try app library on a iPad since it’s not even there. 😂🥺

Looks like iOS got all the love this year, iPadOS got a very lackluster update this year.
It's still early in the beta cycle and we don't know where this will be headed. Hoping beta 3 comes out this week. I decided I would install ios 14 on my iphone towards the end of July.

running iOS 14 public beta on my daily xs max no issues at al, you won’t want to go back to iOS 13 once you use iOS 14.

make sure you‘ve backed up your phone before installing the beta.

I really like ios 14 on my ipad, and am surprised of the smoothness.

As far as the bolded, absolutely and a good reminder.

I would not count on widgets getting any more functionality in later betas. Their lack of interactivity is a result of how they are set up. They are written in Swift and are designed essentially as mini static webpages that refresh over time. Think of them like the complications in an Apple Watch. You can click them and get to an app, but mostly they are designed to display glanceable information.

This is not to say that Apple might not expand on that functionality in iOS 15 or beyond, but I would say its unlikely this year since Developers are already working with the current API.

Seeing as at WWDC they never once said anything about App Library being on the iPad, it won’t change in beta. Maybe in a later iPadOS release, like 15.
