I've usually heard you don't want head on lighting because of the obvious shadow you see behind the subject. However, for some reason I like this shot and the previous one with it. It rims the subject completely in the shadow and makes it stand out with an interesting effect. Looks like it was fun for people to do these pictures.

And that’s exactly what I was going for! I could have set up some intricate 2/3 point lighting with giant soft boxes etc. but where is the fun in that. This process is pretty much fail safe as nearly everything is in focus, with raw exposure can vary enough to not be an issue and it’s a fairly flattering light which of course girls love! ha

The shadow is the main characteristic of a ring flash as essentially the light as all around the lens.

Great photos, but also what an amazing idea! I do have a feeling if I attempted this idea, i'd end up with a smashed camera quite quickly but still, something I'd love to try myself one day!

Well that’s were a selective guest list and insurance comes in handy! I set it up on a fairly sturdy light stand and if I had been really cautious I could have run it all off a bowers batterypak to ensure that no one can trip over the cables.

Definitely give it a go though. No one else brought a camera (which seems to happen very often at events that I am at as I am ‘the camera guy’) so without this there is no way to remember the night as my mind is definitely a bit hazy!

It’s interesting that we take opposite directions in photo taking. I am quite into getting a nice clean image in camera and then messing around with it in post but you seem to prefer more of an in-camera look which if I think about it is what I do with video all the time!

Not here to critique but merely to say that I have really enjoyed seeing your progression over the last year and your constant stream of interesting and varied subjects. You must do a lot of walking/travelling as when I look through my Flickr it seems to be the same people in the same locations all the time!

Yet another from the Photo Booth. I wasn’t even aware this shot was going on so I give myself two thumbs up for simplicity in my setup that two camera novices can come up with what I think is a stellar shot. I think it goes back to the old saying that goes along the lines of when technology or a process becomes really simple that’s when we will see the most creative work!

here's my effort from boxing day

Arundel, West Sussex

Taken with Canon 7d, 15-85mm, ISO 100, 15mm, f/22, 11 exposures merged using Nik HDR 2.

Would love to hear comments.

If you don't mind, could you explain your set up? Remote switch, self timer, how was the flash set up? I loveee the look of these photos, any chance you snapped a shot of the set up from behind with your phone?

Cheers

No worries! Not meaning to insult your intelligence but I didn’t take any BTS shots as it really was so simple.

This is a diagram of what happened. the only light that was effecting the image was a ring flash attached to the camera. I then set a 2 second timer on the camera so when you push the shutter you had two seconds to get into position. I did intend to have a shutter release that they could just hold but it didn’t arrive from Amazon in time.

I have a Canon 6D with Wifi so I used my Dad’s old iPad (new one for his birthday from me so I could get away with it!) and this meant I could wirelessly send the shots to the iPad for review so everyone could check out their shots after without hogging the camera.

Any other questions feel free to ask. Got some more fun ones to post over the next few days.

In my opinion the elements that added to the pictures turning how I wanted was:

  • The simple setup
  • Animated expressions (good close company means little embaressment)
  • PP, I went for a strong contrasty image that is on the verge of blowing out the skin tones which always works nicely for girls.
  • Crumpled backdrop. I used an old off cut that was 'textured' from people standing on it which offered a little more grunginess to the images.
  • A little bit of alcohol. Although not advised for anything professional, amongst friends it definitely lowers everyones guard and also I think my friends trust me enough to leave out the shots that aren't quite so flattering!

Very nice. This is exactly the sort of artistic photo I like, but when I try anything like this I get it home and think it just looks like a rusty bucket. We are always our own worse critic I guess.

Thanks! I didn't really see much in it when it took it originally, but decided to have a little fiddle in Lightroom anyway & it ended up looking out a lot better than I expected. Still nothing spectacular though.

Took a break from sunsets and landscapes and shot the local Tour D'Orange on New Year's Day.

First off, this photo is GREAT! Goes to show that sometimes, the magic happens in the spur of a moment, without us photographers mucking about with staging, and posing and over analyzing everything (something I am guilty of).
Obviously, credit goes to you for the setup, which made it easy for non-photographers to have fun with this without running into any of the technical issues, but also credit to the spontaneous moment.
Also, I don't know if it's an illusion of the lighting and movement, but that's a LOT of hair :)

Secondly, I too have really enjoyed watching Alexander's progression over the past year and am envious of his travels. Much like you said, I look at my Flckr, and it's the same subject matter and the same locations, for the most part. I guess I need to try to travel more in 2014.

Cheers all!

Thanks for the wonderful explanation and diagram. I'm hoping to do something like this for our next family gathering so I can actually be in some of the photos.

goofing off with my gopro hero 3+ black edition today while digging out...
Does my Gopro focus seem soft like many are reporting... I can't tell if it's just a crappy picture of there is a focus problem. The bushes in front look to be in focus the tress on the back right seems soft...

Very new to Photography, and have so much to learn but I will enjoy it.

I took this shot last month on Holiday, I have not done any processing of this and it is as shot, any advice on filters, exposure etc, etc.

Please let rip, don't hold back, the quicker I learn the better!

My favorite shot from the ice storm we just had here in Southern Ontario, Canada.

Thank you! I live in a fairly small city, but I do spend a lot of time exploring it!

Very nice!

Beautiful photograph! I love the colors.

Thank you. :)

When doing night work I often shoot with a tungsten white balance so get some nice blues in the sky. In this case the full Moon was so bright and the foreground so lit up that it was just too much. I split the difference between tungsten and daylight somewhere in the middle. I used a tungsten balanced source to fill in the shadows on the tree in the foreground.

Photo of the day : January 2014

Last one from here for now, I'm going back soon at twilight for some colour captures.

Very nice. I like how you've captured the reflection in the windows nicely.

Another sunshine shot from me today to cheer me up as it's bucketing it down outside this morning......again.
