The magical golf-ball with all the letters arranged around a sphere would look even more baffling. Astonishing technology for the day.

Oh, I wish I still had an IBM Selectric!!! I'd have long since had the best time using a digital camera and macro lens for photographing the heck out of that "magical golf ball!" I remember how my mouth hung open in fascination the first time I ever saw one and then actually typed on an IBM Selecrric.....WOW!!! After that I watched in astonishment as my then-husband-to-be reached in and so easily, lifted a lever and the entire ball came out, as he casually and surprisingly quickly swapped out the balls in order to be able to take advantage of how the Selectric could convert into fonts more suited to typing correspondence in French.....

My first introduction to word processing was via a machine called the Flexowriter, and it took me a while to wrap my head around the different way this thing worked in comparison to an IBM Selectric or any other typewriter for that matter...

Little did we know the potential value of knowing touch-typing back when I was in high school and my mother was insisting that I take typing as one of my classes. "But I'm not planning to be a secretary!" I protested. She held firm. "It will be useful to you, even if you don't do anything more than type term papers for school. You are GOING to take Typing!" So I did. Years and years later, I think, "gee, my mother was right!" :) Wow.....

So here in 2018 heading into 2019 we quickly type out a text message (with or without emojis) and send it to a friend or relative anywhere instantaneously and don't think a thing about it. Yes, certainly in my lifetime the technological changes have been astonishing, astounding and for the most part, useful and delightful. What I am typing now will be seen by people around the world once I hit the "Post Reply" button on here. Amazing, isn't it?

Kids today have no idea of the fun they missed with those IBM Selectrics and the magical "golf balls"!!!
