Oh god don't mention the Voigtlanders! I've spent most of the day trying to convince myself that I can afford a Nokton 50mm 1.5 for my Fuji XE1.....failing miserably and then looking at the 40mm 1.4 MC again instead. I've got a Heliar 15mm and it renders so beautifully that I feel that I really "need" another Voigtlander in my collection.

The 50/1.5 is the way to go I think IMHO. The 40 is nice but you have the Fuji XF covering close to that focal length.

Hold out for the 50/1.5 it will be worth it would be my thoughts - but you know i am daft and have all the gear but no idea...

I'm thinking the same thing. The 40 isn't much of a difference from my 35 and I've also got a 45mm. Going to have to sell some lenses to free up space and funds methinks.

No putting yourself down fella! You once told me that was everyone else' job when I did it, so let us all carry the burden of criticising you ;)

There are folks around with all the gear and less idea than you, that's for sure.

Wherever I hang my hat...
Beautiful photo, I love this scene. You do find interesting places! You must do plenty of research before you move on to the next town.

Thank you. I have a few books in my camper that help me to organise my photography. I'd like to say I do a bit of research every night, about what I might shoot the next day, but, in truth, I'm not as organised as I should be...

No, don't put yourself down, you're getting way ahead of me :)

I spent ages trying to get this cow to look at me. He seemed more interested in his grass.

You've captured the fun element of the photo perfectly. It conveys the emotion of two friends larking about very well.

Thanks! On film no less (making it a bit harder in my books, but I like a challenge!)

For your cow shot I would have upped the exposure a little. The subject is the cow and for me anything with eyes should have them nice and obvious.

How is the camping going? I'm getting more and more fed up with 'normal life' and feel like a spontaneous travelling trip is on the cards.

Probably not the yorkshire dales and the like but a similar idea of getting out and having no fixed abode for a while!

No, don't put yourself down, you're getting way ahead of me :)

Forgive me if you're not looking for feedback.

Maybe it's just personal taste but it's a great expression but the tones come off a little flat. It's a sea of greys with no real black or whites.

My dad was a photographer back in the day and we have loads of prints on the walls from the days of tri-x with great deep blacks and punchy whites so maybe I'm used to a different style.

Pretty annoyed with my scanner at the mo. I can't get the colours right at all so over the weekend I threw a hissy fit and converted them all to B&W. Makes dealing with colours a lot easier! Plus I can add all my colour filters in post ;)

As always, comments appreciated.

Thank you kindly for your encouragement.

Even more so, with a 45mm I think the 40mm would be a waste. Strangely though, the 50mm would be different enough.

I had a Contax 45mm Tessar and it was razor sharp, gorgeous pancake lens, lovely, overpriced now but 50 always felt different enough to it.

I will say though, and please take notice of this, honest moment... I have spent a fortune on the Leicas and other lenses along the way and honestly... the difference is subtle, it is there but not THAT much that I can hand on heart and say it is worth the extra money.

For what it is worth, I think the images you produce in particular are fantastic and I doubt you will get that step change you hope for.

Thanks for the reply. I get what you mean with the differences between only minor. For me I'm missing a really good manual 50 as the Jupiter lens I have is pretty soft wide open and isn't a great performer. I figured that if I'm going for one I may as well make it a good un.

Plus there's an element of GAS in there as any hobby dictates ;)

As for my pictures - there's always room for improvement.

100% with you on this comment.

The same is true of me with film and my Hasselblad. So many times I wish I had just brought my 6d and not bothered with it, or I think of all the money I could save just shooting digital.

But then occasionally there is a shot that I wouldn't be able to recreate with my 6D and it makes me realise that it's worth it.

It's also the experience of shooting with it that is so different. It's really pleasurable and no option of chimping means that you actually enjoy the moment rather than living your live through the 3in monitor on the back of your camera!

Skill comes into as well as I know that I have completely crafted the image which gives an extra layer of achievement.

Always shoot for yourself not for anyone else. Maybe my shots would be better shot solely on digital, but that's certainly not as fun for me!

