I would be concerned about being dropped. They will be passed around and a lot of people with slippery fingers (or intoxicated :D ) might drop them. I like the iPad idea to show pictures, a lot. Depends on your budget. But I would probably put them inside a Life Proof or Otterbox case to avoid any unpleasantness of it being dropped, people feeling bad, etc., as much as having to replace them. They are very sturdy. But, like you say, people will be focusing on the pictures themselves and probably not mind handling an encased iPad.

Whoa, the issue is getting some serious press coverage now.

Yes because apple is asking for $400 for a mini tablet which is inferior to even a $229 tablet in respects to the display, the single most important component to any visual computing device.

Only the iSheep's in this thread will think otherwise.

PS - and look how fast it's being pushed down the main page  trying to sweep this issue under the rug, lol.

Just because it's not a problem for you doesn't mean it's not a real issue or it's a technical PROBLEM. Look at antenna-gate. iSheeps all over praising they just use a case anyway, no problems! I don't know what the big deal is! Then iPhone 4S comes out fixes everything, everyone forgets about the faults apple makes.

Try's the MacRumors front page for starters. Giz, CNET, GigaOM, Pocketnow, PhoneArena.

So PocketNow basically ran a very small blurb about AnandTech's findings. They concluded by saying:
"It would have been nice to get all the quality of the full-sized iPad’s display on the new mini, and it’s a little disappointing that Apple wasn’t able to do that, but if we had to choose between the resolution improvements and this color reproduction, we’d say that Apple made the right call."

Condemnation indeed.... :D

The shoot-out that was covered on Giz and conducted with a trusted panel of display experts called the Mini's display a "distant third," "inexcusable," and "disappointing."

Yeah I know I head straight to Fox when I'm looking for impartial tech news. Gimme a break.

Oh geez, save your politics for some other board.

I was merely rattling off random mainstream news organizations instead of tech blogs.

The Gizmodo article was just a reprint of DisplayMate's already published article. Not exactly breaking news, and I don't see how Dr. Soneira is a "panel" of experts.

I'm aware that it was a reprint, and confused as to why that makes the conclusions any less valid or public.

Really? Wow. I read in another post someone making the excellent argument that despite having a 1024x768 pixel screen, "inexcusable" gamut coverage, 512MB of RAM (not even 1GB!) and a two generation old processor, the original Mini sold like hot cakes.

I guess a lot of people excused Apple then. I wonder what impact this will have on rMini sales...

The word NEGLIGIBLE comes to mind...

No, of course not. We all know it was Bush's fault...

MSNBC is now reporting that this color gamut issue is Bush's fault while Fox insists it is Obama's. CNN has determined that since it is not a Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday... they are going to agree with MSNBC's call.

We don't have to be the hordes of uninformed consumers who buy Apple products. We can know of the flaws, discuss them, and weigh them on our decision to purchase. Apple is charging $400 for a device whose screen is of noticeably worse quality than its competitors at nearly half the price point.

For the record, I'm typing this on my rMini. I love the thing. The build quality is unparalleled, the screen is sharp, and despite the atrocious iOS 7 this thing is pretty snappy. But I don't love that Apple is borderline exploitative lately, and obsessed with finding the maximum price ceiling whilst increasing their margins.

The iPad mini with retina display is Apple’s second generation mini tablet. The first generation iPad mini was disappointing because not only did it have a low resolution low PPI display, but its small 62 percent Color Gamut was the same as the older iPad 2, instead of the 100 percent Color Gamut on the iPad 3 and iPad 4 (and the new iPad Air). The new iPad mini with retina display has a high resolution high PPI display like the other two mini tablets that we test here. But shockingly, it still has the same small 63 percent color gamut as the original iPad mini and even older iPad 2. As a result, the iPad mini with retina display comes in with a distant 3rd place finish behind the innovative displays on the Kindle Fire HDX 7 and new Nexus 7. More on these issues below.

Ouch..

Soneira is looking at the displays only. If you would like a tablet, there's more to it than that. CNET called the rMini "The Best Small Tablet Yet", and concluded its review with:

"As Apple heads into 2014, there are a lot of future directions I can imagine it heading. The larger iPad, perhaps, could co-evolve with the MacBook Air into the next-step future of computing. The Mini, though, is fine where it is. Other than price and inevitable spec bumps (and, maybe, Touch ID), I wouldn’t change a thing."

I saw your latest post, and you said you're using a rMini. Between that, and media reviews, I'm ready to buy one. ;)

Well I would definitely base my purchasing decision on comments made by "trusted display experts" instead of trying the device out myself and deciding if I like the screen or not.

Ok, everyone needs to calm down about this whole color gamut thing

And it's good that you do. There are many though that do not and rely pretty heavily on reviews, and a review like that is pretty damning.

I'd like for someone to find one post on this site that mentioned color gamut on the iPad mini with Retina Display prior to November 12th. Didn't stop everyone here from ordering it at 3am.
