Some fabulous skies on here recently and some gifted photographers making the most of them!

Had a day in London on Thursday taking photos. It was lovely when I set out but soon turned very grey and gloomy. This is a reflection of the building known as The Shard.

I could see that next to two more hanging in a line in my kitchen.... lovely effect. See i have the eye of a techie. I struggle to visualise things so when i can see and imagine something like this, i think it is the highest compliment i can give if that makes sense.

Thanks, kenoh. The majority of my photography is about helping to develop my eye. Personally, I straddle the line between techie thinking and creative seeing. I am lucky to be at the stage where I can think about what I want the image to look like before hitting the shutter button. Then you can use the light to your advantage through metering and focus for that particular image. I always shoot in manual for full control. Whether I get what I envisioned or not is all part of the learning curve, I suppose. I'm still a relative newbie that's been playing the photography lark for two years now. ;)

These last few images were an experiment in what I could create at f/2.8. Playing with the focal plane really, which in turn helps me to become more creative with my tilt-shift lens. Not that I share many of those images.

Ish, that has to be the best image I have seen of the shard, thus far!

The horizon of the sea should be a good one; that'll give you the true horizon and set the structure upright. I wonder what would happen if you then use the 'upright' tool in LR5 (if you have LR5?). It may sort out the cloud/horizon wedge thingy you've got going on :)

Alex

The ocean horizon is the one to go by, usually.
That's what I do on almost all my shots that involve ocean and clouds.
I say almost because, well, there are a few exceptions (usually involving a pier jutting out at an odd angle).

Yeah that’s the one that I went for but it’s ever so annoying that the beach and therefore hut are slightly at a different angle. Then the line of the clouds doesn’t help anyone!

This one makes the horizon a bit more clear for straightening purposes! This was probably the best morning I have had all year/all time. Got down to the beach for sunrise, got in the sea and just watched the sun creep over the horizon whilst I enjoyed the warm atlantic ocean. Stayed in that water for about 20 mins and didn’t feel cold once!

As always, comments appreciated.

I'm so glad I'm not alone with my OCD tendencies for order in my imagery! ;)

I'm dead jealous! The waters here are probably sitting at a lovely temperature of 10 C... Wonderful colours and a great sense of depth or dimension with those clouds.

You are great at nailing focus. Do you zone focus or try for critical? Well done[COLOR="#

Thanks :) I usually try for critical. Occasionally I have a go at zone focussing though. Usually more so on my MF lenses.

My 1st attempt at using the in camera HDR. Not happy about the composition but kids were running around and didn't have much time. Anyhow, in camera HDR is pretty cool and a lot less work than using tripods and PS. :)

Spring is on the way! This is a new season pear flower, using the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro lens at f/2.8. Post-production for this and most of my previous images is in Lightroom from raw images, without the use of any add-on packs or presets. I have NIK and Topaz's B&W add-ons, but never fire them up any more and I prefer not to use any of the inbuilt presets that Lightroom offers, instead having control of the images outcome myself. I'm a self-confessed control freak...

Thank you for the kind comment! I meant to comment on your striking pear blossom photo. I like the square format and the black and white really suits it and brings out the detail of the flower. It's one of those photos that wouldn't be half as imposing in colour and the background sets it off perfectly.

What a beautiful sunrise! I was surprised to see how near the people appear in the photo. If they hadn't been there I'd have thought that part of the scene was much further away. Did you use a very low viewpoint?

Don't worry, coming from the cold north-east Atlantic (is that a thing) I was really shocked to see how warm the see can actually be!

Thanks for the comments.

Nope, pretty sure I was standing or maybe stooping a little! I'd say the only thing that maybe sets it apart is the fact that I used a 35mm for something that people usually go wider on.

It's annoying because I wish I had had my 50mm or 85mm with me as I think it would have offered up an interesting alternative.

When I was shooting some flowers in the garden this little guy popped in. I tried to get closer (only had the 60 mm on) but he left.
I'm off work the rest of today, but that weather is pretty shocking for August. Rain, rain and more rain.

Have you tried cropping in? The picture is only presented here at 800px which gives a lot of room for cropping! It might also help get rid of the leaf that's slightly had its time top left!

To be honest, I didn't think the focus was sharp enough to take it in any tighter than it was. But I do agree that leaf is not the best. Mind you it's my garden, so most of the things are past their best!

Tell me about it! I had the day off and thought I'd just "pop down" to Chessington to pick up a vintage amp for a separates setup I'm putting together to play all of my old indie vinyl I've got laying around. Chessington is 62 miles away from my house via the M1 and M25 and it was a four hour round trip! Most...depressing....drive.....ever.

I'm off to Essex tomorrow for a couple of days to visit the parents. Hope the weather is kind and I can fit in some photography.

Not a brilliant photo but just had to show off part of my latest purchase.

Love the colours. Have you considered it as an iPhone wallpaper.

Seems perfect to split the constant apps at the bottom with all the others.

Thanks! And yes - as soon I took it I know it'd be a good wallpaper style of photo. I had to add a little bit of black to the bottom to get all my apps in but it's looking pretty tidy now.

I do :) I've just put together a vintage separates system for all of the old vinyl I have laying around.

Very nice. I gave up on music for a while. Cant win against 2 girls and my wife. Everytime I go to the music system it had the Frozen soundtrack on it! Let it go, do you want to build a snowman and all that jazz.

So how about a macro shot of a needle in the groove?
