Storm rolling into Canyonlands at dusk. Shot on iPhone 6 Plus of course
I just spent more than three months teaching photography workshops in the Alps, so I haven't been posting much lately. I'm now back in the US and beginning to process some photos.
This one is from a trip I did with fellow photographer Ted Gore, who flew out to join me for some scouting and planning in advance of a workshop that we'll be leading together next summer. We had a high incentive to get as much done as possible while we were in the Dolomites, so it was pretty frustrating when we both came down with a nasty cold that confined us to our bunks in a refuge hut for days. On this evening, we finally decided to try to drag ourselves out of bed for a hike so that we could reach this peak at sunset. It took everything we had to get our sick selves up there, but this view was the reward. It was pretty awesome and well worth the effort.
By the way, Doylem, I will be in your neck of the woods next year! I've been invited to speak at a photography conference near the Lakes District, so don't be surprised if I come knocking.

Welcome back. Another great image as usual. I think a few of us Brits might want to get along to that conference!I just spent more than three months teaching photography workshops in the Alps, so I haven't been posting much lately. I'm now back in the US and beginning to process some photos.

I like. I think you nailed the exposure/PP for this one. Often this type of shot is quite tricky to not under/over expose part of the image. There are people in this one if you look hard enough....Comments always appreciated.

The English Lake District was really only ‘discovered’ in the late 18th century, when war in Europe prevented wealthy young men and women from England taking the ‘grand tour’ of the Alps, Dolomites, etc. The Scottish Highlands and Lake District were stand-ins for the more dramatic landscapes in Europe, and when painters depicted the Lake District, they extended the mountain upwards, to give them a more Alpine grandeur! Your beautiful photograph reminds me a lot of some paintings I’ve seen, but, despite a quick Google, I can’t find what I’m looking for online.
What event will you be speaking at? You’re very welcome to come knocking… but I won’t be in (and my shack’s been demolished)! I’m travelling around, full-time - in a tiny motorhome, writing and taking stock pix - so let me know when you’re visiting Lakeland, and we can meet up. I haven't climbed many high hills lately, but I know where the good pubs are…

I wouldn't mind a pint or two. And meeting some of you in person. NL->UK isn' that far. Thanks, and I hope you do! It would be great to get to meet some of you.
Are you maybe thinking of "Wanderer above the sea of fog" by Caspar David Friedrich?

I've had a couple of people compare my latest photo to that painting.
And I love the history of that era that you describe, the romanticizing and exaggeration during a period of restricted movement for artists.
At any rate, the conference is a two-day event dedicated to landscape photography organized by OnLandscape Magazine. They haven't announced the 2016 conference yet, but they have dates and a venue. It will be in November of 2016 at the Rheged Centre in Cumbria. The last time they had an impressive cast of nine speakers and sponsors such as Canon, PhaseOne, Linhof, etc. So it promises to be a great event. And I will very much look forward to your pub tour, Doylem,...even if it's just one pub.
Thanks fanboy - all thanks to the wonders of highlight/shadow recovery!I like. I think you nailed the exposure/PP for this one. Often this type of shot is quite tricky to not under/over expose pa
I was a bit disappointed to find out that Southport Pier was closed after dark. I had to shoot this through the locked gate.
