Just realized I never posted anything for today's POTD!
This is a pretty photo, but man, do I hate this plant. It is horribly invasive, particularly in Virginia. My neighbor had two "volunteers" that she never planted and grow right at the fence line (like literally between fence slats) and they put out thousands of seeds every year that I am constantly pulling. Pulled a bunch out today!
Well, maybe it's a tamer variety of hibiscus than the Rose of Sharon is..there are a lot of similar plants, some are native and some not, and some that are benign....my neighbor's is definitely the invasive type, which is unfortuate because it does have pretty pink flowers. These are actually all around the lake, on the water's edge and near the boardwalk. I'm not sure if they're aquatic or not but I think they may be. At least they're thriving right near the water! Next time I'm out on the boardwalk I'll take a closer look to see if they're actually rooted in the water. The flowers are pretty for a short time during late July and a week or two of August, but now are starting to fade away.
I'm not surprised that these are invasive plants -- just like weeds. This year in front of my building we had some of those same darned Horseweed thingies that were such a pain in front of the building next to mine last year -- at least this time (thanks to you! ) I knew what this was and so shot a few photos and sent them to the condo management people so they could notify the landscaping company to be sure and get them out of here. The nasty things were shooting up in front of both buildings this time. I won't be surprised if we see them again next summer, too, though....
Well great way to start 👍
Definitely these things are in the hibiscus family, no doubt about that! I think in some of my other photos that I've shot and shared at various times, especially in the past two or three years, it is more apparent. I daresay they are native plants and certainly have grown and flourished through the years as I don't recall them being all that noticeable back when I first moved into this community a long time ago. The flowers are either white or pink, and both are very pretty for a short time.Well, maybe it's a tamer variety of hibiscus than the Rose of Sharon is..there are a lot of similar plants, some are native and some not, and some that are benign....my neighbor's is definitely the invasive type, which is unfortuate because it does have pretty pink flowers.
We also welcome photos from your archives if you have some you would like to shareWow you folks have inspired me. I just cruised through all 18 pages of great photography. When I get some time to dust off my Nikon and lenses I'll contribute something.
