I ordered a MF886ll/a instead of a MK472ll/a because of the better Fusion drive and $100 off. Am I a dummy?

I just finished setting up my new 3.3 Ghz, 2TB Fusion, M395 iMac (via setup assistant and a TM BU). I added 16GB of memory (from OWC) to the "stock" 8GB for a total of 24GB. I'll be using it primarily for photo editing (Lightroom) with some light video editing.

This is an upgrade to my mid 2010, 1TB HDD, 2.93 i7 (that will now be going up for sale). I didn't realize how slow the 2010 had gotten. This new iMac runs circles around my 2010 model. One other thing I've noticed is how cool the new iMac runs. I could fry an egg on the back of my 2010 iMac after only light use.

Very happy with the upgrade!

I just got through opening up my 2010 iMac to pull out the 256 Samsung 840 Pro that I had installed in the extra SATA port on the iMac. I'm prepping it for sale! Any idea what I could get for a mid 2010 27 inch, 2.93 i7, 12GB ram, 1TB HDD? I've always had great luck selling Apple products on Craigs List (i.e. iPads, MacBooks, iMacs, iPhones). I'll try there first. I paid $1,575 back in 2011 when I bought it new. I'm thinking $800 (ish) might not be unreasonable. What do you think?

My mid 2010 i'm selling for 500 but it is 21 inch. Been on market for a few weeks no biters.

what are the specs on those models? generally if you spent more money, you made the right choice ;-)

The keyboard is rather small. My wife makes fun of it ;). You sure went all out with your iMac, that'll be a beast.

Think most are used to that after using the previous one.

Which one? I haven't had a new iMac since 2007, been kind of out of the loop. I remember the keyboard on the original iMac G3 was tiny as well.

Just ordered 5k iMac

• 3,2 GHz Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost 3,6 GHz)
• 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 SDRAM – 2, 4 GB
• 256 GB SSD
• AMD Radeon R9 M380 med 2 GB grafikminne
• Magic Trackpad 2

What's the verdict on the magic trackpad 2 when used with the iMac? I was thinking about getting one.

I didn't get it for the force touch, i just like it more than a mouse. The rechargeability is wonderful -- the old trackpad would eat through batteries.

I used one at the store, and the texture was great. I've always thought Apple makes the best trackpads, it's one of the greatest parts of my MBA, IMO.

Not a huge fan. The old one was just fine. I find force touch annoying and I turned it off. Rechargeable is nice.

Thanks for the feedback, I found force touch unique, but I'm not sure I'd like it on all the time. Good to know you can toggle it off.

Just had my 5K Retina iMac 27'

3.3GHz Processor
2TB Storage

  • 3.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor
  • Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
  • 8GB (two 4GB) memory, configurable up to 32GB
  • 2TB Fusion Drive1
  • AMD Radeon R9 M395 with 2GB video memory
  • Retina 5K 5120x2880 P3 display
But I just bought 2 x 8 GB OWC ram!

So now its 24 Gb RAM. :)

Loving it!

Pulled the trigger on this today and ordered via the aussie apple store.
Feedback on the forums so far has been extremely positive, so I figured why not.

Configuration
  • 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display
  • 4.0GHz QC i7, TB up to 4.2GHz
  • 8GB 1867MHz DDR3L (2x4GB)
  • 1TB Flash Storage
  • AMD Radeon R9 M395X w/4GB
  • MAGIC TRACKPAD 2-ITS
  • Apple WL Kybd+User's Guide-X
  • COUNTRY KIT-X
I'll be increasing the memory via aftermarket. Probably go to 32GB.
Delivery times look good, end of this week / early next week according to the website and order status page.

Looking forward to my day to day usage machine being an iMac again. At my previous job I had used one every day for the last couple of years and I far preferred it to windows for day to day use.

Although I occasionally experience some pangs for not going 1TB Flash, I've (so far) found the 512 drive fine as long as my massive media files are on my external drive. As for 32GB RAM, it's more than most people need. Consider going up to 24GB to start and watch your usage.

The 1TB drive was a bit of a no brainer for me as it was an element that wasn't going to be easy to upgrade after market. Would 512Gb be enough? Probably. It takes me about 2 years of regular use to fill a drive like that. So the 1Tb just means I don't need to worry about it as much. I am also a bit of a VM junkie, so its not unusual for me to have several virtual machines running at once. Which is where the RAM comes into play. I already have my own custom built NAS solution for storing really big files / virtual machines and a GIG-E network wired to handle it all.

I am not a hard core software developer by any means, but I always have a lot of ideas to explore. That flexibility of more is good for me. My current windows machine has 64GB of RAM in it. There is nothing quite like loading a disk intensive application (or game) into the ramdisk and watching it fly.

So I've got some fun times ahead and I am looking forward to it.

I went with the 1TB Fusion drive. I'm going to pick up a 4K camcorder this spring, I'll end up getting an external thunderbolt drive for FCPX.

I'd agree with your observation on RAM. My server (Mac Pro) has 20GB and serves my needs well. I have 2 Linux VM's for various things and the typical usage of file sharing, web, wiki, cal, contacts, FTP (internal only!) and media streaming (video and audio). It generally uses about 13GB, no need to upgrade to any more in my usage scenario. I think this single CPU 4,1 will handle 64GB, but that's off-topic...

RAM for the 5K iMacs from OWC and others is CHEAP! I think 32GB will run you $214, not bad at all. If you can spare it, why not throw the max in there? I figured 32GB was overkill for me, so I put an extra 8 in for 16GB total. I generally use photoshop to process RAW images, Aperture, and FCPX for 1080 video, nothing fancy just iPhone video of the kids :). Like I said I plan on getting a 4K camcorder...we'll see how the RAM holds out editing 4K!

So my new BTO iMac is due for delivery by the weekend.
I've ordered some extra RAM and do I just put it straight into the 2 free memory banks? Seen a topic on here the other day explaining something about installing the memory sticks in pairs is recommended for better performance.

Thanks

The 1TB Fusion on the new iMacs (2015) only comes with 24GB Flash (as opposed to the 2TB which comes with 128GB Flash). So hopefully you got a 1TB NVRAM FLASH drive as the 1TB fusion is not recommended!

No, I went with the stock 1TB Fusion drive. As far as "not recommended"...in terms of what? It was a trade off between price and storage space. So far I haven't had any speed issues. The apps I use most frequently can easily fit in 24GB of flash storage. FCPX, Photoshop CS6, and a few others.

When you open the back hatch open for RAM you'll see two open spaces. Just pop 'em in there.

After issues with Fedex I received my iMac. Powered on and two stuck pixels appear :( ran Drive DX and shows that the drive has had 45 hours on time and 30 power cycles with 1.1 TB written... Have not experienced this on previous macs... Am I too fussy and paranoid?
I am having it exchanged but I feel as if this iMac was returned and then repackaged.
