That is exactly how I use my Classic. Have a bunch (100GB) of music and podcasts shows in there, so it pretty much stays in the cars glove box.

Mine too. My Classic plugs in in the glove box and I control everything in my Pioneers touch screen. I actually have two Classics, the 160GB for videos and the 120GB for music. I can watch the videos on my car decks screen. I'll get another Classic soon just to have as a spare soon.

At least it is still on the web site. After Jobs ignored it the other day I feared the classic was going to disappear for ever.

It might not have been updated but it's good to know it's still an option if you need the extra capacity.

My beef with the current classic is that I couldn't get rid of the damn split screen and album covers flashing on the side. That was about 8 months ago so I returned it. The click wheel also seemed to no be very responsive and that is a common complaint. Has anything changed since then in terms of firmware to address these 2 issues of mine?

yeah man, the only upgrade the classic got was the picture on it's screen on the website.

why would they switch the picture?
dont they usually just keep the original promo photos up until the product gets updated?

I think the iPod Classic will stick around until they can make an iPod touch that exceeds 100GB.

The other option is that the iPod Classic will stick around until they sell through all of the inventory. I tend to think this isn't likely because they haven't put them on sale or in the refurb store.

Regardless, I expect we'll be hearing some clarification on this by the end of the week.

Oh - and for the past two years now I've predicted the demise of the iPod Classic. So far I'm 0 for 2.

The Classic has been in the reburb store for a long time. I just bought a 160GB refurb classic last week, and I couldn't be happier. I outgrew my 80GB Classic some time ago, so it's great to carry my whole music collection with me once again.

It doesn't need any new features or interface tweaks. The only "improvement" that would have been nice would be a cheaper price.

I get the feeling that the only reason it's still around is because Apple hasn't bumped the capacity of anything else.

I was a little disappointed in the lack of a refresh for the Brick, too. My 30GB just finally died on me - I'm replacing it now for fear that the Brick will be discontinued soon! >.< I seem to be in the minority, but I cannot STAND the other iPods - they simply don't store enough for me to think them worthwhile.

Well actually, they could at least put some incredible superior audio decoder in it, fm tuner and a 5$ speaker so it would have been all about music...but this way i think it's a rip off as long as they don't reduce the price! i dont think its too much to ask for...

I love my iPod Touch for games, mobile internet, and apps, but man, for music, the Classic is my go to. It's where ALL my music is (not just the 200 songs or so that fit after all the apps and pictures are on there). It's also where all my pictures and videos are as well.

I NEED the click wheel when I'm doing something else and listening to music. If I'm cutting my grass, on the elliptical, dusting, falling asleep to music, or even studying I don't want to have to look at a screen to touch the right spot to skip a song. Please don't ditch the click wheel. I love my iPods and I love iTunes and the intense control it gives me over my music collection, but if the click wheel is discontinued, my next mp3 player will not be an iPod.

I think the Classic is pretty darn close to perfect as it is. I would have liked to have seen an HD radio or at least an FM tuner added. A speaker would have been nice. I see no need for a camera, and I definitely wouldn't want to see it run iOS. I could see it getting a wifi chip to run simple apps, like weather or a calculator (it already has a good calendar, to do list, contacts, and some fun games).

Apple will eventually kill the Classic (soon.) Prepare for it.

Time to put that tech out to pasture, anyway.

Not going to happen.

I'm never one to just come out and say X or Y is going to happen like a lot of people on here do with absolutely no proof or sources. However, I just can't see this happening, and I don't think it will anytime soon.

A little more HD space would be useful but that's it really.

Surely a retina display of it's own and a software update wouldn't go a miss, maybe solid state drives?

I was honestly depressed when Apple left out the classic.
I guess this does mean I don't have to pay for a new one anytime soon..

Flash Drive

Is there a possibility that when 128 GB flash drive is more affordable, the iPod Classic will receive that memory, receive a slimmer redesign and stay on the market with the clickwheel?

They haven't even acknowledged that the classic exists in the last two events, silent upgrade last year and no upgrade this year.

As soon as the touch is hitting 128GB I think the classic is going to be laid to rest. Apple is in the business to make money, for them it makes absolute sense to kill off the iPod Classic because they do not make much money off of videos or music. They make the most money selling apps.

I don't get the sales though apple acts like its the worst selling model yet EVERYTIME I look at the top selling mp3 players on Amazon its always right behind the touch.

Yep I agree it's not about music it's about apps. Steve wants developers, now musicians are getting the dark corner.

Since the classic it's pretty big they could try to fit flash chips in a ratio that maintained the price = no more waiting for the hdd to spin up.
Anyway I'm waiting for the classic to be delivered (had to buy it, before it gets killed:().
The touch would suffice with the measly 32gb but has way to stuff to distract me, I just want to listen to music not to fail at uni:p

Thats the point of classic.... Classic is meant to be looking old... why have updates if it will make the ipod classic look newer... It just kills the whole classic part

At least it doesn't ruin the back to school program:D The only things that should be classic is the form factor and the interface. The rest could pretty much be updated. Unless apple has a ton of classics in stock

I'm pretty sure the classic got discontinued. After all, when you realistically think about it, how many people actually have a classic? It's just not the popular thing anymore, so apple decided to cut their losses and get rid of it. Honestly, it's a good move in my opinion.
