I hope your 2017 iMac arrived OK - I ordered a virtually identical specification (apart from being the i7 4.2 Ghz processor) in Mid July and Apple are now saying "delivery delayed due to component shortage". Does anyone know what is going on with 'built to order' mid-2017 iMacs?

So what I think is happening is everyone is waking up and realizing that the iMac is crap with the fusion drive. So everyone is special ordering and it is getting them backed up. I ordered the 512 ssd and have a 30 day wait to get my order (still waiting). :( But will be worth it in the long run. Regardless, they are getting more requests for the 512 ssd than they have ssd's in stock.

Wife ordered a 27" 4.2 i7/8/512/580 on 7/28. Status changed to 'shipping to store' yesterday 8/4, with an ETA of 8/10. Was originally estimated to arrive 8/24.

FYI, in store pickups frequently arrive 2-3 days earlier that listed.

Actually, I think people are going with the SSD for down the road reliability/performance. I think the average Mid 2017 iMac customer is planning to keep it for a LONG time. A Fusion Drive easily meets the needs of any average home user. It won't last as long as the SSD however. I'm interested to track the life spans of the Mid 2017. I know I won't need to upgrade from mine for a LONG time. :apple:

So, I disagree. I got a 1tb fusion drive for the 27" and had to return. The overall performance of OS X was super slow. They only put 28gb of ssd on the computer and then it is running on a 7500 rpm disk (on the 21" it is a 5400 rpm disk..........). Which is VERY slow. An educated purchaser will know not to get the fusion drive. I don't do high end processing on my computer but I know that a spinning disk will slow down my overall experience. Especially coming from a MacBook Pro that only comes with SSD. I hope and would think that modern purchasers are using the internet to find reviews and read forums on the devices they are purchasing. Reading here and experiencing the slowness of the OS with a fusion drive drove me to return and get on a waiting list for an ssd drive. Apple seriously needs to retire the fusion drive. For anyone reading this forum post, get the SSD drive and wait it out. If Apple gets lots of demand for it they will stop having the fusion drive as an default option. You can't even get an SSD iMac off the shelf at apple at the moment. CRAZY

I guess we will have to travel in different directions at the fork in the road. ;)

I believe @ $200-300 for the mid 2017 27" line, it's the most popular all SSD BTO option, so there is a supply constraint.
One of the many reasons I chose a 1TB SSD, ordered on July 26th, arrived 7 days later, a day earlier than the "congratulations" notification.
Also looks like the 512GB BTO's are being built in China, while mine shipped from California...

These delays are just ridiculous. I heard someone else got compensation, but that was for weeks of delay if I remember correct
The sales advisors issue appeasements on a case by case basis.
I would suggest you respectfully make a good case for the delay causing you some inconvenience, you may be pleasantly surprised.
Without asking, the offered me $120 appeasement.
I self installed Crucial 32GB RAM upgrade straight out of the box, and apparently did not completely seat one of the sticks.
It appeared to all my new iMac was DOA, so they immediately authorized replacement, and the extra goodies

I couldn't wait any longer and bought one off the shelf. 3.8gHz, 8GB RAM (added another 8GB), 580GPU, 2TG Fusion Drive. Been using it for three days. No regrets. I thought the FD would be slow, but it's not at all. Boot time is clocked at 22.4 sec. and apps are as fast as my 12" MacBook.

I thought 512 ssd systems were shipping faster in the last week or so? Did they hit another shortage? I'm about to order an i7, 580, 512 system and really don't want to wait a month. I would go with 1tb ssd if it were just a bit cheaper. It's just so blatantly over-priced that I can't bring myself to do it.

I was the same. Nearly did the 1TB to get it sooner. But Jesus, such a markup on price. Looks like maybe I got in on a window where the had decent 512gb availability, and seems my order will only take around 10-14 days to get.

Can't believe Apple is still selling computers with traditional rotating "fusion" hard drives!
[doublepost=1502039736][/doublepost]BTW my iMac is been shipped from Shanghai China through DHL. It departed Thursday 08/03. Still no estimated delivery date.

I spent a lot of time reading and researching Fusion Drive vs. SSD. For my use, stored music files and non speed essential storage paying for super fast SSD doesn't make sense. Now that I am using the 2TB FD, I have no regrets. It's plenty fast for my use.

Awesome!! I think the ssd is the drive we all should have. But I disagree with the fusion drive as a concept in 2017. Great in 2013.

