This is the same spec I'm considering, would love to hear your initial thoughts/impressions (once you have it up and running).

I got the 4.2 i7, 580, w/ 1TB SSD and 40GB ram. (8 Apple, 32 Crucial.)

I was lucky; mine was not on the 512SSD shortage so I got it within days of ordering.

The screen is amazing, the colors are so vibrant it's stunning! And everything is super fast.

I can run all 3 Mac games at full res and at 60FPS. (WoW, D3 and SC2)

The order status page seems to be down right now, but if nothing has changed I still have 2-3 weeks of waiting to do :( I'm not really a patient guy... :D

Mine ordered on 15/06 through an Apple reseller (iMac 27" i7) and delivered to him last Friday, the 14th.

After all of the mix ups and communication breakdowns, it looks like I'll end up getting my rig just one day late (bumped from 7/18 to 7/19). I doubt that would have happened if I hadn't escalated my concerns to a manager. She acknowledged the 512 gig SSD shortage. She addressed my "why no i7/SSD rigs in Apple Stores?" question and her response made sense (trying to conserve back room storage-that space is apparently for mobile tech ). Still a bummer for potential walk ins who want to cash and carry desktop rigs with a little more oomph. Oh well, at least I know they'll have plenty of stock when I need to upgrade my MacBook Pro.

I still wonder why the CSRs I chatted with dodged the SSD issue. My guess-they have to stick to a very rigid script. In the end I got expedited shipping and free accessories that would have cost me a couple hundred bucks, so I'm quite pleased. I can't wait to set up my new rig.

This experience has made me wary about CTO. I guess it was too soon after a spec bump announcement.

How did you manage to get free accessories, just asked them? I've gotten a lot of kind words and apologies, but nothing worth any cash. Even got an e-mail saying they've launched an investigation, but nothing after that.

I just kept expressing my disappointment in Apple customer service. I've been an Apple customer since System 7, always been pleased with the company up until this experience, etc.

She kept apologizing to me. While I acknowledged the apologies, I never accepted them. I didn't give her a hard time, nor was I rude. I just made it clear I was very unhappy with what I felt was misdirection and poor communication from Apple. She finally asked what it would take to resolve the issue. Thats when I advised I would appreciate faster shipping and free accessories. I get the feeling they will refuse if customers just ask. I was persistent until she made an offer.

She even called me back yesterday evening to let me know that my accessories were set up for expedited shipping 7/17.

Anyone who got the Beats edu deal retroactively online got their headphones or at least the confirmatory email for their headphones yet?

For my two orders (iMac and MacBook) I was told I’d probably qualify for one set (but likely not two). However I have heard nothing since the originally call I made last Wednesday. They did say it may take a few days, but nonetheless I am curious if anyone else have gotten confirmation emails.

I returned my first iMac and reordered it. Now I have my headphones and am waiting for my more beefy iMac with an SSD drive. The beats sound great and integrate into my apple ecosystem well. :)

Ordered the i5 3.8GHz, 1TB SSD on July 10. Got this puppy this AM (less than 7 full days later) and can't believe I waited so long to get this amazing 5K display. My old eyes can see everything clearly now. All I can say to those who told me this screen will be difficult to read because of the "too small text" is they can go pound sand. I am very happy with the font clarity and detail, straight out of the box without any adjustments. Oh yes, and the font size is perfect. Did I say how great this screen is?

Later, got lotsa photos and videos to play with.

Edit:
Fired this puppy up at the breakfast bar in the kitchen. Will report back on my assessment of the noise level after moving into my office. Refrigerator is too noisy to hear the reported noisy fan in the iMac.

The font size is fine for a lot of people, but may be small for others. However, with the Retina 5K screen, it doesn't matter. If the font size is too small, you can simply change the settings and get bigger font sizing. The setting will scale not just the fonts, but everything else on screen, so the sizing ratios remain constant.

However, it should be noted that on the iMac 27" 5K 2880p screen, the same font size is easier to read than on the iMac 27" 2.5K 1440p screen (same size), because of the increased text clarity.

BTW, I'm not that old, but I actually personally find the font size a touch small. However, I keep it at default settings because I'm still OK with it and I have an old iMac 27" 2560x1440 being used as an external monitor and I want to keep the sizing the same between the two screens.

I am having a similar experience as Jimbo2015.

