I took part in the New York Times "Moment in Time" mosaic May 2, 2010 at 15:00 U.T.C. or 8am Pacific here in Vancouver by heading out to Granville Island Market to see what I could find.

C&C welcome

Since you're asking for C&C I'll say this: Great capture, depth of field maybe a tad too narrow, but focus is in the right area. I'd crop it on the right and bottom to move the dragonfly out of the center though. That would make the photo much more pleasant to look at.

Thanks :)

DoF is something I really don't have the hang of yet. I took this using my 70-300mm lens as it was all I had on me at the time. I had to stand over a metre away!

Either way, thanks a lot and I will try to get the hang of cropping and DoF :)

EDIT: Perhaps something more like this?

This is going in the right direction, but it's a bit severe. Try to give the elements in the frame more breathing room. If you double the space you allowed on the bottom and right in your crop it will be better. The general thought is to maintain balance in the frame. Don't let any part of the photo overpower it, especially if it's not the subject. The background does this in your crop.

The dragonfly is quite beautiful. I used to catch them as a boy in Ohio. One was pink.
