All OnePlus needs to do is follow the Xiaomi template. Flash sales. Forget the invite system. OnePlus has the jump on Xiaomi in the Western markets. They don't seem like they are taking advantage of the first-mover approach.

I can easily forgive some flaws from the OnePlus One. This is generally just their first gen device although it really is an Oppo Find 7 with CM and lesser price tag. Things can definitely improve from each generation. But 1+ isn't taking advantage of being first over Xiaomi in the Western world.

yes....completely agree. They have made some mistakes and need to move quickly to capture momentum. But they seem slow to make changes. We'll see how they do with the second generation devices. They should come out quickly with a newer better version in the next few months. If they wait a year to releases phones....they might be forgotten amid all the great new phones being released.....

OnePlus recieves Android 4.4 today!

The One Plus One is receiving Android 4.4 today!
To solve the yellow tinting of the screen, the update brings a cooler calibration of the screen.
Camera improvements!

Today, the OnePlus One began to receive the Android 4.4.4 update, which comes full of fixes for all of the bugs you may have been experiencing. The update brings a fix to the camera called Clear Image. According to OnePlus, “Once you switch on the new Clear Image mode in the Camera app, nothing but awesomeness will be captured.” All pictures should have more detail, and low light shots will be clearer with less noise. To solve the yellow tinting of the screen, the update brings a cooler calibration of the screen.

With the help of the proximity sensor, the phone will no longer switch displays once in your pocket. The touch keys are more illuminated and the device should be much more stable. The issue that prevented vibrations from being deactivated during quiet hours has been fixed too, and now song info will be updated on the lock screen.

A few more smaller fixes are fixing the “Ok Google” Google Now launch and the “O” camera gesture. Your wallpapers should all be the correct size on your screen and the volume of the microphone while voice recording should be correct.

Really torn with this phone.

Received it today. Absolutely loved the packaging. That size though. Wow.

Having such wide bezels def is not helping. Its size is really noticeable on those side by sides with the S5, the M8, and even the note 3.

I've always used iPhones. Everytime I try to break away I would always come back. The longest android I've used is probably the original nexus and that was because I accidentally sold my iphone. That was a very long 4 days to say the least haha.

Right now, I look at the phone and all I can think about is how I won't be able to send people messages when all I have is only wifi (theres google talk but still, I seem to have more friends with iOS devices than android devices. Also more convenient being able to send photos and videos seamlessly over wifi).

I also don't have Day One or Due. I don't know. I'll figure something out. Right now, its def not looking good for the OPO though. I wish I could give new things a chance *sigh* I hate being so engrossed into an ecosystem. Its difficult to go to a completely new OS.

Xiaomi production capacity >>>>> OnePlus even if they're backed by Oppo.

Even with the flash sales, they're sold out within minutes. So would you rather wait forever without the chance to buy one or have the chance to get an invite, which guarantees you a device? OP stated that they didn't want people ordering a device and have to wait like 3 months without the shipping. At least with an invite, you know you'll get one.

Ive just about had it with this company.

Ive had multiple defects out of the box and sent an email asking for a replacement. That was a week ago. They email me 3 days after that asking me if the problems been resolved.

What the hell?

Fast forward another 4 days and no response still.

Re. Availability and flash sales:

In China, there seems no real issues with production as the 16gb model is openly available to buy anytime direct from OPO's website. The 64gb model seems in more demand (no surprise) and that is the current subject of flash sales which are happening every week if not more frequently.

Having watched this morning's flash sale, there was enough stock to last 30-45 minutes worth of orders depending on if you chose black or white - I watched it open and close. Obviously there's no way to assess how many devices were sold but it's reasonable to assume the order system auto closed once the allocation had been ordered. It was one per customer (or account / telephone number).

The next flash sale for 64gb models is in 3 days so there's consistent stock being made in Shenzen, allocated, and shipping out as soon as orders are made and paid for (must pay within 2 hours of making the order). There's no way to 'pre-order' and then get told its a 3-month wait or whatever - once stock is allocated, the sale closes.

In somewhat of an about turn, I have ended up with a black 64gb model in transit. A colleague who wanted the phone but wasn't available to order today at 10am when the flash sale began gave me 3,000 CNY to order him one. He's an impatient soul.

Given the 64gb price is 2,299 I could either pocket the 700 or, as I did, use it to get a 64gb OPO for 1,600CNY (~259 USD). I'm still wanting a 64gb 4g Mi 4 but they're not available until mid-September so this will be a stop gap until then. I don't think I'll get use to the size despite previously having a Note 2 but it's a nice toy for 30% off the already low price.

