If I have one minor regret, it's not going all out and getting the 1TB Flash Drive. But god was it a pricey upgrade and I have external storage (RAID) to burn.
I plan on keeping this machine for 5+ years so I wanted the full tilt 1TB Flash drive, yea it was spendy but I figure I won't regret it down the road and have max speed on the full 1TB.
I was shocked when Apple tech support said mine was being built in the USA.....that's awesome.
I had also asked what the criteria of USA vs China build was, and she said she didn't know.
Waiting patiently.......NOT.![]()
China is 12+ hours ahead of the US, so that explains why they have finished processing Mondays batch (orders placed on the 13th) as they are well past end of day and the California factories are just about to open....I find it funny how some of the China orders have shipped while my California order is still "processing" away the days. Guess that's the "laid back" California lifestyle. . .
Without enough data, hypothesis is possible the higher end machines with the i7s and 395 GPUs are being built in the US and the lower end machines are coming from China with lots of heatsink goopLet's test that hypothesis. Go!
I tried to ask Apple support, they couldn't tell me. Someone said they got the info somehow. But where it ships from, especially if it is a build to order, will be your first clue. Confirmation will come if your iMac says 'Assembled in the US or 'Assembled in China'Where can you find out if the order is being built in China or the US?

Chatted with an Apple Rep via online. I was told that the configured orders are shipped from overseas and the stock ones are shipped from their warehouses in the US.
I think that's backwards....
My BTO is confirmed built and shipped from USA.
save those $300 and keep for a RAM upgrade in the futureThis is what I have now: 24" 2007 iMac 2.4GHz intel core 2 duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM with ATi Radeon 1TB HD 2600 Pro 256 MB. My capacity is 749.3 GB of which I am using 77.95GB.
This is what I am considering: 27" 5K Retina iMac with the 4.0 GHz quad core, 512GB flash storage and 8GB memory which I will probably upgrade to 16 myself.
I know pretty much anything I get will be a big improvement. My one big question is the processor choice. Am I better off with the 3.2GHz considering I am not a big power user (seldom have more than one application running at a time) and saving the $300? This is my Christmas present to myself and probably the last iMac I will be buying (retiring next year). Just want to be sure I have covered my bases. Thanks so much for any help.
I believe it's the power cable.Great humor!
Mine says the same.....
Sounds like it has something to do with the type of keyboard layout.
Just finished with a chat with Apple to get an update. The rep briefly changed my order to expedited (which would cost an additional $27) and the Mac would theoretically arrive between the 20th and 22nd. With standard shipping, the dates are the 23rd-27th, but she said that usually the iMacs arrive towards the very beginning of those dates (and some in the UK thread are reporting that their iMacs are scheduled to arrive a day early).
If I have one minor regret, it's not going all out and getting the 1TB Flash Drive. But god was it a pricey upgrade and I have external storage (RAID) to burn. I do recommend the 4TB Seagate Backup Fast Drives -- without going SSD, the best speed you can get. Portable, bus powered. http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/portable-hard-drives/performance/backup-plus-fast-hdd/ I will eventually get an external SSD or flash drive when I need additional super fast access. USB3 is still plenty to handle those drives.
Also, the iMac takes SODIMMS DDR3L (laptop size memory) at 1.35 (low volt) and I recommend getting an additional 2X8GB for a total of 24GB. That last 8GB won't make a difference to most people. Also, the iMac ships with speed 1866 RAM CL13, but most likely supports 2133 speed. Memory will run at the slowest speed installed be it CL (lower is better) or MHz (higher is better) and there are plenty of articles debating whether speed or latency matters that much and how much it matters. If you want to go down that rabbit hole, google it! Also, some low voltage DIMMS are only market as DDR3, not DDR3L -- but look at the specs. You are looking for 1.35 volts!
Finally, it has been reported that some of the iMacs are being built here in the USofA which is awesome and should also cut on shipping time. When you report shipping, please note where you are located and where the iMac is shipping from -- and reply to your own post so we have configuration information!
PS Those of you waiting for target display mode, don't! Thunderbolt 3 still supports display port 1.2 (as well as USB 3.1) and DP 1.2 does not support target mode. So unless Apple Goes out of their way to add DP 1.3 (who knows if this will happen if they don't need it) this is what you get.
Just finished chatting with Apple support.........
Asked them about the status of my order and here is a snippet of the conversation, this is news to me!
Apple:
It is also being built and shipped within the US so I can assure you it will be super fast!
Me:
Oh, I thought these were built in China??
Apple:
Some of them are, but your order looks like it is being shipped from one of our US warehouses.
Yeah, I think all BTO's are built in the US.
