Greetings, one and all.
Ex-musician. Well, still a musician, really, but no longer physically capable of playing rock band gigs...
Been using DOS/Windows since IBM AT/286. That's a lot of Windows. At age 69, I have my first Mac.
What did I choose?
A 2007 Mac Pro 2.1.
Glutton for punishment, or what?
Today was my first day tinkering. Managed to get the OS transferred to an SSD, which sped things up a bit, but not as much as it would have on a similar age Windows box. Whatever. It's a beautifully built thing, but oh my, doesn't the RAM get hot? So hot that after 30 minutes, it goes from 16GB to 12...

Anyhow, I'm going to be here quite a lot!
Thanks for listening!

This will be a bit of a test... Another of these threads started with good intentions... but was soon taken over by regulars.

if you just joined MacRumors, reply and introduce yourself.

This is only for new Macrumors users... only users who registered within two months of the current date may reply...

All other users posts will be deleted. (moderators, please enforce this). This will be for myself included... only comments by truely "new" users will be allowed in this thread.

Discuss away...

(this could fail miserably if no one replies :) )

Sorry I joined a few days ago and launched straight into questions without an intro.

How rude of me.

My real name is John, I live in NW England, I've been a Mac user since 2011 but have watched the scene closely for decades longer. I'm mainly interested in home music production, but use my Mac and Apple gear for the usual host of other general activities.

Within the next few weeks I'll be updating my ageing kit to new a M1-spec machine. I'm here to learn, give advice where I can, and generally join-in the chit-chat without ruffling too many feathers.

Thanks for having me.

Hello, I'm new here. I first came here when the iPhone 14 rumors but grew to love this site after seeing the iPhone 13 mini. Now I have one and I'm here to discuss anything iOS based.

Oh, to have designed computing hardware at the same time with the same chips Jobs and Woz were using in a garage, no way around it, been there and done a lot of that. Still doing that, though, and a lot of other thats as well (Fender, I'm looking in your direction) in addition to research into the neural correlates of conscious behavior, some fun, that that...

(The avatar is due to Edgerton, credit well deserved - that's an early Nevada test blast, the cable stays connecting the tower to the ground still stretched taut despite half the tower and half of each cable vaporized, nothing but momentum left holding the empty end. At the moment the shutter blinked, momentum hadn't even begun to get the message. Pretty cool camera, eh?)

Hi, I'm Irapp.
I have a Mac Pro 5,1 mid 2012 2 x 3.33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon 64 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 running Big Sur 11.6.1 that I just installed with OpenCore. Everything seems to be working great, even the start and boot screen with my non flashed RX580

I've been a fan of MacRumors for a long time and today decided it was time to take full advantage of all that is offered. Apple has trapped me in their ecosystem and am happy with the result most of the time. Still have quirky problems which are sometimes user error and other times owned by the good folks at Apple. I figured this may be the best source of info for these types of head scratching issues.

Hi all,

I had been meaning to sign up on the forum for a while now. I started falling down a vintage Macintosh rabbit hole during the pandemic. Before that I was a regular viewer of LGR on YouTube and thought about getting a vintage IBM machine. The school system I was in growing up was an Apple district. I used everything from Apple IIe's to bondi blue iMacs. I wanted to relive some of my old computer lab memories!

This past summer I bought an iBook G3 dual USB. The someone gave me a StarMax clone. I ended up buying a PowerBook G4 Ti thinking that would be my last machine...Since then I have added an Apple IIGS and PowerBook G3 Pismo that I recently upgraded to a G4 550mhz card.

My interest in old Apple's resulted in my purchase of a M1 MacBook Air. While I still use my Windows 10 computers for work, the Air is what I use for personal use on a daily basis. I absolutely love this machine!

Hey, Pre covid, I was a MS systems Engineer, Field Network and Server support engineer, MCSE blabla, for about 20 years. Started my own thing and really wanted to start using and comparing the as well as multitasking using a mac but never "got around to it". I now have a fairly decent i7 Macbook Pro on my desk next a comparative i7 dell xps, and about 6 screens if you include the Macbook and laptop's ones to amounts a whole boat load of music equipment, DJ Equipment, electrical diagnostic stuff, oh and cables. loads of cables haha.
I would say i'm pretty new to macs and have been enjoying having one.

more so, i created a account on the site because i been really enjoying reading the posts on how to get around the various intricacies of versions, compatibility, software, updates, old software, old equipment on new stuff, new stuff on old stuff, etc etc, and really enjoyed reading the ever so polite roasting of arrogance and ignorance in some of the posts asking for help but really working against taking or even appreciating the advice. well handled, well moderated and nicely put haha.

I mainly want to say thank you though to all the people who take the time out of their lives to help people with information for nothing more than the increase in post numbers.

I have been in the tech support industry for a lifetime and what i have learned is that time is the most precious and expensive thing we have have, so spending it (like currency) is giving it to someone you don't know and just to help. That is just amazing of you ... So... Thank you so far.. and maybe i will hopefully be able to help people with what i have learned so far.
especially if anyone gets stuck or struggles with the windows side of a virtual solution they are trying to achieve.
iv done a fair amount in that department old and new from pc to major server/data centre level. so will try my best assist where i can.
This site has saved me hours of heir pulling, gritted teeth and making many growling whining noises while trying to get something working.

big ups, much love