My preference is still these flash sales over invites. 30-45 minutes is the longest flash sale I've seen compared to recent Xiaomi and Huawei sales which suggests stock is being prioritised to China first. The two I ordered have already dispatched from Shenzen, direct from the factory, to arrive in 2-3 days' time.

I'm half expecting some yellowing (isn't there an update to adjust this?) but at least it'll be easier dealing with any critical faults or returns.

I believe the update corrects yellow screens not the banding. IMO, both issues are still a manufacturer defect, not a problem that can be solved with an update or cooler display settings.

----------

And does nothing to fix yellow banding.

OnePlus One: The cheaper Oppo

I believe OPPO suffers from the same yellow screens.

I love the phone, I really do but they need a PR person stat! Just ridiculous.

Their entire marketing team need to be given their marching orders and they need to hire experienced individuals or a company to handle the marketing for them.

Just because you give a monkey photoshop, doesn't mean they will create anything other than monkey poop on a computer screen ....

Looks like the ladies have a better shot at the phone than others on this new "contest".

http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/12/5...t-ladies-first-contest-for-smartphone-invites

Annnnnd they've removed the contest thread.

This is one phone company I'll never support with my cash, on principle. Encouraging people to smash valuable phones, censoring threads, dodging critique of bad build quality by claiming users are lying, the whole invite system as such....and now this. Incredible.

That was my main reason for not keeping it .... it was too big for me. I've actually regressed of late and gone back to using smaller devices for practicality purposes.

Oh my.

This really is a new low for them. Do they really not have the foresight to understand these catastrophic PR moves they're making internationally? It's difficult to think they will get any worse but I'm almost expecting it.

These 'contests' just look like delaying tactics while they supply the local market first given how easy it is to simply buy one on the mainland versus these drip-feed invites and embarrassing competitions. That and causing many forums to become a cesspit of beggars spamming for invites.

As for the screens, I now know three people with OPOs and one is yellowy. I can't see how a software update can solve what looks like a clear manufacturing fault. As for Find 7 screens: I've handled plenty when I visit stores with time to kill and not seen a bad one yet (not that I expect a store to showcases a dud). My main issue with the 7 I'd the battery life from the QHD screen. 7a is much less thirsty at 1080p.

LOL @ their Marketing/PR Team! Please don't let any of these guys make any hardware suggestions for the OnePlus Two next year. Oh well, the OPO is an awesome phone. I'm satisfied.

Indeed!

If this is the same person who had the Smash Your Phone idea, then perhaps it's time they were removed. Or at least the management should be vetoing any such dumb ideas. They appear to completely lack any thought other than what they perceive as 'fun'. I sense they have a massive cultural awareness gap.

OPO marketing: "Let's smash iPhones and Samsungs, that's fun!". Everyone else: "err maybe it's also dangerous and a waste that others could use."

OPO marketing: "Let's get girls to send in pics so we anti-social boys can choose who is the prettiest - that's fun!". Everyone else: "err that was never fun and the world has moved on."

They are lucky nobody really knows who they are as this is a real reputation killer. Imagine the furore if this was Apple, Samsung, or any other big player? It'd be front page news and sackings galore.

what's wrong with it?

Wifi will not connect no matter what. My other phone and tablet can connect fine.

Ghosting issues with display. Especially noticeable when swiping between pages or turning phone in landscape and portrait. Can see an ugly black trail.

Vibrate motor sounds like its dying. Makes a cheap and loud rattle sound.

OnePlus “Ladies First” invite contest adds sexism as another embarrassing black eye to eCommerce
http://phandroid.com/2014/08/12/oneplus-one-ladies-first-contest/

Yet another reason not to buy this phone and support this BS company  I mean the invite system nightmare was sad enough, and now this  On principle, no way I'd buy this phone, **** em for being such douche bags at poor marketing, and lack of production.

The Nexus 6 is just two months away, will be the same price, but run next gen / newer hardware and have Android L running out of the box.

Hey, the phone is pretty good. It isn't our fault that their marketing team sucks and they have an invite system. And, doubtful we'll be able to get a 64GB Nexus 6 for $349, especially if it has a 5.9" screen. It actually feels good knowing I'm walking around with a phone that hardly anyone has. Regardless of their tactics, $349 for a 64GB OPO is a steal. No other way around that.