Here is what happened:
  1. Ordered 23-Jun: 27 inch, 3.5GHz with 8GB ram and 512 SSD (Crucial ram to be added later).
  2. During ordering the expected delivery was between 01-July and 08-july
  3. As soon as I put in my credit card, delivery changed to 07-July to 14-July
  4. On 10-July, the delivery suddenly changed to 08-August to 15-August, a one month slip!
  5. I called Apple and spoke with "Ashley". At first she was not that helpful, but then said she had not seen that before, and asked if I would go on hold to see if she could change it to "two-day shipping". I was on hold for a long time. After 20 minutes the call dropped, but she did call me back. She said that the delivery would be moved up, and that I would get an immediate email telling me that the delivery would be from 04-August to 11-August, but that it would actually be moved up further and I should look for a second email with the closer delivery.
  6. On 12-July I did get the second email giving a delivery window from 31-July to 07-August. Sooner, but not very much.
  7. This morning 14-July I got another email saying that the order has shipped by "2 - 3 Business" and to expect delivery 19-July!
I can only conclude that the "feature" of Apple installation software, where it gives a wildly varying and mostly declining time to completion, such as a "60-minute" task at the start resulting in an actual 7 minute task, has infected the Apple build and delivery of product!

Continuation:
  1. Was expecting delivery on 19-Jul, as given in the details in my previous post.
  2. When I clicked on the "Track Shipment" and drilled down, it said to expected delivery on 16-July (which is Sunday).
  3. Clicking further into the UPS tracking system, they said it would be delivered by end of day on 17-July.
  4. It was in fact delivered today, 17-July.

Just ordered the following from the Swedish Apple Store:
- 27" iMac
- i7 4.2Ghz
- 8GB RAM
- Radeon Pro 575
- 512GB SSD

I'm gonna use it mainly for music production, so high GPU performance isn't needed. And 512GB SSD is nice to have for the future.

Same specs as mine, and I'm using it for the same reason :)

But today I checked the status of my order and it said that it is cancelled... frustrating. Ordered July 14th and said estimate time of arrival Aug 1-8, now I have to start all over

My 2015 5K was a refurb so it came with a 1TB SSD and 32GB of factory RAM even though I did not really need either. I expect I would be fine with the 512GB SSD but with the shipping delays, I decided to just get another 1TB (future-proofing if nothing else). Also ordered with 16GB since it is only $50 more than going quality third-party (none of whom have any in stock for 1-2 weeks) and that way it's covered under AppleCare. I've always ordered the i7 so decided to do so here, as well. Ordered today and should be here by week's end.

Ordered mine from Staples a couple of weeks ago and they said it could take up to two months!! Went with the i7/580/8GB/512SSD, main use will be music production with Logic Pro X. I wanted to go with a 1TB but it's just so expensive. I'll have to look at adding an external hard drive or ssd for more storage. I'm just hoping to get a random phone call by the end of the month... 2 months is such a long wait time.

Bah. As expected, they refused the free headphones for my MacBook:

Apple said:

Oh well, it seems I'm probably still on track for the free headphones for the iMac.

The sales rep I talked to Monday said they were really backed up on the headphones and it might be a week before they ship and I get an email. I had contacted them initially about a week ago to ask for the offer and they said I qualified. Guess I just have to be patient now... grr

My iMac is supposed to arrive next week but till now the status is still stuck at "Order in Progress". Sigh.. At the moment, can only enjoy the Beats Solo 3 wireless which delivers 1 day after I call them up.

I ordered my iMac on the June 26th. When I called about the headphones I was told I would qualify and would receive an email. I hope they honor what I was told on the phone and don't get an email from Apple saying I ordered my iMac a day early and don't qualify now.

Yup just got my shipping notification for my Solo 3 Beats. I received my iMac on June 27 and called them last week. But I didn't know if they'd accept or not they just sent it off and said you'll find out.

Woohoo!

You'll get it. That June 27 date is the RECEIVE date. I got my iMac June 28, and I just received my confirmation email for the Beats Solo3 just minutes ago. Delivery date estimated to be this Friday. Yay!

Beats Solo3 Wireless On-Ear Headphones - Black

---

BTW, the only reason I'm getting these is because I returned my original i7/580 and re-ordered the i5/575. My original i7 came weeks earlier, and would not have qualified.

I placed my order for a 27" iMac with 4.2ghz i7 and 512gb hard drive. The headphones show as preparing to ship, but the computer is expected between August 5 and the 12th. I'm hoping something closer to the 5th.
