This is bittersweet. While I'm glad that the Classic wasn't killed off today, I was at least hoping for an OS refresh akin to the 4G and 5G Nanos. At least I can still use the thing when I eventually buy a replacement - it's the only iPod now that runs on Tiger and iTunes 9 (I really hate the traffic lights, and since I use the graphite theme, it's going to look stupid. I don't care for Ping either.)

Oh well, at least I won't have to rush out and buy one now. =)

Honestly what's more to update on the regular ipod. Frankly it looks antiquated these days. It has had its run but time to shoot it LOL. There's only so much you can do with a square screen and a clickwheel. I rare ever see regular ipods anymore. Mostly iphones, touches, nano. Sometimes a shuffle.

Honestly, there's just isn't a market for 120gb of music when 99% of the population can make do with 16gigs. Hell, 64 with just music is overkill. And yes, there's which 1% of the buying audience needs an iPod for but again, no little profit to that.

If anything I'm sure there's an mp3 manufacturer out there who still wants to hold on to the old way of interfacing with their music so that's aways an option.

There are tons of ways to improve it.

Bigger storage, wifi, BT, built in Nike+, hd radio, the list goes on and on.

There always things to improve that some people can come up with, but who's gonna buy it and what are the profit margins. I read somewhere that Apple manages their development teams like a start up company, where it is a small number of teams and everyone has a hand in their products. One team would work on the ipod touch, and after a project they may get moved to the ipad, then the iphone etc... THere's only so many hats to work on a project, and when your money maker are iphone, touch, and ipod nanos, then macbooks, imacs, pros, there's only so much talent to go around. Hell, there's even the believe that i've heard discussed on tech podcast that apple's osx release dates is being effected by the number of projects they are working on. Now you have the appleTV that is revamped which is a potential money maker for apple that deserve the attention of engineers and programmers.

Plus, let's not forget how profitable the touch devices, where you can not only purchase songs ala ipod classic, but also games, apps, services, etc...

I am just hoping their never comes a day when apple stops making the "computer" as we know it. That is truly going to be a sad day for me!!!!

Anyway, its interesting where apple has come, from the hight in the 80s, to the lows in the 1990s. And their rise with the iMac, then the Ipod. Hell I remember buying my first 3g ipod with the touch wheel and 4 buttons in 2003 I think. Damn they truly have gone far!

Suck It, Jobs

I made do with my 120GB 6G Classic for the past year thinking we'd get at least a bit more drive space today. Can't believe I'm entertaining the notion of spending $250 to get a 40GB bump, but I have 37,000 songs (160GB) in my iTunes library, some purchased from iTunes, but most legally ripped from CDs in my collection. This was going to be the year I upgraded many of them from 128 kpbs to a more listenable 256, but that'll mean having to make the choice of what 50% of my collection I have to leave sitting on my computer.

Of those 37,000 songs, I only have 800 that I haven't listened to at least once, and more than 1,000 that I've listened to more than 50 times. 10,000 songs sit in the range of 10-49 plays. I love my music, and the joy of owning an iPod Classic was being able to have my entire library at my fingertips. Having tasted this, it's impossible to go back to the pre-digital notion of having to pick and choose what goes into my pocket.

What's the point of having higher bitrates or lossless if you stop offering a storage option to make high-quality music portable? I realize Apple has to cater to the masses and not to a minority of its customer base, but this would have been an easy upgrade to appease its long-term and probably most dedicated customers. I've purchased 6 iPods and two iPhones since 2004; for the second year in a row, the September music event has left me cold. Peddle your apps elsewhere, Stevie. Some of us still want to listen to music.

Just wanted to add my voice. I was also hoping for a device aimed mainly at listening to music with a decent storage. I've got a 31GB iTunes library squeezed into a 30GB 5th gen iPod that's served me just fine since 2007, it's the only iPod i've ever had. I was looking forward to the possibility of maybe a 64GB flash memory-based Classic with an FM tuner, or if not that, at least a price drop on the current one.

Anyway, I'm buying an iMac tomorrow at my campus store, I guess I'll just go ahead and get the Classic as is. Some day I do want an iPhone or an iTouch, but I just can't afford anything that'll have enough storage for my library.

The classic was the only one I cared about. I was in the apple store a month ago and one of the employees said the classic isn't selling as well as it did and the future is def in the touch screen. Either way now I feel better about buying the classic. I need the space.

Would it be possible to swap out a classic hdd for a third party one? I could really use at least 200GB space for all my music and movies and I know toshiba sells a 240GB 1.8" drive. Also I guess Apple will likely discontinue the classic before upgrading the storage capacity.

Yes u can swap out the drive for a bigger one.

