I think it's amazing the number of people who think they and their little lives are actually important enough for anyone to actually care about... LOL
Sure if you are running a country, or have your finger on the nuclear button, but 99.999999% of people are basically just uninteresting no-bodies as far as anyone important is concerned.
In a way I'd actually feel pretty flattered if a country was trying to collect detailed data about me! LOL.
You are a data point. I am a data point. We're all data points. It's the aggregation and analysis of the data that they want. They want to know if we like widgets and whether we like left handed ones or right handed ones. As Michael Corleone said: "It's just business, it's not personal'.

Still don’t see how any of this is Artificial INTELLIGENCE. Everything I tried so far just seems to be improved automations and command lines. I have yet to see AI inventing anything on its own. Hey AI, come up with some new battery technology because our own solutions suck. At the very least it should find solutions to problems I don’t even know I have yet before I encounter them, not just react to what I tell it to do
There is significant work being done regarding protein folding using AI. They can be programmed to look for specific configurations and run through the possibilities. Also in radiographic diagnosis. The stuff being done in back rooms is much more interesting than chatbots.

Exactly.

Apple should be burning with embarrassment about how they were ahead with Siri and then simply did nothing with it. It even goes backwards and is inconsistent. Things it could do well are suddenly retrograde. Asking questions of Siri is often torturous. It doesn't understand context very well at all. On AI, Apple has really dropped the ball. All that research and the billions that went into the Apple Car should have gone into a Siri replacement. Maybe WWDC will show Apple is in fact getting ahead, but somehow I doubt it.

This is so dumb and annoying. As far as I can tell, the Mac app is supposed to be out already, but no one knows how to get it. I think that means it's not available, even though the OpenAI website talks like it is...

But even if it does get released, we're never going to find it because there's what looks like about 3,000 ChatGPT scam apps on the App Store. Apple really needs to clean house. Suddenly I'm not buying the excuse anymore for why we can't install anything we want on iOS and iPadOS. The walled garden is overrun with weeds now.

I love Chat-GPT. I don't even care that it's often wrong. If I were trapped on an deserted island for the rest of my life and could only bring one thing, I'd bring Chat-GPT.

Just managed to download the MacOS ChatGPT app. A banner appeared just above the search window for me while logged in at https://chatgpt.com

Clicking "Download" on the banner downloaded ChatGPT_Desktop_public_latest.dmg
which installed easily.
However, it doesn't do too much. It opens a tiny command line or can expand to a full window that looks just like the web version. You can have it take screenshots and interpret them as illustrated here:

If you open the full app, it works just like the updated iOS app with voice commands (just select the 4o model). Took two tries for it to connect.

Once I downloaded it, the banner didn't appear again (should have taken a screenshot). I cannot find another way to access the download.

No banner for me. I contacted support and got this response:

Hi there, The ChatGPT MacOS app is currently being rolled out to a small portion of our users, with plans to enable access to all of our users later this year. If you have not yet received access, it means the rollout has not yet reached you. We appreciate your patience as we work to make the app available to everyone. For more information on the MacOS app and its features, you can visit our Help Center article on the ChatGPT MacOS app. Stay tuned for updates on wider availability! Best,
OpenAI Team

With OpenAi's new announcements. Will Apple be playing catch up or are they going to be on par with it? The ability to have Siri speak to you as if it were a real person is a big deal. But I never felt we would get anything as good as the demo today. But if it does not, it will look like it has to play catchup the day it comes out.

I haven’t seen anything yet. I’m on a teams account, so might not be in this wave.

Most of the time, if an app is free, it means your usage details will be exploited and sold over and over. If you don't think that is happening here, you are wrong.

"ChatGPT, I'm trying to sell time shares in Las Vegas, which phone numbers should I call?"

Optimizing ad spending is still one of the biggest uses for AI.

Hmmm that just seems to enable 4o in the web interface

Most intelligent animals (including humans) have quite low ratio of inventions.
Example: the wheel. Near as I can tell by reading people who supposedly know these sort of things, the wheel was likely invented once then copied, as the invention spread out (probably from central Asia?).

Unlike writing ( a language), which does appear to have been invented a handful of times over thousands of years in disparate locations.

"How do I get 4o?"
Even on their website, OpenAI buries the release information down near the bottom. Apparently today ChatGPT 4o is rolling out only to an extended "red team", and after that it will be rolled out incrementally to all, no date is given.

No. It was a small, wide bubble on the ChatGPT conversation page just above the chat window where it normally has bubbles for things like "Give me tips".
You aren't missing much though. It seems to be a pretty early proof of concept that is 95% the same as the iOS app, just with some MacOS ways to upload things. The voice chat stuttered quite a bit, like in their YouTube demo. Possibly just overloaded and why they have paused adding users.

How naive to not realise that everything you do, view, where you go etc is all worth money to marketing, government groups. To know and manipulate how people think is a tremendous power. Becomes a hell of a lot easier when you control the content and answers in an LLM.

You know, you could simply read what I said using the dictionary definition of the word, as was intended, and you wouldn’t be so confused.

Luddite refers to someone who is opposed to change, and especially to technological change.”

Not sure why your strange conclusion was that I was calling someone a 19th century laborer protesting against textile machines…

People no longer accept this dictionary definition as it was a rewrite of history by money grabbing tyrants.
