Today's offering, shot from my deck with the 100-400mm and 1.4x teleconverter; finally got my Wimberley gimbal head set up on the tripod and it really does make such a difference in a lot of ways! I had forgotten how much I enjoy shooting with one.

Lovely :)
I'm guessing that the days of the 200-600mm are now numbered?

Cheers :)

No, actually the primary reason I bought the 100-400mm is to use as my walkaround lens, and the 200-600mm will be spending most of its time on the Wimberley. I had already tried the Bazooka on the Wimberley yesterday, but hadn't yet checked out the 100-400mm with 1.4x TC and also to see how it did on the gimbal. The 1.4x TC does add a little weight but on the 100-400 it still is not as heavy as the Bazooka. I"m keeping and will be using both lenses, and the 1.4x TC will spend most of its time on the 100-400mm, but at some point I also am going to stick it on the Bazooka and see what happens. Fun times!

I really should've bought the Wimberley a long time ago -- it makes shooting the geese and other subjects on the lake so much more physically comfortable than using the deck railing as the sole support for that heavy lens and having to hunch down in order to see through the EVF. Now I can stand properly and have the camera at proper eye level and of course moving the lens is a breeze: up, down, to either side..... I had forgotten how useful a gimbal head really is.

This little guy decided to hang around long enough for me to get my camera.

I was toying with this as an entry for this weeks Silivic or Denrology themed contest, but decided against it. I'm off for four days poking around old agricultural ruins during the day and then some timelapses and astrophotography from twilight where I don't have to pretend to be 'good company' and am hoping to capture something better on my journeys. This is the perfect time for early hour Milkyway captures that are pretty low in the sky Downunder until about the 26th of this month.

I was tickled silly when yesterday afternoon, armed with my new lens, I again walked along the boardwalk and lo and behold, there he was again -- the big bird who had captivated me on Sunday! THIS time I had the right lens....and first thing I realized when looking through the EVF was that, hey, I was wrong, he wasn't a Great Egret at all, he is a Great Blue Heron, which really makes much more sense to me. We just don't get Egrets here.

400mm still isn't quite long enough -- but it certainly is an improvement over the 90mm I was using the first time I saw this guy! Still had to do some cropping, though, to bring him a bit closer for viewing.

I watched him for a while, clicking away as he stood in the water, occasionally moving purposefully. At one point he turned and began walking a little faster, albeit still stealthily and smoothly.....so I realized he had spotted his lunch swimming nearby. Unfortunately I missed the "decisive moment" and the actual action, but did capture him with his mouth full of the freshly-caught fish he was about to enjoy for lunch....

He then flew over to a secluded section where he could dine in peace and privacy.

But you are good company! I love having you around.
And very eloquent too. (reminds me: A man was at his friend's funeral and asked the wife if he could say a word. She agreed. The man stood at the podium and said, "Plethora." As he sat back down the wife said, "Thanks, that means a lot." )

@oblomow My dear friend, I was just continuing the light-heartedness at play, no offence was taken at your humour with the 'good company' mention. I had a good giggle at the mention of myself pretending to be 'good company' You would have known that from my impish grin if we were together! ;) I do consider myself quite the accomplished curmudgeon though!

I wasn't sure. You seem to avoid me. Australia of all places! :)

U.K.
Nice capture!
That’s an awesome shot!

Thanks, i'd love to say it was down to skill and patience but alas, it was pure luck, right place right time.
Having so much time on my hands has led to me enjoying photographing little things much more, they have such incredible detail, its like seeing into a parallel universe. The insect world is certainly a very dangerous place to live with some seriously scary and fierce looking creatures.

Reminds me off the Ant Man. he sees it all.