The click wheel is going the way of the Dodo.

By next year, the iPod touch will have 128GB that may eliminate the classic and the iPod nano will eliminate the shuffle. Then we are left with two iPod lineups.

For any old schoolers who need need that "click" (tactile feedback) when it is in your pocket, get the iPod classic or any previous gen nanos before they discontinue them all brand new. I feel sad for the classic line. I remember being at the Apple Store over a month ago and I was the only one playing with the iPod classic. There were just two placed in this corner section. It is the one that started it all and now is one of the most neglected next to the shuffle. Dying breed. Apple clearly wants to move everything to touch. And since Apple is so obsessed with design, I think they ran out of ideas on how to change up the classic.

I love my classic... spinning it right now... but let's face it, Apple would rather sell you a Touch so that you can spend money at the app store, and buy music right on the device. they have no interest in selling you a classic that you will load up with your own ripped CDs or pirate bay downloads.

I'm a huge iPod fan and basically buy a new one every year (Classic, nano, touch), and yesterday left me cold. Nothing to see here... probably the weakest iPod lineup ever, IMO.

iPod classic is cool to leave hidden away in your car if you have an iPod interface in it. That way your car has your entire library always ready to play.

Also, the space is great because with the extra 80 GB you don't use or something you can make an encrypted disk image and store precious photos and whatnot, dump it on there. That way, since the classic is not with all your other stuff, it's a extra little backup set away.

Ok, that is probably not a common use.

I fall into the disappointed category too. My music collection is well beyond the 160 GB capacity of my classic and I too was anticipating a bump in storage. My battery doesn't hold the charge for nearly as long as when it was new.

I would have been okay had they used the Lala acquisition to allow us to bring our entire music collection to the cloud and provide for a seamless way to have a portion of that always available on the ipod. I'd be happy to sync playlists from the cloud as needed.

I can't tell you the number of times where I've realized the artist isn't on the 160gig classic simply because there is not enough space.

I have no pictures, no contacts, no video and would have no rooms for games or apps had that capability been available.

I love the Classic. Lots of people say it's useless because no one has 160GB of music, but hello, what about video?

If I had the 160GB classic, I know I'd certainly have all the TV and Movies I've bought off iTunes on there and that'd fill it a lot quicker than music.

That is exactly how I use my Classic. Have a bunch (100GB) of music and podcasts shows in there, so it pretty much stays in the cars glove box.

Are you able to upgrade the HD in a classic to over 160GB? I know places like RapidRepair.com have 240GB upgrades for the 5th Gen iPod's (like I have) but I don't know about the iPod Classic's. I do know that taking apart an iPod Classic is VERY difficult without damaging the components however.

I've got an iPhone, so why would I want to pay big bucks for an iPod Touch with a bunch of features that I already have? What I DON'T have is a lot of space for my 100+ GB of music, and that's growing as I re-rip my CD's to higher bps. I'm another that wants a Classic as well as my iPhone. If they weren't going to up the features, they could at least have dropped the price a bit.

My biggest gripe is there isn't an alternative to hold videos. I order TV shows from iTunes all the time and 64GB is pretty pathetic let alone 16GB. I upgraded my 5th gen to 240GB and it seems to be working out well for me.

Since Apple hasn't upgraded the nano capacity in 2 years I'm forced to go with an alternative. I ordered a Sansa Fuze+ to fill the need for more space on a mp3 player. [We will see how that goes since I have such a established iTunes library, 5+ years worth..its gonna be a PITA to start another]

File sizes will continue to increase, yet apple isn't keeping up with it anymore. Though to be fair I'm sure since there is no competition in the hard drive market [specifically Zune], there is no incentive to continue upgrading the classic. Only reason the 4th gen even got 16GB was because of the Zune, now we are SOL for capacity upgrades there too.

Its pretty sad when the CEO says "All iPods getting upgrades" and he himself doesn't even consider the iPod Classic as a iPod anymore.

Too bad it ain't got updated but since I got an awesome deal I'm going to get one:D My library is not very big (about 50gigs with tv shows included).
A hdd bump was a great thing or a longer lasting battery. Or a price drop.
I really need the tactile controls, it's a very bad idea taking you ipod out to change songs when your on the subway (unless you want to ipod less)

was just looking at the ipod classic page in the apple store
the promo pic under the options to buy has an album cover from an album that was released may 2010
dont they usually just keep the same promo photos up from when the product is introduced?

yeah man, the only upgrade the classic got was the picture on it's screen on the website.

At least it is still on the web site. After Jobs ignored it the other day I feared the classic was going to disappear for ever.

It might not have been updated but it's good to know it's still an option if you need the extra capacity.