Yes I fully agree, it's too flat.
I've gone back and quickly added some contrast - better?

Better! My one suggestion would never to be 'add contrast' as I believe this does this linearly to the whole photo.

If you are using LR my favourite way to make a start with the blacks and whits is to drag the whites and blacks on the histogram BUT hold down ALT whilst your doing it.

The screen will turn black and as you slide will slowly start to show you when respective pixels are turning pure white or pure black (depending on adjusting one or the other). Once something is pure white/black slide it back a little (to ensure no clipping) and then make your other adjustments.

This helps me ensure that most of my shots are using the full tonal range.

What was your dad into?

My Dad worked under Eugene Vernier (vogue photographer) before catching his own break!

Not greatly good at editing yet, so I applied the contrast globally for quickness sake.

My dad was into everything really, mostly B&W with his darkroom in the loft.
I still have his 1950s Lordomat which I keep meaning to run a film through for old times sake. I'm not sure, ISO 100 or 200 film? B&W I think when I get round to it.
He wasn't a pro, but was shown at local exhibitions, so when I said of some repute I only meant locally. He died in 1989 so missed anything digital.
I've re-photographed a lot of his prints and put them up at the bottom of my Flikr.

Your dad has obviously passed his skills on :) - mine would be in despair

Cheers :)

Funnily enough I also had a crack at a "selfie" of Me and Mrs MacRy last year in a very similar setting and I didn't like the output from mine either. Early days of using off camera flash for me. I'm sure I could do better now with a few months under my belt.

Cheese&Apple: I don't want to get dinged for multiple posts so I'll add this here. Very smart editing on the owl pic.

Thanks Dale.

The move to Lr wasn't quite as intimidating as I thought it would be. The concepts are really all the same as with Aperture...there just seems to be a whole lot more that can be done (if someone chooses) when you combine Lr with Ps.

I also think these applications are getting more intuitive. They are certainly easier to learn with the wealth of free video tutorials that are available these days. I cringe when I think about the days of pouring through volumes of user manuals in print.

I quite like this one MacRy. For a posed shot (not normally my thing) it has a very genuine and honest feel. I hope you're thinking of framing this one.

Also, for a real good 50, consider the Leica Summicron-R, not surprisingly, I have one of those too and it is real sharp and real easy to focus.

Bit more bulky than an M though.

I miss my 100-400 EF :-(

A7 ii is the image stabilization good on the FD? I fancy an upgrade from my mk i...

The 100-400 is too damn heavy, honestly. Now that I've gone all light and small, I can only take it out for birds/wildlife and similar (on the 6D). Otherwise it stays at home and may end up sold soonish.

The IBIS (in body stabilization) on the A7mk2 is fantastic. It's the main reason I was finally convinced to switch over to Sony. It works on all lenses (non Sony included, old MF lenses too). You set the focal length in the menu for non native lenses (which can be a bit of a hassle, if you keep swapping lenses). Native lenses it's all automatic, obviously. I've used it on my Canon lenses. I've used it on the FD50 and even more importantly on the Vivitar 135/2.8 (at those longer FLs, stabilization helps immensely when trying to manually focus).

Funny you mention the 15mm Heliar. It's the next item on my list. The 40 Nokton I've used was a friend's and I only had it for one afternoon, but was very impressed. That's a focal range that I don't need ASAP (well covered by my 24-70 or similar for now). On fullframe, at least. I will want a 35mm or 40mm prime at some point. But there are MANY excellent choices in that focal range.
The 15mm on the other hand is a trickier FL to get right. So I'm very happy to hear your Heliar renders nicely. Do you have any samples (or a Flickr link)? I'd love to take a look at more shots from it.

Finally, went shooting on Saturday, on a rare cloudy day here in SoCal.

You just hit the nail on the head why all my Canon gear went. I never took it anywhere with me. My A7 however gets out and sees the sights a bit more.

Packing range finder lenses in my bag as opposed to Canon bazookas is great!

I am geting an A7ii by the look of it.. :-(
