So for anyone wondering similar. It went to Preparing to Dispatch last night, and has been dispatched this afternoon (24th), to be delivered 26th. So about a 2/3 day turn around for me.Mine changed to 'Preparing to Dispatch' this evening. Does anyone know roughly how long it takes from here...I'm excited!
Just received delivery of my 5K. Well worth the upgrade from a Mid-2011 Mini with SSD. The screen is frigging amazing

There is no need to throw out the stock RAM. Just add the 2x8GB in the two empty slots. That way you will have 24GB RAM, which should be more than enough for many years into the future with what you are using the iMac for. As Dragoro says, you probably don't even need to upgrade the RAM at all for now.I plan to upgrade the ram to crucial 2x8GB (and throw out the 2x4GB)
OS X will run from the 24GB SSD inside the computer, so the OS should be pretty responsive. For all other files, yes an external SSD will most likely be faster. However, with what you are planning on using it for I would suggest that you try out the stock configuration first. If you are not satisfied with the speed then using an external SSD for all of your programs might be the way to.Due to the lack of an SSD I plan to work with a USB 3.0 (with UASP) external SSD (samsung 850 pro) and install OSX on that one, does that work a bit snappy and responsive?

I got neither Swedish fermented herring nor a Midsummer pole in my box so guess it's the keyboard config Apple refers to, the stock adaptor plug on the end of the laptop's power adaptor. Basically all the stuff that makes your computer "native" to your country.
You're in for a treat! This is gonna be my first iMac, so really looking forward to it.
I have my new late '15 27" iMac sitting in the living room waiting for christmas morn. My wife picked it up for me for buying her a macbook pro. Still have my late '11 27" running in great shape.
Congrats and enjoy! I'm sure it's hard to wait (Mine arrived late last week - but not in the box anymore)
Just hit the order button on a Retina 5K beast!!
The last iMac I owned was a 24" 2007 iMac, but I only had it about 6 months before switching to a laptop.
- 4 GHz i7
- 8 GB ram (already purchased 32 GB kit for it off Newegg as I see apple is back to remarkably over charging for ram upgrades)
- 1 TB SSD
- AMD R9 M395x w/ 4 GB
- Magic Trackpad
I'm upgrading from a 2013 MBA (Core i5 1.3 GHz with 4 GB ram).
Can't wait to use Lightroom and my astrophotography image stacking software on this thing!
You're in for a treat!
Ordered it last Saturday with an Apple reseller, 2-3 weeks delivery tho. Can't wait!
