My OS X 10.10.1 freezes forever

Hi,

I purchased my MBP in September 2014. I upgraded it to Yosemite on december 4th, since then, 1 of every 10 times I start Java (and some other applications such as WebEx) the computer freezes.

I can still move the mouse, but the computer is frozen. No answer from any button, no messages in window or console and no response even if I let the computer alone for hours. Even more, if I close the MBP the white apple symbol keeps white with light turned on and it does not goes to sleep mode so it is not responding to any interruption.

I've to press the power button for 5 seconds, wait until power off and then restart the system.

I'm a Java developer so this happens about 10 times a day. This Op System is worst than Windows 98 days! I've never seen an Op system that can be frozen just starting an application.

I don't blame Oracle because even in the worst case scenario, an application should not hang the operating system. This looks like a deadlock inside the kernel or something like that.

Any hint will be appreciated

Cheers
Ignacio

I have a rMBP13 late 2013 model that came with Mavericks.
I clean installed 10.10 because there were several bugs after updating. Now I'm on 10.10.1 (with all the updates).

The stupid Notification thing keeps popping up with calendar events that I don't even sync, such as birthday and holiday reminders. I have to snooze it every time those pops up. Very annoying.

Sometimes the Downloads icon next to the trash can on the task bar freezes and makes it look like it's trying to download something forever until I reboot.

Sometimes I see location service frozen in task manager, even though I completely disabled location services from system preference.

Once in a while, I can't power it off. I have to hold the power key for 10 seconds to force shut off. This is happening more lately.

Preview freezes time by time. WTF...

Do I need to do another clean install with 10.10.1? Everything seemed to work perfectly fine with Mavericks except when I connect Cinema Display (USB + Displayport) sometimes the laptop keyboard and touchpad died. Now after 10.10 it's all a mess, I feel OSX is just as unstable as Windows now.

Unexpected notifications for birthdays

… Notification thing keeps popping up with calendar events that I don't even sync, such as birthday and holiday reminders. …

That's not specific to Yosemite.

Do you use Facebook and if so, it is set to use calendars?

1) What do the console logs indicate
2) If you listen to iTunes radio and the system hangs, does the current song finish and not continue to the next song?
The console shows:

BUG in process suhelperd[XXX]: over-released legacy external boost assertions (1 total, 1 external, 0 legacy-external)

thousands of times...

Regarding the second question, I've no answer yet. I'm going to start itunes radio and come back to this thread later with a response.

Thanks for the responses. BTW, the console shows also messages about other bugs regarding 10.10.1, but they could be solved as the Op System is not frozen.

found nothing in the search, that's why...

... I want to ask why the volume control in iTunes is replaced by the airplay icon when you scale down the window size?!

WIFI FOR GOD's SAKE!!!! I swear I lose count on how many times the wifi in my MacBook Pro stops. It's so bad that it knocks the router offline and even my iPhone and iPad lose wifi. I have to unplug the router and plug it back in.

And yes, it's the same MacBook Pro and same iPad and same router that I had before Yosemite, just a new iPhone 6 Plus now. It's so bad, that I am using my Windows box right now.

I have been told that this statement does not refer to anything that the end user has to worry about.

I've had the opposite experience. On Yosemite, my WiFi works better than it ever had before. It rarely drops now whereas it used to drop several times an hour.

I just installed Yosemite 10.10, and I am not able to copy and paste. Neither "Command C and Command V", nor hitting edit and copy works. Anyone else having this problem, and is there a fix?

Never had this issue but if I did I would check Finder/Edit/Show Clipboard to see if anything is getting copied to the clipboard.

I also have this and countless other messages in the system.log.

They're probably caused by the fact that the developers didn't have enough time to clean up and finish everything. The software update part is quite buggy, including the App Store application and probably the system demons associated with it.

