If there was an iPod Touch at 128GB with Wifi, cameras, facetime, apps, touch screen and all that Jazz for $399, I'd love it if they could also offer a simple iPod Classic with the same storage for $279 or something. I'd like them to improve the aesthetics of the Classic while there at it, its edges are too soft and curved, Apple's other products have made a bit of a shift to harder corners and straighter edges. Does flash memory drain batteries less than a hard drive?

i think the reason it didn't see any updates was for 2 reasons. They are about to axe it next yr when the touch reaches 128gb of space. then the classic will be dead. 2nd reason being it is called the ipod classic. If it is a classic why change it?

i've always toyed with the idea of getting a touch and after my 5g 30 gig died a couple of months ago it became more tempting, but there are two reasons that i haven't went for it:
- no click wheel (it's nice to be able to skip a song when the ipod is still in your pocket)
- tiny memory (in comparison to the classic)

i was always having to switch what was on my ipod at least every week then when it packed in i thought that i would hold out until september so i could get the newer one with a bigger memory (i was hoping for around 240 gigs) so i was very disappointed to find out that it hasn't been updated

i have close to 220 gigs of music in my itunes library, and thats only about 1/2 of my cd collection in there.

I hope they dont do away with the classic, as I like being able to carry almost all of my music around with me.

My iTunes library is 2200GB. Apple Lossless files eat the iPod Classic for breakfast.

There aren't many hdd audio players left. Looks like it's grab em' while you can.. If I had the money instead of one I would buy 2 of them. People with libraries topping 100gb and many more are screwed:mad:

RIP iPod classic... so when will we see a 100+ GB iPod (flash) with an affordable price tag... 2020-never?

My first iPod was a 3rd-gen 40GB in 2004. It took me three years, but I eventually outgrew it. In 2007, I bought a 6th-gen 160GB iPod classic. Held all my music, all my podcasts, all my iTunes U, and even had space left for an entire TV series (hello, West Wing!)

In 2008, I bought a 16GB iPhone 3G. Such small storage, I used it for a little video, but no music. In 2009, I bought a 32GB iPhone 3GS. I put my favorite music on, about 12GB's worth, and used the rest for videos.

I recently got tired of carrying around an iPhone and an iPod everywhere. I went through iTunes and deleted some stuff I haven't listened to (since 2005 when I started using iTunes!) or that I didn't want anymore. I enabled the "Convert to 128kbps" on my iPhone, and I can fit all my music on it. With room left to spare for apps, pictures, a couple video podcasts, and a couple movies.

I never thought I'd fill 160GB. But I did pretty easily. But with 750GB+ of movies and TV shows, no iPod will store everything I have. My priorities are adjusting. I'd really rather have my iPhone than my iPhone and classic (small screen, no good for widescreen videos).

I know I could be happy with a 64GB iPhone. All my music, a few more podcasts, and a couple more movies, and maybe a season of a TV show. The click wheel will be missed, but navigation (and search) are far, far better on the iPhone than the iPod. Having to turn on the screen to skip a track or rate a song is a pain, but at least I'm only carrying one device (and it does EVERYTHING.) Playlist creation/editing/deleting in iOS4 is pretty sweet, too.

Also, I don't know why, but I pulled out my 3rd-gen this weekend and loaded my music on it. So I've got two iPods full of music (and video) and I've no idea what I'll do with them. They are worth practically nothing, and while I want to hold onto the classic for it's sheer storage space for video, I can't see myself watching videos on it ever again. It's hard to believe I ever did, actually...

The thing that really gets me is:

I've come to accept that the necessity for a Classic refresh wasn't overwhelming but that its exclusion from the event was just a shame. I don't think it will be discontinued for a while yet, it's a device that sells itself. In a sort of pseudo-psychological retail observation I would say they'll silently keep it there for one or two more years (possibly not continuing to sell it directly) because it is a symbol of apple's emerging presence in the music and entertainment industry over the last decade. Big companies often maintain a core product that requires no new innovation, advertising costs etc because it has a strong and steady following. There is simply no comparable mp3 player out there at the moment and although sales have been dropping it could always be a first reference point for someone who needs a) large portable storage with no unnecessary add-ons b) strong battery performance c) a recognised product and brand in the music field.

You are missing something. Hard disk drives will be always cheaper.

When 128GB flash iPod touch will be available for 399$, 1,8" HDD will be around 100$ for 320GB.

When 256GB iPod touch will be available for 399$, 1,8" HDD will be around 100$ for 640GB.

......

At the moment there is Toshiba 1,8" 320GB drive for around 200$ (too much for Apple because classic would be then again 350$).

Besides quality of music will most likely become better and better and will demand more and more space.

Pretty much the same scenario as in the beginning in 2001.

SRY for bad english.

Thanks:) Let's see if my classic likes 320 VBR AAC :p If it lasts more than 30 hours I'm a happy camper:D I hope that changing song frequently won't drain it's battery too bad:p

Which model classic do you own?

I've got the original 'fat' 160GB which has a bigger battery than the current model. 40+ hours is nothing special, though I'm pleased it can still manage it after 3 years of heavy use.

In audio, it exceeded Apple’s claims by a wide margin, playing our test tracks for 58 hours and 14 minutes

I will be the proud (I hope) owner of a slim 160gb ipod classic. (Still waiting for it to arrive) So I will not have that big battery life:(

Edit: My biggest problem with the classic is that I had a nice sony mp3 player that the battery lasted almost for ever, and it was super fast, no ipod was that fast.
But it broke, and after dealing with sony support and after various different models and problems I got my money back and gave up on sony.
Kinda afraid on battery life because I owned a 2Gen nano and battery life sucked a lot..

I have a phone and I now have an iPad. Why would I need to spend the money on a Touch? Doesn't the iPhone do everything a Touch does, and more? I must be missing something obvious.

Yeah, but I was responding to the folks saying that the iPod Classic is dead because everyone will buy a Touch. I never understood why anyone would buy a Touch.

But I'm just mad that my iPod 5th Gen wont play on my pretty new iPod speakers so I may have to buy a new iPod classic and you'all are saying that the Classic is going to be discontinued or something.

And to answer the next question, the most important factors in favor of the Classic, to me that is, is that I can raise/lower the volume and skip ahead songs while the iPod is in my coat pocket, and I don't have to enter a password to get into the library. I carried a Touch for a while, and this drove me nuts.

iPod Classic = Ford Crown Victoria.

It's the best at what it does, in a fairly small, not-so-profitable market segment, and you can't really go anywhere else for a similar product. If this analogy holds, Apple will drag the death of the classic out for YEARS. I think I first heard about the phasing out of the Crown Vic back in 1999 or so, and it's STILL around, although just barely.

Good analogy. It still blows my mind that they said all ipods get updated and never mention the classic.

What speakers are these that doesn't work with the older 5th gen?
