If rootless is on, are you supposed to be able to do this?

So Terminal has some new choices for Window options, and given Tab options a separate section.

Also, is anyone else unable to upload attachments using the new Safari (Plug-in Failure)? I had to upload the images with Firefox...

I really welcome the changes to the Toolbar buttons. The gradient and the darker gray outline makes it look like a more clickable UI element.

Also San Francisco is much better at kerning.

This seems like a step backward to be honest (in terms of flatness). I also hope they fix the alignment as it's completely off.

running it since yesterday. i definitely feel a huge speed improvement. and i had that exact same thought you had. with el capitan my macbook feels like a real powerful machine now. everything runs fast and smooth. (even with beta 1!!) iTunes and my huge song collection open up instantly. sure there's a bug here and there. but i think you are exactly right. this might be the reason for the new macbook. and part of the future for portable computers. (they've shown the new macbook nearly in every pic and demo for el cap)
sure it makes the pro macs even better. but i think 10.11 is really noticeable on th 12 inch.
However, what I notice is the complete opposite side of the experience. I upgrade my Yosemite to El Capitan. I can use most noted features, but system performance is horrible, plus battery life is horrible as well.
I know a clean install could solve many problems, but that requires me to do a backup. I am still waiting for a suitable budget backup hard disk.
And, Yosemite clean install does not solve some problems either!

I agree, though I hope they increase the contrast slightly.

Yeah, I'm really impressed with San Francisco overall, it's like a softer/rounder Helvetica Neue. Fortunately this change isn't as severe as Lucida Grande to H'Neue.
My only issue with SF is I really hate the numbers for some reason.

Check Activity Monitor, sort by CPU and see what Processes use all your CPU. I can only imagine that something is running in circles on your machine...

Uh, the only thing using the most CPU is activity monitor itself when I check it now. Currently performance is normal. However the graphic card works not properly in this beta. In Microsoft Word preview, most of the app interface will become black if I search something in document. If I just scroll, it is OK. If i want to select something, selected area becomes completely black.

Ok I guess something with the driver for your card is broken in this release then. I'm on the MacBook and like that other guys said, it really flies... It is better than Yosemite by a very noticeable amount... I guess you'll have to wait for a few more beta releases.

I have rushed to this very early prototype beta, on my previous damn Yosemite. I really hate the stability and usability of Yosemite. I hope the upcoming beta of El capitan could make it better than Yosemite. I just want to throw it back to the dust bin as soon as I can.

Runs wonderfully so far. I used to get GPU glitches all the time in Yosemite -- artifacts all over the screen, whenever the 750M kicked in on a Cocoa app. Hasn't happened since installing El Cap.

Really? I actually think it looks really slick. It adds a touch of realness to the OS like drop shadows but doesn't overdo it like Mountain Lion and earlier did.

I guess it's just a difference in opinion on design. I don't want realness in a UI, I don't even know what that means. I just prefer flat buttons. I was hoping with El Capitan they would continue making all the remaining rounded buttons flat, not the opposite.

For example the flat "edit" button in notification center looks much better than the rounded ones in my opinion.

So is Apple telling developers to use this for their apps in El Capitan?

Yes, they've started telling all devs to do this a few years ago, this is nothing new. ARC was developed to replace the pervious memory management system, not to co-exist with it.

The whole "Rootless" shenanigan is pretty foreboding. If they make this feature difficult to disable (which requires an NVRAM boot argument even in a release specifically targeted at developers), it won't be long until we can't disable it at all and, quite frankly, it would kill OS X.

No, it's not going to kill OS X. 99% of the users using OS X doesn't care because they don't do anything that modifies the system files and the ones that do reports instability. The whole point of rootless is to ensure stability.

You don't like it, feel free to move to a different UNIX OS that respects your right to total control over your system. Apple has moved away from this many years ago, especially when they stop updating GPL-based CLI apps and forked their own instead.

I don't consider my Mac a computer anymore if I can't do something at the root level, which is the highest level of permission you can have on a UNIX system.

Then install your own OS, Apple never cared about catering to folks who wants total control of their system. Why do you think they stopped bothering with workstation hardware and powerful software meant for pros?

OS X is supposed to be a full featured advanced operating system, and locking it down as if it was a mobile device is absurd. If people want to use an iPhone or iPad they use an iPhone or iPad... that's why they exist. Beating OS X into a soulless, marginally more useful version of iOS is just insulting.

Rootless will ensure the general public doesn't install tools that modifies the system files which almost always brings instability to the system. Apple is catering to the public, not power users like you. They've stopped caring for power users several years ago. Advanced OS is just a marketing, not a promise.

Wow. Okay. I didn't think this new 'rootless' thing was that bad...

It's not, it's a great thing for the general public who just wants a stable OS.

Even Microsoft doesn't allow its users to modify the system files.

No, no, of course. It's great for the public and for me 99% of the time. However, it feels like it's just a matter of time until we can't even disable it with a command. I do not like the thought of that happening.
