For me, this is not about making a living, this is about assisting and enabling people to start living again. That's great news. You're really getting the most out of photography for the groups you are working with.
As for not being qualified I'd not worry about it. I've met many qualified mental health workers who haven't got a clue. What you are doing is making a difference.
Keep up the good work.
I hope you took him a carrot as a reward.
Have a suicide prevention workshop intensive coming up soon and have recently been elected as the vice-chair on a mental health advocacy group which influences policies and procedures of dealing with those living with mental health challenges in their lives at a state and local level. We have a lad here that has mentioned having no hope for the future many times and refuses to go to a counsellor of any sort, so this will not only come in handy with my advocacy work but also personally. And yes, there were carrots!
The last two days have been amazing days for me, on Wednesday I did my advocacy training and found out I pleased the adjudication panel and have been accepted to exhibit in this years Shimmer Photographic Biennale Festival, with 10 long-exposure images, a workshop on Mindful Photography and an Artists Talk, sharing how photography literally saved my life. Plus I have to arrange an opening celebration, which I've never done for my past exhibitions. Busy times ahead! And yesterday I received my 17-40mm lens! I'm really looking forward to exploring some ultra-wide long-exposure scenes with it, but had a play with it last night, at the light displays. If it had image-stabilisation, it would be the perfect lens! Had to work pretty hard to get crisp hand-held images in the low light with shutter speeds around 1/15-1/6. And on top of that, I got to help a whole bunch of lovely people explore nighttime photography for the first time! More horses this morning, then cleaning at the mother-in-laws this afternoon, then grant applications to help with the exhibition, then choosing which images to edit for the participants from the last couple of nights and today.
One from last nights trip into town, exploring The Parade of Light. This is one of the participants and I, accompanied by some interlopers, exploring The Infinity Box, which is a 20 foot long shipping container lined with reflective surfaces and cool LED lighting, that you walk through. Couldn't help but get a selfie!