Yayyyyayaya mac is going to be here in two days!!!!

And the only reason they were a recommendable option back in 2013 was the exorbitant prices and smaller size of SSDs at the time.

With the connectivity offered by the 2017 iMac, one never wants for inexpensive ways to add spinning storage drives externally.

Besides the noise, extra heat, extra power consumption and slower speeds associated with the HDD components of Fusion Drives, they all eventually fail. If that happens while still under AppleCare it's no problem but otherwise get ready to either perform open Mac surgery to replace it yourself or pay Apple $400+ to do so out of warranty.

I have a two-drive JBOD USB3 cradle with two 3TB HDDs in it that's all I currently need for music, photo storage and backup purposes. If one fails, I pull it out and replace it. I'm thinking of investing in an inexpensive 2-drive RAID enclosure USB3.1 for them.

On a Late 2013 iMac I recently sold with a 1TB Fusion Drive, the HDD failed in October of last year with only one month left of AppleCare. Of course Apple replaced the HDD with a new one for free. But when I shipped the iMac to the person I sold it to, the stand hinge broke during shipping. This is a common problem on that era iMac and Apple repairs it for free under a recall program so the buyer sent it in to Apple. While running tests on the machine after fixing the hinge, Apple advises the guy that the HDD (replaced BY Apple last October) was showing errors on tests and likely to fail, now 7 months out of AppleCare. At first they told the guy they were going to charge $400 for parts and labor which the two of us decided to split half and half. However, by some miracle Apple called him back about 4 days later and told him because of some delays in repair on their part they did the HDD replacement free of charge this time. whew

All of this made me all the happier that my new iMac has no spinning drives. Never again for me.

I ordered a 27 inch, i7, 512 SSD, 8RAM, Radeon 580 on July 15 and the shipping date has been moving like crazy without notice.
First it said it would ship from July 29 to the 31st, then August 12 to 15, now it says August 8 to 11. It's already being shipped by UPS but it's been stated as "Export Scan" in Shanghai since last Wednesday so I seriously doubt it will make it on time since it still has to arrive to Alaska and then to Mexico City, where I live (if they don't ship it to Kansas first or something like that) o_O

Ordered i5 3.8, Radeon 580, 512 SSD on 31-Jul. Got the Message today that it has shipped and delivery expected 11-Aug to Denmark. The original expexted delivery date was 16-Aug to 21-Aug.

Will insert extra 16GB RAM to get 24GB in total.

It will be my first ever imac so I am quite excited :)

It seems that I will receive my Imac today 07-Aug. It is currently out on delivery so I am waiting for it to arrive just now. The delivery has been much faster than originally expected. Great!

Ordered on Thursday 10th of August:

  • 4.2GHZ QC I7, TB UP TO 4.5GHZ
  • 8GB 2400MHZ DDR4 - 2X4GB
  • 2TB FUSION DRIVE (128GB FLASH)
  • AMD RADEON PRO 580 W/8GB VRAM
  • Apple Magic Mouse 2
  • MAGIC KYBD+USER'S GUIDE-N
  • COUNTRY KIT-Z
Will be here: 11-15 August. Let's hope they will PFS soon!

Most likely from demand. Usually, depending on your global address BTO's are assembled in Cork, Ireland and Fremont, Ca. The demand for the 2017 iMac has been off the chart. Q4 Mac sales should be quite the event. ;)

Had a similar experience with a used MacBook the wife bought many years ago.
It was one there was a battery recall for, so as we were @ the Genius Bar addressing that, a diagnostic showed drive issues, which we agreed to pay for. A few days later was notified because of delays, the repair would be free....
One of the many reasons I continue to patronize Apple, top notch customer service. Although it may be frustrating at times, with a bit of patience and tenacity, I always feel well taken care of.

Ordered 3.8 / 512 GB / 480 Pro yesterday, Aug 3rd. Did ship to store. Initially was saying would arrive Aug 25th, they just updated it to Aug 18th. Chose trackpad and numeric keyboard.

Looks like the 512GB SSD shortage is easing.

Well, just got an email today that it is ready for pickup at the store! Amazing, ordered Aug 3rd, delivered to store 5 days later. Way sooner than I expected!

Are they inside own shipping carton or regular retail packaging when pick up at Apple Store ?

I always like getting with carton in case shipping some day in future like if selling.

I got the the regular Apple box when picking up from Apple Store. You might be able to ask them for a box.