Try disabling Airdrop on your Apple devices. I was pulling my hair out trying to pair Withings scale with my Airport ac. Turned off bluetooth headsets, anything I can think of that could cause interference and it didn't work. Even my old iPhone 4 couldn't connect to Airport. Then I remembered the article on Airdrop/Yosemite https://medium.com/@mariociabarra/w...t-yosemite-wifi-and-awdl-airdrop-41a93eb22e48

I've turned off Airdrop on my iPhone 6 & ipad mini 2 and the "interference" disappeared. Airdrop/Bonjour over WiFi knocks the wireless out.

More Java fun...!

You are running the latest version of Java 8.25 ?

I am having an issue. When I updated to OS X Yosemite, I was unaware that Java 8.25 had been pulled from their download page to massage a bug from that version. Since my 'puter was running 10.10, the OS would't run anything prior to 8.25. When they posted the bug-free version of 8.25, I let their site verify that 8.25 was installed. But the OS is throwing alerts at me that Java is not installed so not Java content is running. Reinstalling Java didn't help, nor did my attempt to find every Java file & clean installing Java v8.25. Still getting the OS alerts & even Java is confused because I received an alert that a new version was available v8.25... grrrr. Any thoughts ?

No, I don't use any social networking stuff. I hate those things so I have all of them disabled. I think I might have disabled this now by opening Calendars, and right click the calendar I want to disable - "info" - check "ignore alerts".

Another bug, I disabled location service completely, but the stupid com.apple.geod keeps freezing on its own. I don't even use Apple Maps, and I turned off "find my i-device", so I don't know what the issue is. This is after a clean install of 10.10.1. This feels like Windows all over again.. I reinstalled everything during the holidays. I didn't even install MS Office 2011 or any Acrobat software anymore just in case. I do have Parallels 8 installed though.

This is almost a bare bone OS right now, and it's sad to still see all these glitches. I couldn't control keyboard backlight the other night, but magically it came back alive after a standby-resume.

I believe you need Parallels 9.5 for it to work with Yosemite.

Right Side Menu Issues - Yosemite

Had anyone else had issues with the right side of the menu bar (time machine volume would not appear even after selected in system preference). Also, the clock would freeze in time and catching up only when spotlight checks every four or five minutes...during that time the whole right side of the menu bar would disappear...reappearing after the spotlight check completed.

I had that happening to me on an 2012 Mac Mini with a Samsung 840 Pro SSD...screen shared with Apple enterprise support team who claimed kernel panic upon seeing it. I downgraded to Mavericks, right after.

Forgive my ignorance, but how do you turn off airdrop?

I can't go for more than 10 minutes without losing wifi. I'm close to downgrading back to Mavericks.

If the cursor still moves, then your Mac hasn't frozen.

More likely, Java is badly broken and it's retaining your keyboard input so you can't quit it. Have you tried CMD-ALT-ESC to see if the force quit window might appear?

Tried reinstalling Java? - https://www.java.com/en/download

iTunes sync bug in 10.10.2 Beta

I upgraded to the .2 Beta. Ever since then, I cannot sync my iPod Classic or my Nano. iTune simply doesn't see them. I can sync my iPhone and iPad, but only over WiFi. Anyone else seeing this behavior?

Interesting. As far as the wifi issues go, I have been using Chrome for a few hours and not one loss of wifi. Seems to happen constantly using Safari and Omniweb. I haven't tried Firefox yet.

Yosemite is great:
on my iMac I keep losing my cursor until I click on a (presumed) safe spot,
my macBook has a confused updates list: some items double, some missing:
for instance, the NTP security update of Dec 23. I'm sure it was installed on both machines but on the macbook the Appstore/Updates doesn't show it.
Is such an update visible somewhere?

And ...... waiting for 10.10.2 or more ..... oops that's more updates!
;JOOP!

The continuity features is a bit flaky for me, especially when i get a phone call, i usually answer on my iPhone but after i answer it keeps ringing on my Yosemite computers, sometime it keeps ringing on my computers even though i have answered on my iPhone, speaking for several minutes and hanged up a long time ago. I can't press decline on the computers either before hanging up on the iPhone because then my conversation terminates on the iPhone to so yeah, kinda annoying.
