Have you ever experienced that dilemma where you had to choose between the shot that you envisioned and the shot that is looking pretty good along the way to it? This photo was the product of just such a decision. You can read the whole story here.

You did good!

Thanks James. I'm not sure which is my favourite from the series. I like the sail in isolation and because it's different the drone with the sun.
Having somewhere nice to shoot and the motivation to get up early and go there certinly helps. And it's much easier to do when you've just dropped a few grand on equipment!

Thanks, guys -- for a second there, I thought you were on to my collection of model birds. I thought for sure that these would lead to a string of Monty Python references. :)

You're making me a little nostalgic about my time at sea, Fcortese. Is this a Knox-class frigate?

Spot on, MCH. I was on the USS Ainsworth which in 1974 was initially classified as a destroyer escort (DE-1090). In 1975 she was reclassified as a fast frigate and changed to FF 1090.

Woah! hang on, ARE these models? No this is ruining my fascination with the pictures now... please dont say they are just models!

MacRy, thanks for the info on the watch shoot. Gonna try something like that soon. Just never really bothered with lighting and products, but currently feeling uninspired on landscapes, so gonna bring it indoors and do something different. :)

Wonderful photo of a beautiful scene, Phrasikleia -- sometimes spontaneity rules the day.

Very cool -- that must have been one of its last deployments before decommissioning.

You figured me out. It's only a model. That's why I prefer to shoot hummingbirds -- the collection requires much less room to store than other, larger birds would. ;)

No, I assure you that they are all real. The wing blur in this one results from the ambient (as opposed to flash) exposure.

This is an absolutely stunning shot. Beautiful!

Gorgeous. Would look great on the wall...

Thanks, guys! I can't believe how long I sat on that shot before processing and releasing it (nine months). I only went looking for it because I'll be teaching a photography workshop in that area and needed some shots to show off the relevant scenery. I'm like the photographer equivalent of a hoarder!

I have been known to go back looking at photos I shot back in 2009 (When I first picked up a camera). I think my Hard Drive still has every single shot I've ever recorded.
It's probably dumb. I know for a fact there are tons of shots there that cannot be salvaged and have zero redeeming quality. But the "You never know" in me kicks in.

This little guy was barking up a storm right outside my office. I guess his human tethered him to the bench while they ran inside a store... I'm kinda bummed that I cut off his tail, but I am happy with the way the tones turned out.

Have shot this subject (and posted) before. Went back again today to do it again.

Power Plant in Providence, RI.

This time:

Nikon 45mm PC-E shifted up on a leveled tripod head to maintain perspective on the stacks and buildings. Converted to B&W with Silver Efex Pro to darken the sky and lighten the bricks (wasn't happy with what I was getting in Lightroom).

Best one so far I think! Just need some uber clouds now for another bit of variation! ha

Just landed back from holiday and have a serious case of the holiday blues. Oh well.

Work hard and play hard so now I will have to knuckle down.

As always, comments appreciated!
