I came back to look at this a few times, which prompted me to want to give some feedback.

The horizon isn't level. At first I was thinking this was a result of cropping with lens distortion on the right, but I think it's just that the horizon isn't level.

While the ground and sky aren't evenly split, they also aren't following the rule of thirds. I personally think the foreground is more interesting than the top bit of the sky in this, so I would consider cropping out some of the upper portion of the pic. There is nothing on either side that is vital to the image, so I don't think this would adversely affect the elements within the composition. For *most* images of landscapes with a very clear horizon, you should decide whether the sky or what's below the horizon is more important to the image and then go with it. Having them both roughly equal usually doesn't work well.

Take this with a grain of salt. Enjoy your new body!

Thanks a lot for the feedback. It was a bit of a throw-away photo at the time. It was majorly over-exposed and I didn't really expect to get anything out of it. But I had a fiddle in the Lightroom anyway and (the colours, at least) turned out okay.

I've had a go at splitting the sky and land 1:2 respectively, as well as levelling the horizon. It's still nothing stellar and the 8MP resolution doesn't allow for much in the cropping department, but it's definitely an improvement. Feedback is welcome again, of course. I guess at the time of shooting it was a case of my brain thinking "I don't know which subject is more appealing, so I'll split it 50/50". That's the beginner in me - my brain still needs time to be re-wired in to photography :)

Lilacs

I've never posted on this before, but I'm just getting started in photography and this is a picture of the lilac tree from my backyard. Enjoy! :)

I’ve been planning to buy a small motorhome and do some travelling, but the plans kept being postponed. Well, I’m sorted now. If you see an old geezer in one of these, knock on the door; it might be me. I’m putting a solar panel on the roof, getting an extra ‘leisure’ battery, and turning the vehicle into a ‘wifi hub’. I want to be ‘off-grid’ for a few days at a time, yet still able to carry on with my writing and photography.

It’s very small, but, hell, when you’ve been living in a shack in the woods, you don’t need too many creature comforts. I’ll certainly be warmer! It’ll be interesting to find out what I really need on my travels (camera gear, laptop, iPad, clothes) and what I can do without (just about everything else). For the next few years, home really will be 'wherever I hang my hat'.

I’ve got two weeks to settle my affairs, and sort the paperwork, then I’m off. Whoopee!

I've been fortunate enough that my work in the past has enabled me to do a lot of global travelling, but my focus now is to explore the rich variety of landscapes, architecture and history that the UK offers. My ultimate goal is to get a small camper van and do exactly what you're doing. I wish you the very best on your exciting new venture and look forward to seeing your pictorial reports.

Took this one for the Weekly Photo Contest, but figured I'd post it to POTD, as well, since I haven't posted any hummingbirds lately...

Lovely sharp symmetry. A real winner.

Thanks AFB. I've enjoyed getting shots of these guys...they're actually quite friendly and lots of fun just to sit back and watch.

Love the reflection on the water :) If its not cropped already, have you tried a portrait orientation ?

Thanks Rowbear. I did apply a bit of crop but have lots left over. I'll give portrait a try and post it later. Funny, for some reason unkown to me, I shy away from portrait position.

Congrats Doylem! You'll be living the dream...well, my dream anyway. I've got about 3 years to go till early retirement at which point I hope to do the same.

It's a big beautiful world and I've been fortunate to enjoy a lot of travel but I find as I get older I'm getting less tolerant of air travel, airports and schlepping my gear and bags via planes and trains.

Good luck! Must be quite the adventure.

My mum has just bought a very similar size motorhome and has been spending the weekends kitting it out exactly how she wants inside with new wallpaper, cushion covers and a few little ornaments!

Enjoy your new van. I look forward to seeing some alternative locations from you! I bet they will still look stunning.

I can't wait to see what you capture on your travels, imagine that... waking up to sunrise perched on top of a mountain!

Good on you Doylem! I hope you have a great time :)

Congrats, doylem. I know you've been wanting to do this for some time now. It's great that you've finally been able to do this. It looks like the motorhome is not equipped with floatation devices to take you "across the pond," but I know I speak for many in that we will look forward to your pictures as you travel about. Safe travel, level roads and fair winds...

Doylem, if you ever come to Kent let me know and you can come in and have a shower or a bath :D

Just got hold of a Nikon D70 and here's the very first shot ...

Cheers :)

Awesome, I love it! You should have won the monthly contest mate.

Thanks, MacRy -- glad you liked it! You won the Two|One fair and square with a fantastic image. And you've selected a great (and timely) topic for the next one. I encourage everyone to consider submitting an entry, or to at least come check out the entries and vote when the time comes (June 19-26).

Cheers!

I'm sure there is also a beer cooler on that "really need on my travels" list! Make sure to have more fun than you know what to do with. Best of luck!
