First chance to try out my new lens at the weekend. I was hurrying back knowing that the sun was going and where I wanted to original take a shot was pretty much pitch black.

Fortunately the sun shone through and gave this very intense red light as it was setting. Quite a surreal moment but just enough time to capture the shot!

As always, comments appreciated!

That's quite a red gel you have on that light. :)

One more shot of the fun couple, this time without the cap.

For today, another from Pompeii. This one from the inside of a house. The light streaming in from a window above the upper right corner of the photo added some contrast that several of my other interior shots in Pompeii lacked.

Lovely shot. Very moody and atmospheric.

This is an area in between some office buildings, that I refer to as 'the smoking room.' In spring and summer, there is a beautiful canopy of green over this space. I was mucking around with long exposures in daylight here, this is a 15 second exposure, getting a sense of movement to the trees early greenery emerging. This was taken on a day with no cloud cover at all, that was what I was really wanting to capture, views looking up buildings with movement of clouds. There's always next time!

Thanks Peter,

I moved from North America to Australia. So the black swan is an interesting creature to my eyes as well. Although I've been here long enough now that white ones are also strange. Basically all swans look weird to me, I've been ruined!

Nice shot Evil Spoonman. This is a Black Swan. I've heard of them but have never seen one. Black Swan - Wikipedia

Their colouring looks quite remarkable when you're accustomed to the common white varieties.

Photo of the day : October 2013

I like the expression on this lady's face. She was totally absorbed in her shopping.

What's the new lens? Inquiring minds want to know!

It's a Sigma 35mm f1.4, enjoying it so far but haven't had a huge amount of opportunity to use it!

Really nice composition and color. Do you think can get the face less hot? I know the red is intentional, but she seems hot. No pun intended.

Thanks, Are you referring to the intensity of the red or the exposure?

It was a pain to get a ladder big enough and you should have seen the size of the gel!

Nice framing and exposure on this one. Only thing that I would say is that His expression seems to tell a different story to Hers and in that sense the photo is a bit out of sync for me. I feel like there is quite a strong vignette as well and I'm not sure if it's natural or created in post?

I'd also be interested in knowing what the aspect ratio is and the reasoning behind it? I am aware that in the US 8x10 (I think) is quite popular whereas here in the UK and Europe we seem to stick to our 4x6 and of course with the rise of Instagram and resurgence of MF film 1x1 is now quite common.

This is great. Black and white is a really good choice for this one.

Here is another shot I took a few minutes after the last one I posted. The light had really changed and it had got much darker.

This edit isn't as contrasty and vibrant as the first but they weren't meant to be a set of photos so I don't mind about the inconsistency.

I believe I cropped it to 8x10. I cropped out some extra junk on the right (another rock that felt distracting to me).

The lady seemed more openly expressive than he did, at least on the face. He was very open and friendly, but she seemed to be "wear it" more than him.

I do have a bit of a strong vignette on it. I applied a cooling radial adjustment to the outer edges in Lightroom. I guess I kind of prefer them sometimes.

It's a great way to show the same subject and location when the light changes just a few minutes later.

Intensity. Exposure seems fine.

Today is a gloomy day in Toronto. It threatens to rain, but cannot quite commit to that either. On days like this I look out of the window (my office desk conveniently faces a huge window), and wish I was somewhere far far away. Usually Italy. I've been obsessed with it long before I got an opportunity to visit it, and when I did, it did not disappoint.

The photo below was taken from the tip of the Sirmio peninsula on Lake Garda. That lake has some of the most breathtaking landscapes I have ever seen. When I arrived in Sirmione, the little town on the peninsula, I couldn't stop thinking that people there must be nuts - they just walk around like everything is normal, and not stare at the magnificent scenery.

Now that I've been doing this for about a year, I revisited some of my earlier pics (taken last December I believe) and re-processed (better LR skills a year in).

So for today, an oldie, re-processed (plus I'm fresh out of new material).

The new medical research facility in town, SAMHRI, with the upgrading to electric for our train system below. The exterior of this building is nearly complete and I'm pretty sure every man and his dog with a camera are going to be there for their shot!

Like Puckman I have a lack on new material (time, weather and dark evenings) so thought I would give some old photos a makeover with my (hopefully) improving LR skills.

Quite a big crop on this one to try and change the feel a bit (I had some tips from a photographer I know called Graham Hodgkiss). Comments welcome.

I'm missing the sun at the moment. Dark mornings, dark evenings.:(

I really like the boat and peer shot on your Fliclr BTW. Very nicely done.

So how did you get this shot without people. The clock seems to show 8:55 or so. The place should have been packed ...

Must have been one heck of an ND filter or did you have special access?

It was actually taken at 10:44 PM. The park closed at 9 that day, so all guests had already left.
