When I eventually upgrade to a new Mac, I plan on bringing forward the Highpoint SSD7101a in a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure. Hopefully the mac pro aesthetics will help to make up for the drop in performance from PCIe 2.0 x16 to thunderbolt 3.
It will work nicely.I'm planning to install an EVO970 in this on my CMP 5.1 with bootrom 140.00
Aqua Computer kryoM.2 evo PCIe 3.0 x4 Adapter für M.2 NGFF PCIe SSD, M-Key mit Passivkühler
The PCIcard is cheap but looks good. It's a first step: my 2 x16 lanes are occupied with 2 GPU's, so no place for the time being for bigger card.
Any comments?
Don't matter what slot you install, a non-switched card will always be limited by PCIe 2.0 4 lanes = ~1500MB/s.always this card:

into Slot-1 at what speed will it go?

Your SSD was made to use 4 lanes, no? If you install into a 16 lanes slot, it will work faster?let me get this right, if i use a nvme to pcie 3.0 x 16 adapter with a super fast nvme and stick it in the pcie 2.0 x 16 slot, it will still get locked at ~1500MB/s?

Switched cards, like HighPoint SSD7101A or Amfeltec Squid 3.0, that can transform 16x PCIe 2.0 into 4x PCIe 3.0 for multiple M.2 blades.what is the point of a nvme to pcie x16

It's just for show, a 4x M.2 blade can't use more than the lanes that it was made to.there are x16 adapters on amazon whose only function is to connect it to one m.2 ssd
Why spend so much? It´s not going to be faster than in a few bucks adapter.I'm planning to install an EVO970 in this on my CMP 5.1 with bootrom 140.00

Just one word: quality. Chinese ones are junk when you compare with an Angelbirds Wings PX1 or an Aqua Computer kryoM.2 evo.Why spend so much? It´s not going to be faster than in a few bucks adapter.

You should go to the first post and read it, it's already answered there.
Hi. There seems to be some conflicting reports
Sorry Tsialex, I think I may have got it confused with another model that is not supported and my knowledge on this area isn’t great.
So just so I can be sure before purchasing, I would not have to do anything to the 970 Pro SSD other than install it along with the Lycom adapter, in order for it work in Mojave and be able to boot from it on a Mac Pro 2012?
Did you already upgraded your Mac Pro to BootROM 140.0.0.0.0? If not, you will need to, it's the first firmware to support NVMe native boot. You can read about it into the first posts of these two threads:
Btw, buy a PCIe M.2 adaptor that have a good heatsink, 970 Pro generates lots of heat and you will definitively need a adapter with a heatsink.
Check your BootROM, SystemInformation / Hardware Overview/ BootROM version, if you upgraded before 10.14.1 you have 138.0.0.0.0. Only 140.0.0.0.0 supports NVMe boot. Thanks Tsialex. No I haven’t yet upgraded the BootROM, I wasn’t aware that was required, but thank you for mentioning. So just so I am understanding correctly, the NVME native boot support does not come automatically with the upgrade to latest Mojave? This will need to be done separately first in High Sierra, before upgrading to Mojave?
Yes, no doubt. Aqua Computer kryo2 Evo is a good one too. Thanks for the tip on the adaptor with a good heatsink. So I’m thinking the Angelbird PX1 PCIe 3.0 x4 adapter for PCIe M.2 might be a better option than the Lycom DT-120 adaptor?
