In thinking about this some more, it occurs to me that probably for the cat's safety the best solution would be to keep it indoors rather than letting it wander free outdoors where there are hazards which might not be heard, but the cat might not be happy about that......
There is a group of cats that hang around our area. They are not really feral, they have been fixed and returned. Two sleep on my front porch and are at my door at 6 am looking for food. Constant battle with the raccoons at night if I don't take the food in soon enough. They are almost as tame as the cats. One cat that lives behind me and outside most of the time is nearly blind and may be partially deaf, everybody looks after him, but his handicaps don't seem to faze him. I have seen him up on top of the fence walking along, he crosses the street and visits the neighbors. His defense is to howl a little when another cat approaches.

We have some feral and/or recently abandoned cats that come by our backyard for food.

We have been able to get 2 of them taken in by a local humane society since they were socialized (behave well around people), which helps their chances of getting adopted. One of the recent ones to come around looks friendly, so I hoping the humane society will take him in as well.

Another one of them has been around for well over a year - she is slowly but surely getting socialized (she actually will sniff my fingers if I hold them out, as compared to running away as soon as the back door was opened), and we did get her spayed so she won't make any more kittens.

Our cat wouldn't. She stays out 24/7 when the weather permits. We stayed at that inn many times and I think I saw an old black cat once, in the early days.

I forgot earlier to post anything -- was busy with this-and-that, in-and-out of the house, etc., taking advantage of the nicer weather with which we've finally been blessed again.....

I'm hoping that this, something I shot the other day, is the last of this kind of photo I'll be shooting and posting this winter! I'm so, so ready to move on from snow and ice and whatnot and today felt like a lovely fresh hint of spring to come.....

Another picture in the ongoing adventures of Sherlock, Cat IT Manager!

"So, um, HR tells me someone is viewing content that is in violation of HR policies. So, um, yeah, I need to take a look at what is on your computer screen. Shouldn't take long."

[In reality there was a glass of water in front of the laptop he was trying to get to, but he couldn't figure out how to get to it since there was a monitor to the right of the laptop so he had no way to get to the glass.]
