I have a new 17inch core 2 duo on the way to replace my G5 iMac that Apple has been trying to fix three times over the last four months.

So buy a copy

So the new iMacs don't come with Quicken? That sucks, for once I was actually thinking about switching back to it... oh well.

Even if it comes with a PC you still have to purchase it to get to all the features and to use it beyound 60 or 90 days...

So support Mac software and buy a copy... or perhaps there are program alternatives...

A question for all you 24"ers-

Is it "too big?" Does it take up too much room on your desk? Is it uncomfortable sitting in front of that thing all day?

I (currently) have a small desk, so am a little worried about having a 24" being "right in front of my face"- so I dunno if I want to go 24" or 20". aaaargh!

Up till Core 2 Duo I'm pretty sure it came with a full copy of Quicken... I remember seeing that on Apple's website before the Core 2 Duos came out. I know my iBook came with a full copy of Quicken.

Quicken for the Mac falls under the category of "would use if it came with the computer but would never pay for." The 2004 version was terrible. I just wanted to see if it was any better.

I don't know, I know my 20" looks freakin' huge on my desk. I actually double checked the box to make sure they had sent the right size.

Cut out a piece of cardboard in the same size as the imac. Draw in the space where the screen would be at it's exact size. Hold it in front of you on your desk. See if it seems too big. End of dilemma.

im pretty mad... i ordered mine on the 6th, the original ship time was the 12th, it got pushed back to the 19th... so i emailed apple and they said they literally ran out of parts to build the imac... apparently everyone did what I did and waited till the imacs where to update, and apple got overwhelmed with orders... too bad, its a good reason tho that the delay is taking this long... nice to know that they actually build your computer when you order it...

EDIT: did anyone get this shipping delay that lives in the Toronto area?

A general question for 24" owners. How's the fan noise?
Finally saw one. The 24" is DEAD SILENT. I could not hear the slightest whisper with my ear on the rear vent. I could feel air moving, but hear nothing. Now, in a quiet room instead of a store, there may have been some sound. But not much. Even when I ran a full-screen Flash anim (which usually makes my PBG4 fans crank up to 11).

It's hard to tell if my old LCD has just deteriorated over time (is that possible?) or the new iMac screen is THAT much better?
Probably a bit of both. LCD lamps can get dimmer over time.

That's a personal call. It looked BIG to me, and I loved it :) But it won't really waste desk space: iMacs float above your desk. And it's not any closer to your face than other iMacs.

Really, it's the optional 7600 GPU that has me half-sold. (It's that or a Mac Pro.)

Obviously I could have done that by now, but staring at a peice of card board is VERY different than working in front of a computer all day. It's not a matter of desk space as it is a matter of comfort. I am also asking for an opinion- that doesn't help me at all.

FYI, the dimensions of the viewable screen on the 24":

20.35" wide x
12.72" tall

Also, the DPI is slightly lower than other Apple displays (slightly larger pixels) which make it easier to read, for my eyes.

Ok, no one beat me with a stick for asking this. I'm not a newb, I've searched, I swear. Since I couldn't find the answer I figured I'd ask it where all of you new iMac owners are congregating.

Has anyone with the x1600 card tried Civ 4 yet? If so, thoughts? Does it run well?

More on topic, I went to the Apple store and was looking into what specs I could get (past the baseline) on a 20 incher. I almost crapped my pants when the salesman told me 2 Gigs of RAM would run 600 American dollars. This is an upgrade that costs $175 BTO. The guy explained to me that this was the result of having two leftover sticks of 512 after the upgrade and that the new RAM was guaranteed to work. He then suggested that I buy Crucial RAM. It was pretty funny that an Apple salesperson would suggest such a thing.

Anyway, I walked out realizing that for $600 I could buy two sets of RAM (four 1 Gig sticks) from other sources that would all be lifetime guaranteed. Not that I could use that much, but you get my point.

In conclusion, I'll be ordering one online very soon. :)

Thanks nagromme,

I have been trying to find out this forrver. I took my tape meausure out and compared it to the crapy Dell 17" CTR I am using at work and its is so huge.

You dont happen to have the dimmensions for screen on the 20"? As much as I can I lust for a 24 incher, I might have to settle with the 20", who knows what they will charge for it here.

Nope...

my older LCD (got it in '03) just seemed very "pink" compared to the new one.

Oh, ok. I wasn't trying to be a wiseguy or anything but I guess you see where I was going with that. Nicotine buildup. I've seen it happen to computer users who are heavy smokers.

17"x10.6"

Brought to you by Pythagoras and the letters A, B, and C :)

Is there a particular reason why you ordered from B&H rather than direct from Apple? Cheaper? Better warranty included? Just wondering.

It was I think $137 less to buy from B&H. Not a huge savings, but every penny counts, especially since this was kind of an impulse buy. I AM nervous buying from a 3rd party, but so far so good. It shipped and is expected by Monday the 18th. I got it stock (i'll upgrade the ram myself later, the rest of the stock options are fine for me) and added applecare, so I hope it wasn't a stupid thing to do.

Just received my 24" from Fedex and I am very impressed. This imac is HUGE!! It is a little "in your face" but Im sure I will get used to it. I had a 20" Imac a year ago and from memory, it seems almost tiny compared to the 24. I recently sold a 20" acd to help pay for this and the brightness difference is quite apparent. I am using the lowest setting on the 24" and that is still brighter than the medium level that I used on the ACD. I am currently installing windows so that I can play Madden 07 and will post more impressions later.

I am a newb so not a civ4 expert:)
I've just got a c2d imac, standard 128Mb x1600 video card, and i've been playing civ4 happily on it. I haven't got up to big battles yet, so I don't know if it would slow down then, but it runs very smoothly so far.
The only thing I've seen is in the initial sequence when it pans at the end the video is a little choppy, only for an instant though.
I couldn't wait for a CTO, too excited. Plus I'm not really a big gamer.

If it makes you feel any better, I have known people who hace bought rather expensive camera gear from B&H, and they have made out fine.

Thanks for the info. What are your graphics settings for the game?

Ditto. I bought a Nikon CoolScan from B&H. It was less expensive than other online stores and ordering/shipping/service was just dandy.

although I just ordered a 20" iMac from MacMall, one of my favorite catalog/online stores. I've ordered tons of stuff from Macwarehouse (CDW), MacMall, and MacZones over the years and all are superb.

Hi,

Does anyone know if there is an optimal sitting distance from the screen of the 24"? When you buy a TV, the manual always reccomends sitting a certain distance from the TV, maybe to prevent eye problems, I don't know... any idea if this exists for the imac?

Thanks!

I so wish i could make a post on here saying that my iMac has arrived. But alas, I am just a poor college student with no money, whilst stuck with a crappy windows PC. :( . If only I'd discovered applemacs last year before i bought this shitheap of a computer.
